There was a girl called Cary, who was a new student in Esmarth Vil, a primary school in a small town.
She was the most hardworking girl at her school. Her marks were higher than the others. She was the best, but nobody wanted to be her friend. Her classmates didn’t want to play with her and some even laughed at her. Cary’s teacher Jared didn’t know that.
One day, Jared set an exam and Robert, a boy who was the king of all the students, signed his exam paper using Cary’s name, and changed Cary’s name for Robert’s quickly after Cary handed in her paper. It wasn’t noticed by anybody. When Jared returned all the exam Papers, everybody was shocked. Cary failed the exam, but the others seemed to be happy with that.
The next day, when Cary arrived at school, all the children wanted to be with her and invited her to play with them. Although Cary was surprised, she was happy to play with the other children. During their fun time, Jared suddenly appeared to inform Cary that there had been a mistake, and she hadn’t failed.
Jared explained to the students what had happened and punished Robert. After that, they all stopped playing with Cary again.
Cary couldn’t stop crying this time and ran to ask her teacher why she couldn’t make friends with good school performance.

“Class, please line up!”said Ms Baroni, Jenna’s tae kwon do (跆拳道) teacher who was about to introduce everyone to Marti, Jenna’s best friend. Jenna was excited that Marti would be taking lessons too.
After warm-up exercises, Ms Baroni divided everyone into color-belt groups. Even though Jenna was a yellow belt and a level above Marti, Ms Baroni told the friends to work together. Jenna demonstrated a front kick and Marti copied it. Her kick was as high as Jenna’s shoulder. “Great job, Marti!“ said Ms Baroni, who had walked up behind them. “Let me show you something” she said. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti.“What a wonderful side kick!“ Ms Baroni praised with an encouraging nod.
The more Marti did, the more praises she earned from Ms Baroni. At the same time, Jenna felt a little bit concerned. What if Marti became better than her? What if Marti became Ms Baroni’s favorite student? At the end of class, Jenna grabbed her bag and hurried outside to find her mom. She bad planned to wait and say good-by to Marti, but now she wanted to be alone.
For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress Ms Baroni with her skills. And as Marti tumed into a star student, Jenna became less and less excited about tae kwon do.
“Ms. Baroni thinks I’m ready to test for a new belt, Marti said as they walked down the hallway at school one day. Jenna stopped in her tracks.“It’s harder than you think. Master Lee,not Ms Baroni, will give you point.” said Jenna.“You don’t think I’m good enough to test yet?"Marti looked disappointed. Jenna felt her face get hot. She didn’t like feeling jealous (嫉妒), but she couldn’t help it. She wasn’t ready to test for her next belt because she hadn’t been practicing every day.

Like every boy there ever was, what Kyle Hrenwood most wanted in this world was a dog. Unfortunately for Kyle, his mom didn’t think he was responsible enough.
The day before Kyle’s thirteenth birthday, he went to the park and found a woman sobbing. He was immediately worried. Was the woman hurt?
He bent over and said “Miss, Are you OK? Do you want me to call anyone?” The woman shook her head and said, “My husband died two weeks ago, and I feel alone. We’d been together for thirty years. I can’t stand the silence inside that house. I’m Deidre. What’s your name?”
Kyle introduced himself and they talked for a long time. Kyle’s encounter with Deidre left him very sad, and he decided to go home. “Mom,” he said. “I don’t want to get married.” “Why not?” asked Kyle’s mom. “What if you spend thirty or forty years with someone,” Kyle said. “And then he is dead, and you’re alone?” Mom said, “Then you’ll miss out on love. You see, if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. You may discover those thirty years alone are not worth living.”
The next day, he had one of the biggest surprises and greatest joys of his life—a puppy! That was when he remembered Deidre was alone in her huge house.
A few hours later, Kyle knocked on Deidre’s door holding the puppy. He said, “Today is my birthday, and my parents gave me this puppy. You need this puppy more than I do.” “Give my heart to an animal just so it can die in a few years’ time?” Deidre asked bitterly. “I don’t think so. I don’t need any more pain in my life!”
“My mom said that if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. too,” Kyle said.
“You’re right, Kyle!” Deidre said. “I do need this puppy. Maybe you can visit us both; I’ve never had a dog before and may need some advice!”
Over the next few years, Kyle and Deidre, and Max (that was the dog’s name) became great friends. Then Kyle’s dad was offered a job in another state, and the family moved away.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran. Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Everyday after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

