Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that just about everyone has had at least once: frightening. When my friends learned that I was in her class, they looked at me with pity.
Miss Baugh didn’t allow nonsense. She taught us to take school seriously. She had been teaching for a long time and knew how to frighten even the boys who typically behaved badly in the back row. They behaved well in her classroom. I was as frightened as anyone.
But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap props (道具) for pranks (恶作剧) that I could play on friends and family. One such prop had two parts: an ink (墨水) bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a puddle (水坑). It didn’t take long to run out of people to fool (愚弄) at home, so I took my props to school.
Of all the people I could have pranked, strangely I chose Miss Baugh. At the beginning of the class period, before she’d returned to her classroom, I was brave enough to approach her desk.
I opened her grade book and placed the bottle and the metal on one of the pages, proudly noting that it truly did look like spilled ink!
Then I went to my desk and waited for the fun. I wasn’t disappointed. When Miss Baugh saw the bottle and the metal, she let out a little cry and looked for something to remove the ink with.
The prank had succeeded way beyond my expectations. But then the realization began to set in that I had pranked Miss Baugh. I began worrying when Miss Baugh tried to remove the ink with a paper towel and discovered that it was just a piece of black metal. She picked up the “puddle”, then the bottle, and examined them.
She looked up. Her eyes searched the classroom. My classmates avoided looking at me so as not to give me away.
Then came the question: “Who did this?”

There was a girl called Cary, who was a new student in Esmarth Vil, a primary school in a small town.
She was the most hardworking girl at her school. Her marks were higher than the others. She was the best, but nobody wanted to be her friend. Her classmates didn’t want to play with her and some even laughed at her. Cary’s teacher Jared didn’t know that.
One day, Jared set an exam and Robert, a boy who was the king of all the students, signed his exam paper using Cary’s name, and changed Cary’s name for Robert’s quickly after Cary handed in her paper. It wasn’t noticed by anybody. When Jared returned all the exam Papers, everybody was shocked. Cary failed the exam, but the others seemed to be happy with that.
The next day, when Cary arrived at school, all the children wanted to be with her and invited her to play with them. Although Cary was surprised, she was happy to play with the other children. During their fun time, Jared suddenly appeared to inform Cary that there had been a mistake, and she hadn’t failed.
Jared explained to the students what had happened and punished Robert. After that, they all stopped playing with Cary again.
Cary couldn’t stop crying this time and ran to ask her teacher why she couldn’t make friends with good school performance.

It was September 1966, and I was twenty years old, facing my first class of kids as a new teacher. My class in downtown Toronto was made up of thirty-eight angels, and one street kid named Mike. His parents passed away when he was a baby, and he lived with a weak and indifferent grandmother. As for a ten-year-old boy, he was little and rough.
Like most new, young teachers, I was full of enthusiasm and determined to make a difference. Being so young, I knew very little about parenting. However, I did recognize a child in need, and decided to see if I could make a difference. And so my special “foster father (养父)” relationship with Mike began.
Each day as I arrived at school, I’d take Mike out for breakfast. Each noon hour as I shared my lunch with him, I taught him some new skills — for a while we worked on the proper method of using a microscope. On another day we constructed a camera, then we classified rocks. Mike would then “help” me teach these skills to the rest of the class. We had a lot of fun, and a kind of unspoken trust began to build up between us.
Early in our special relationship, Mike told me of his dream — becoming a lawyer. I believed then, and after thirty-four years of teaching I still believe, that all children have a gift. Everyone has the same opportunity to be the best person they can be. I realized this boy was brilliant, and that with a little love, attention, understanding, guidance and encouragement, he could probably accomplish whatever he put his mind to. I figured if he wanted to be a lawyer, I would do all I could to help him become the very best lawyer he could be.
Every Saturday morning, I took Mike to the Osgoode Law Library, which was attached to the University of Toronto. I explained to him that reading up on law was the only way to be a good lawyer. His young mind was eager and interested.
