A mother goat can pick out her own baby from its voice alone by the time the kid is just five days old.
Researchers from University of London played kids’ voices to female goats and studied their responses. They were surprised to find that the animals were able to pick out their own kids’ voices.
“During the first week of their lives, the mother and the kid depend a lot on smell to recognize one another and the animals hide in grass and don’t call much in the wild. It’s a strategy they use to avoid enemies,” Dr. Elodie Briefer explained to BBC News, who led the research. “The mother calls to the kids when she wants them to come and be fed, so we expected that kids would recognize the mother’s voice.” In fact, this was the case for deer, which also use this hiding strategy, although they do not belong to the same family of species as goats.
She and her team recorded and played the young kids’ calls to the female goats and recorded their responses. She explained, “Even when the calls came from kids that are five to six days old, we could see the mothers responding more to the voices of their own babies.” Hearing the voices of their own kids, the females would look towards the speaker that the sound was coming from, moving around and calling in response.
The scientists say that understanding how goats behave is of great importance. “This helps us understand just how smart these animals are,” said Dr. Briefer. “Farmers might be able to change their way to raise goats considering this natural behavior.”

For decades, researchers have observed orcas (虎鲸) attacking and even killing porpoises (鼠海豚) in the Pacific Northwest. But it confuses people that these expert hunters don’t eat them. So what’s going on here?
Southern Resident orcas are a different population of orcas that live in the Pacific Northwest. The lives of these orcas are closely tied to those of the salmon. So if the salmon disappear, so too will the orca. But despite their preference for the salmon, these whales are known to attack and kill other smaller marine mammals (海洋哺乳 动物) without eating them.
To better understand this unusual behavior, an international team of researchers did a research and examined more than 60 years of recorded interactions between Southern Resident orcas and porpoises in the Salish Sea.
“Why don’t the Southern Residents just eat porpoises instead?” Deborah Giles of Wild Orca said. “It’s because fish-eating killer whales have a completely different ecology and culture from orcas that eat marine mammals. So we must conclude that their interactions with porpoises serve a different purpose, but this purpose has only been a guess until now. ”
According to Giles and her colleagues’ work, the orca may be attacking the porpoise as a form of social play. It is possible these large animals may be attacking the smaller mammals as a way to build up social cohesion (凝聚力). Similarly, the behavior could represent hunting practice, by which the orcas are practising their teamwork and cooperation skills for hunting salmons. Finally, the behavior could be a way of “mismothering” where the orca see the smaller porpoises as weaker or ill and so in need of care.
This work highlights the need for the protection of salmon populations in the area as well as the orcas’ entire hunting range. The threat to the salmon’s future is not just a threat to a single species, but an entire ecosystem.
1. Why did an international team of researchers do their study?A.To find out a way to protect porpoises. |

In parts of the Pacific Northwest, the owls are now believed to be causing a drop in the population of a smaller, less aggressive bird: the northern spotted owl. In many ways, the barred owl is the spotted owl’s worst enemy. The barred owl has more babies per year and eats the same animals, like squirrels and wood rats. And their numbers are now larger in many parts of the spotted owl’s traditional territory (领地).
David Wiens is a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He and other officials are doing something unusual to protect spotted owls: killing barred owls. It is an experimental program. More than 2,400 barred owls have already been shot.
Wiens is the son of a well-known bird expert and grew up with the fascination for birds. He has mixed feelings about the program. “It’s a little distasteful, I think, to go out killing barred owls to save another owl species,” he says. But he adds, “We knew that barred owls were out competing spotted owls and their numbers were growing too fast.”
To catch barred owls, officials put digital (电子的) bird callers on the ground. Then they step back and wait as several sounds from the devices fill the air. All of this happens in the dark of night. Barred owls dislike other birds in their territory, so they will fly down and chase other owls out. That is when Wiens and his team try to shoot them.

It also suggested giving weight-loss drugs and surgery to children. Yet the recommended lifestyle programs are expensive and hard to maintain.
Rather than that, we need to invest in more and safer places for children to play. Studies show clearly that moving more helps both physical and mental health. In 2020 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found, unsurprisingly, that kids’ sports participation increases with their parents’ incomes.
Children between 6 and 17 should get at least an hour of physical activity every day. Yet only 21% to 28% of U.S. kids meet this target, surveys found. Why is it so hard to get kids moving? In addition to fewer opportunities at school, researchers list increased screen time, changing norms around letting kids play outdoors, and a lack of safe places for them to play outside. Lower-income neighborhoods tend to have the fewest public play spaces. And although rural areas have more undeveloped outdoor space, they often lack playgrounds, tracks and exercise facilities.
Kids everywhere need more places to play: trails, skate parks and climbing walls, gardens and ball fields, bike paths and basketball courts. Public funding to build and keep up these areas is crucial, but other options such as shared-use agreements can make unused spaces available to the public. Only 10 percent of U.S. schools let people into their playgrounds when school is out, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) found, and opening up these spaces would give 5.2 million more children access. “Play streets”— residential streets or parking lots that are temporarily closed for activities — are another affordable way to give kids more chances to run around.
These opportunities aren’t about changing children’s waistlines — they’re how we keep childhood healthy and fun.
1. What does AAP suggest about dealing with obese children?A.Training them on the basis of the family. |