It was Saturday — Toby’s birthday party. But none of his classmates was here. He sat alone in a wheelchair in his living room, trying not to cry.
“It’ll be alright, kid. Do you want me to perform some of Spider-Man’s tricks?” Ron asked. Toby’s mother Marissa hired him, who worked as a performer imitating (模仿) Spider- Man. Toby shook his head. “Are you sure? I bet you’ll like it,” Ron continued.
Marissa shook her head. “That won’t cheer him up, Ron,” she stated. “Toby has been looking forward to his classmates being here. It’s all he wanted. It started a year ago, and it hasn’t been easy. Being in a wheel chair in a school of able-bodied kids has been tough, but I wanted him to feel normal. However, children can be cruel (残忍的).”
“I get it,” Ron replied. “Asked by the teacher, we handed out the invitations in class. All the kids looked excited, especially when I told them Spider-Man was coming,” Marissa added. “I can’t believe none of them came.”
This was caused by a boy called Bob. This boy bullied (欺侮) Toby sometimes. He had secretly told the other kids to hide the invitations and not to give them to their parents. Marissa and Toby didn’t know all this.
Having no choice, Marissa said this party was over. Ron reached home. He took out his phone, looking at the photos he had taken that afternoon. He remembered how excited Toby had been in the beginning while they waited for his classmates. He also remembered how sad Toby had been at last. Ron felt sad and decided to help Toby.
Suddenly, he had an idea. He made a post on his Facebook page. He explained what had happened to Toby. And he wished people to send Toby presents to cheer him up.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________When I was 10, I was always made fun of by my fellow Co-Curricular Activities(CCA) mates, including John. Words like, “Dick is the best player in the CCA! He only knows how to play ’Mary had a Little Lamb’ on the trumpet!” John’s fellows sang along, laughing at me.
“Don’t worry, Dick! I know you will be the best musician around and maybe perform 10 times in a year!” Tom encouraged me. “Thanks for the encouragement even though John is a better player since he has started playing the trumpet since primary school. Meanwhile, I just started, I replied with determination in my eyes to beat John.” Tom, seeing this, decided to give me more support.
After a long day of practice, the band was dismissed. I would have asked Tom to follow me back home but I was in a rush, so I left him. The moment I left the school, I took out my earpiece, listening to recordings like a broken recorder. I got so lost at the point that I did not sec the wall in front and fell on the ground with a loud hit. Luckily for me, a passer-by saw what had happened and immediately called the ambulance while stopping the blood.
“Ugh, where am I?” When I came to myself, I saw my parents and classmates. The passer-by must have informed my school or called using my phone! He then came up and explained to me what had happened. This made me embarrassed.
I could not even show my face to my parents! I wished the ground would swallow me whole, but that did not stop me from trying to be the best player. The nurse told me that I couldn’t practise as my body needed time to heal and that would take up a lot of energy. “I want to be the best. One leg injury would not stop me; it would only make me feel more motivated, I replied to the nurse.” When the nurse heard my words, she brought in the trumpet that I had wanted to practice with.

I had just gotten out of middle school and was about to enter senior high school. I was so excited to become a big girl, but I also knew I would miss my old school on the first day. I wasn’t going to be walking into the same school, with the same friends and same teachers.
I thought I was ready for the change, though. I had a friend who would be at my new school--my neighbor Jenny. I would be fine.
I soon realized Jenny got popular fast at the new school. But Jenny changed very quickly. She dressed differently, she acted differently, and she talked differently. Undoubtedly, she preferred to spend too much time socializing (交往) rather than study. A part of me didn’t want to be popular by changing myself, but the other half couldn’t help it. So, I sat with Jenny and her friends in the new clique (小圈子). I noticed that when you sat in “the group”, everyone was so nice. They concentrated their topics on eating, dressing, hanging out, and watching videos or movies. I made so many friends that I felt accepted, but I wasn’t myself around them. Gradually, I found myself no longer a hard-working student, showing less interest in exploring the world of knowledge.
Jenny had taught me the “rules” of being popular: where I should shop, what I should say, and what I should stop doing. I changed myself. I tried hard to be the opposite of who I really was, just to be as popular as my “group”. Before long, I just couldn’t take it anymore, because I felt unhappy and anxious about my studies. I wondered how I could get over my loneliness if I separated from the group. So I talked to my mom about it.

