When Han Duan started her professional career at 16, China’s national women’s football team was defeated in the final of the World Cup by the US. While she was asked to play in her first World Cup in 2003, she largely remained on the bench after the first match.
But things have changed. Now, Han is one of the most important players in China’s team. “I can’t wait to play. Life is short. You must make the most out of it,”Han always says like that.
Han wants every possible honor that a football player can get — an Asian Cup, a World Cup and an Olympic medal. She has always been good at sports, especially swimming and horizontal bars. At school, she was the fastest in the 60m and 100m.
But the reason she picked football was that she wanted to get more praises. “Football is for boys. But I feel more fulfilled when I can do better than them and win more praises,” she said. Later, when she entered a football school, the coach always asked Han to show others what to do.
However, nobody can be good at everything. Han described her singing as “howling” and the only school subject she was good at was Chinese. “I was very happy every time my essay was posted on the wall for my schoolmates to read. ”But Han still has some regrets about her school years. Her handwriting was terrible at school. She ever wanted to improve her handwriting but didn’t achieve much.
“My fans ask for my signature (签名), so I’d better practice and practice. It’s not too late,” she says.

But something about my friend’s words—“I can help organize the whole thing”—stuck with me. I felt obliged(有义务的)to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team’s website daily, feeling proud each time a donation ticked up our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.
When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.
So I enrolled in another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was ambitious. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn’t come in last. I followed it religiously and didn’t let anything get in my way.
Running up and down the city’s hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale’s, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.
I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis of cancer. “I don’t want you to feel guilty about anything.” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight lifted from my shoulders.
When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on.
Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.

Back in 2011, it seemed a risky decision to leave my job as a journalist to run the Sydney Story Factory. But later every time I see that light go on in a child’s eyes when he understands the power and joy of words, I know I made the right decision.
All our programs end in a publication. This might be an animation (动 画 片 )recorded on a DVD, or a beautiful book, but either way, it’s something the students can take home and proudly show to their family. There is nothing like the smile that spreads across the face of an eight-year-old when he holds that publication in his hands.
There’s one boy called John, I remember-whose mum almost dragged him through the door when we opened. He hated writing. But our teachers didn’t treat him as a kid who was bad at writing; they were curious to find out how he was going to finish his story and what would happen next. And very slowly John’s ideas came. When he threw one out, our teachers would say, “Yes. And?” Then he’d have another idea. At the end of that first course, he’d worked with a small group to produce a short animated film. Gradually, John came back himself. Nearly four years later he’s still coming.
John is a very different boy from the one who first walked through our door. He’s doing better at school, and he’s far more confident. When younger kids come into the Sydney Story Factory, he welcomes them and shows them around. We don’t claim credit for all of that, of course, but some part of it is because he has become something he never thought would be: a writer.

Then, after winning the women’s synchronized 10m platform gold together as partners on Saturday, the two young aces battled it out in the women’s 10m platform on Tuesday, when Quan edged out Chen to win the title by a margin (领先幅度) of just 2.55 points.
Quan and Chen are both the closest of partners and toughest of rivals. This seemingly complicated relationship, to themselves, however, is very simple. They are simply best friends that have grown up together.
“Quan is actually a very easygoing person. She is always the funniest one in our team. She always carries a smile, and she is the reason why our team always has such a great atmosphere,” said 18-year-old Chen during an exclusive interview with China Daily.
“She shines in so many ways. She has a very positive mindset (思想), and she is always energetic during training and competition. I hope she will always have the heart she has now and keeps chasing her dreams.”
“Chen is a pretty and charming girl, who never easily gives up,” said Quan.
“As athletes, we both have the desire to win. It’s a lie if we say we don’t. That is why we both work extremely hard and fight for the same goal. We never stop pushing ourselves,” said Chen. “But this is a very positive competition. Such a life, as a top national team diver, is a very special and unforgettable experience. She is the best encouragement to me, and that’s why I’m growing.”
But in Quan’s eyes, Chen is the more hardworking one of the two.“ She always tries her best at training and competition. I’m not as hardworking as she is,” Quan added.
“The Asian Games gold is just another decoration of my career, and it’s just a small test ahead of the Paris Olympics. There are still problems we need to fix,” said Chen.
“I hope my partner always has a champion’s heart to face future competitions and all of the challenges ahead.”
Quan, in her typically succinct way, added: “I wish her the same.”