The world is obsessed with fad diets and weight loss, yet few of us know how a kilogram of fat actually vanishes off the scales. The most common misconception by far, was that fat is converted to energy. Some thought fat turns into muscle, which is impossible.
The enlightening facts about fat metabolism
The correct answer is that fat is converted to carbon dioxide and water. If you lose 10 pounds of fat, precisely 8.4 pounds comes out through your lungs and the remaining 1.6 pounds turns into water.
We all learn that “energy in equals energy out” in high school. But energy is a notoriously confusing concept, even among scientists who study obesity.
According to the latest government figures, Americans consume 3.55 kg of food and beverages every day. If you put 3.55 kg of food and water into your body, plus 660 grams of oxygen, then 4.2 kg of stuff needs to come back out, or you’ll gain weight. If you’re hoping to shed some weight, more than 4.1kg will have to go.
Eat less, exhale more
A.Calories in equals energy out. |
B.Kilograms in versus kilograms out. |
C.The reason we gain or lose weight is much less mysterious if we keep track of all the kilograms, too, not just those calories. |
D.So if fat turns into carbon dioxide, could simply breathing more make you lose weight? |
E.So if not energy, muscles, where does fat go? |
F.In other words, nearly all the weight we lose is exhaled. |
G.Everything else you swallow is absorbed. |

A group of researchers report in the journal Science that when the Moon was created, some 4. 5 billion years ago, there was not much hydrogen (氢气) on it, and therefore no water.
The researchers surveyed and evaluated this by analyzing chlorine (氯) isotopes found in lunar rock samples from Apollo missions. The range of chlorine isotopes in lunar samples was 25 times that found in samples from Earth.
“If the Moon had significant levels of hydrogen, as Earth did, this range would have been far less,” said Zachary D. Sharp, a scientist in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the study’s lead author.
“The chlorine would have stuck together with hydrogen, forming compounds like hydrogen chloride, and escaped from the Moon’s surface,” he said. The abundance of chlorine indicates a lack of hydrogen and water.
“The amount of water on the Moon was too low for life to possibly have existed there,” he said.
Most scientists believe the Moon was formed when a large object struck Earth, breaking off a chunk (a vast piece) that has since orbited Earth.
On Earth, goes one theory, water was released as steam from molten basalts (玄武岩) over time, eventually forming bodies of water.
“An understanding of whether the Moon was dry or wet will help us understand how water appeared on Earth,” Dr. Sharp said.

The Asian Games is the largest sporting event in Asia. Its predecessor (前身) was the Far Eastern Games. In 1948, Guru Dutt Sondhi, the leader of Indian sports, felt that the Far Eastern Games were not good enough to reflect the level of Asian sports and the unity spirit of Asian people, and suggested establishing the Asian Games so that all Asian countries could participate.
The Hangzhou Asian Games is the third Asian multi-sport event held in China, with 12,417 athletes from all 45 Asian countries and regions participating. Some rising sports that have recently gone viral among young people made their first appearance at this year’s Games, such as break dance and e-sports. Weiqi, a mind sport, has returned to the Hangzhou Games after a 13-year absence since it appeared at the Guangzhou Games in 2010. Certain regional sports in Asia, especially dragon boat racing, kurash, and sepak takraw, though not recognized as Olympic sports, were medal-awarded events at the Asian Games.
In the lead-up to the sporting event, the design details of the victory ceremony elements, including bouquets (花束), trays, and podiums, were revealed. The bouquet, named “Fruits of Victory”, blends traditional Chinese elements such as rice ears and lotus pods, signifying fruitful harvests, and wishes the athletes a journey of accomplishment and honor. The medal tray’s design is inspired by the ripples of the West Lake and describes the elegance of lakes and hills. The podium sports a purple rainbow on its outside, reflecting energy and innovation (创新). Its surface, painted in white, shows the spirit of unity, harmony and mutual success among Asian nations and regions.
With the Games fully prepared by organizers, it has surely impressed all the athletes and participants, leaving a legacy (遗产) of a smart and green event for people.

The ship, called Yara Birkeland, is owned by Yara, a company that makes fertilizer (化肥). The company wanted to develop a ship that wouldn’t pollute the earth and was completely self-driving. The company says that in the future everything, including loading (装载) and unloading the ship, will be done by machines.
The Yara Birkeland can carry 120 large containers like those pulled by trucks. But the ship is fully powered by electricity. The electricity is made by water energy, so there’s no pollution at all.
The Yara Birkeland won’t usually be going to Oslo and will only travel from Yarn’s factory to the port in Brevik.
In the future, as an autonomous ship, the Yara Birkeland is expected to operate without any humans. Yara plans to spend the next two years training and testing the ship.
The Yarn Birkeland will have many challenges. It will be moving in a narrow place. It will have to learn to deal with the changes of the water. The ship will need to pass under two bridges and avoid all the other traffic on the busy water. Finally, it will have to stop at one of the busiest ports in Norway.
The company hopes to solve most of these problems in the next two years. Yarn’s leader, Svein Tore Holsether, thinks that in three to five years, the ship might not even need to have controls that a human could use.