Ant Bites
“Ow! Ow!” I shouted as I broke my jump rope rhythm: “Something, in my shoe is biting me.” I cried.
The first graders waiting to jump and the two rope turners circled around me on the dirt playground. My teacher, Miss Bell, heard me and hurried over.
“It’s still stinging me.” I cried as the circle of children opened for Miss Bell.
“Which foot is it?” she asked.
I stuck up my right foot as she bent down to inspect it. Just then, feeling a new sting, I yelped in pain.
“Here. Let’s take off your shoe.” instructed Miss Bell, squatting(蹲) down to get the shoe.
Then, I remembered the holes in my socks. Welfare socks didn’t last long. Holes in socks were a common thing for our family in the years following the Great Depression. Shoes got fresh paper inserted every Saturday to cover the holes in their soles. But socks with holes were just accepted. Socks with holes in the heels got pulled down so the hole wouldn’t show. Where there was a hole, there would soon be a blister. Every week as she washed our clothes, Mama would say, “Even if we’re poor and our clothes are worn out. We can still be clean.”
I began to cry from the pain in my foot, but I refused to let Miss Bell take off my shoe. I could not bear for her and the others to see the hole in my faded red sock.
“Come on, then. Let’s go inside to the office.”
A trail of first graders followed after us until Miss Bell told them to stay on the playground. I did my best to control my tears. Yet, each time the thing in my shoe stung me, I would let out a loud, “Oh, oh, oh!” Tears raced down my contorted(扭曲的) face.
Miss Womble, the fifth--grade teacher, came into the office. “Can I help? I know her. She lives next door to me.”
Miss Womble was a great neighbor. She had even played games with us on occasion. She put both hands on my shaking shoulders and looked into my distressed, red eyes.

Javon was the shortest kid in the class. Since the third grade, he had been smaller than every boy and all of the girls. He’d had to ask Ms. Haygood to get his gym locker changed so that he didn’t have to stretch so much to reach it. For most kids, being short would be a problem, but Javon just never let it bother him. Whether he would grow or not, there was nothing he could do. Javon held a similar attitude to most things.
The one exception was school work. Right before the first day of middle school, his dad had a serious talk with him about college. More precisely, his dad told him that college was expensive. College cost more money than a year’s rent on their apartment and the yearly income of either his dad or his mom. Given that, Javon didn’t understand why anyone would want to go to college. His dad explained some people who worked really hard and got good grades paid less or nothing at all for college. It was called a scholarship. Javon nodded, promising his dad that he would work hard and get a scholarship.
And Javon had worked hard. By middle of seventh grade, Javon was one of the top kids in the class. He was still the shortest, but now he also got called one of the smartest. So, he hadn’t been too concerned when Mr. T announced they were starting a new unit in math. The class started normally enough. But then Mr. T threw a letter into his math problem. He smiled at the class like using letters in math was perfectly normal.
For Javon, math used to be easy. But he could not wrap his mind around using these letters. He couldn’t remember the rules Mr. T had given and he didn’t even understood the ones he did remember. Whenever Mr. T tried to explain, Javon seemed to focus so hard on wanting to understand that he didn’t actually hear what Mr. T said. Before he knew it, he was hopelessly lost in math class. Soon the chapter test came.

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had a dislike to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed, although I still hated the subject itself. From then on, I had spent countless hours studying, but with so many difficulties to cover, I was overwhelmed. The pressure of the subject was weighing heavily on my shoulders. I had always been a hardworking and dedicated student, but the stress seemed unbearable. No matter how much effort I put into math, I couldn’t seem to keep up. As the mid-term exams approached, I felt a sense of dread. The fear of failure consumed me, and I began to doubt myself again.
One day after school, I found myself walking alongside Mr. A on the empty playground. He could tell that something was bothering me, and he asked if everything was alright. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether to share my struggles.