At 15, Ma Long joined the national team. Although he was the least talkative boy of the players, his perseverance (坚持不懈) was as great as his overall strength in table tennis. In 2006, at 18, Ma Long, together with his teammates, won a team world championship.
Behind early fame of the genius is Ma Long’s almost paranoid (偏执的) strictness towards himself. His daily routine throughout four seasons was a two—point line between the dormitory and the training hall, and he was the first to arrive and the last to leave on a daily basis. He had been doing so for ten years, monotonously and repetitively. His coach Liu Guoliang once said, “I went to the table tennis hall on a Sunday morning for an unannounced inspection to see how many players were training on Sunday. Only one person in the men’s first team was there… A genius is not your fear, but your fear is that a genius works harder than you do.” Such a genius is Ma Long.
However, after joining the team for nearly a decade, he suffered various types of failure, and thus was questioned by everyone. At that time, Zhang Jike, another top player, returned to the national team. From then on, Zhang was so invincible that he achieved the personal Grand Slam (大满贯) within only 445 days, which was done in the shortest time in record. Seeing Zhang’s achievements, Ma Long, at the lowest point, had the idea of retiring. But he was unwilling to just “disappear”.

William Flaherty was born in Cincinnati. When he was 3, he was diagnosed with HLH. It is an often-fatal disease where the immune system attacks the body’s organs. There were days when they didn’t know if he would live through. The 17-year-old Flaherty has had more than 30 operations in his life, including a bone-marrow transplant from his older brother Charles in 2008.
At five, William skied for the first time. It helped a lot with low bone density and got him back in good shape. One year later, William moved to Puerto Rico and fell in love with the island. Puerto Rico doesn’t have snow and balancing the island and skiing life was tough. During the first few years a lot of it was pushed by his father and older brother Charles—himself a former Olympic skier. Motivated by his older brother, William wanted to give it a try himself. When he brought up to represent Puerto Rico in Alpine skiing, his friends laughed. However, he didn’t let it hold him back.
As a teenager, Flaherty had to balance his training with medical appointments and going to school. Even a cold could lay him up for two weeks, so William took extra pre-cautions over the last two years. While training, he wore an N95 mask the whole time and couldn’t ride the lift with anyone. After training, he came home directly, hid in his bedroom and stayed away from people. He managed to maintain straight A’s despite having to study on chairlifts and do final exams sometimes only days before racing. He had his English final three days before he left for Beijing.
“All my medical problems have definitely helped with my motivation. Skiing is really helpful because it forces me to focus on one thing. I really want to prove to all the other transplant survivors that you can do whatever you want in life. Move on with your life and achieve whatever you want,” he said.

Phiri’s father died when he was starting primary school. Then his mother abandoned him and he had to stay with his grandfather. His grandfather paid for his schooling through primary school but when he entered secondary school, he had to get various jobs to pay for his fees. Yet even in school, he was always drawing and making things in class.
After graduating, he did what he could to support himself by making animal sculptures from wires and sold them to tourists. His work was so popular that it caught the eye of Karen Beattie, director of Project Luangwa, a nonprofit dedicated to education and economic development in central Africa.
“I introduced him to a local welder (焊工),” Beattie told Newsweek.
In 2017, Phiri worked with welder Moses Mbewe during the rainy season, helping to make a complex set of doors for Project Luangwa. The piece sparked an idea in Beattie’s mind “handed him a bunch of scrap metal and said, ‘Make something with this.’ And he did. It was wonderful.”
Today, Phiri continues his art, using pieces of junk people bring him — keys, broken bike chains, old metal plugs and whatever scrap metal is lying around. He then turns the junk into abstract animals — elephants, cranes, giraffes, chameleons — and sells them at Project Luangwa headquarters. The community has recognized his talents.
“My dream is to earn enough to study art at the Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka and be able to make a living from it,” Phiri said, “And then to make very large sculptures.”
