School is a place that is familiar to everyone. Let’s find out what American students do in school.
An official dance party is held about twice a year in high schools in the United States. When the final football game is over for the season there is a homecoming party. Sometimes, students select a king from among the football players, and a queen from among the girls. Every student can attend and have fun with the help of their teachers. Sometimes, to the surprise of everyone, students, who devote all their time to study, come to the party in a beautiful dress.
The most exciting party that students can go to would have to be a prom (毕业舞会). Students attend it in dresses similar to those of Hollywood stars and the atmosphere is comparable to an Oscar Award party. Since such a party is for seniors, students usually stay up the night trying to enjoy their last year in high school.
In American schools, instead of the teachers going to different rooms, students have their own class schedules and go to different classrooms. When a student is away from school, they must have an explanation for being away along with the signature (签名) of a parent. The signed paper is then handed in to the school office. American students also enjoy a number of activities out of school like cheerleading (啦啦队), student government and a host of different sports.

But it’s been going really well lately. I’ve got a great doctor and I’m allowed to use my computer in class all the time. And guess what? This is really big news! When I listen to music on my headphones I can speak without stuttering (结巴)! That’s why I agreed to talk at the science fair today.
So I arrived at school early this morning to practise with my group. Our project is about using bacteria (细菌) to eat plastic. Unfortunately, when it was my turn to speak, I was so nervous that I chose the wrong music on my MP3 player. So instead of Mozart I was listening to my dance collection. The problem is that when I have dance music on the headphones I can’t stop myself talking in the same rhythm (节奏) as the music. So it just sounds like I’m rapping (说唱)!
Most people in school had never heard me speak before. They were really surprised when I started doing a rap about bacteria that eat plastic. I could see they were laughing at me. But when I finished they all stood up and cheered.
After we finished, everyone wanted to know me. They didn’t know about my secret use of the music on my headphones, so they just thought I was a great rapper! I checked my phone at lunchtime and I’ve got 187 new friend requests!

Making friends at a community college can be a bit more challenging compared to four-year schools. Since students usually don’t live on campus, there isn’t always a shared living environment.
Get involved on campus: Look for opportunities to get involved on campus, such as joining clubs, organizations, or student government. These activities provide a chance to meet and interact with other students who share similar interests or hobbies.
Be friendly and approachable:
Work out with a partner: College work will occupy most of your day. Your health, for one, is something you may start to neglect as you throw yourself fully into college life. Needless to say, ignoring your health is absolutely unacceptable.
A.Take advantage of group projects |
B.Know your group member better |
C.By participating in campus activities, you can expand your social circle and make new friends. |
D.A simple smile or greeting goes a long way in creating a friendly atmosphere. |
E.Community colleges offer programs that are two years long |

Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.
The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame. After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime, drug-taking, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting different kinds of fields of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.
Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage matters-young people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make a bigger difference for those students who need help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities, skill building meaningful involvement, expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe and fair environment, encourage personalized involvement, and actively create learning opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have a promising future, how they are designed and run matters.

Because we want students to have a common service experience that improves their Lawrenceville education and builds community within and beyond the gates, the Community Service graduation requirement is not based on a certain number of hours that a student must complete. Instead, students participate in three different types of community engagement.
1. Lawrenceville Community Action Project (LCAP) to be completed in 9th, 10th or 11th grade. LCAP examples include: a one-term weekly project; being an advisor at Lawrenceville School Camp or Performing Arts Camp; or participating in a Harkness Travel Program Service Trip.
2. Annual participation in the School’s Martin Luther King All-School Day of Service
3. One-time events ( All-School, House, club or team sponsored)—1-3 times before graduation depending on students, entering year.
Students may choose, from over 30 different weekly projects in the Trenton-Princeton- Lawrenceville area. Typically, students do these projects during the evening or on Sunday afternoons if they are playing a school sport, or on a Wednesday or Friday afternoon if they are involved in House or lifetime athletics.
Students also sometimes develop their own weekly projects based on their interests and talents. Past projects which were started by students include on-campus dance, chess and art programs for children.
Under the leadership of the Community Service Representative (CSR) , the Community Service Committee (formed by students who take a leadership role in community service) is responsible for organizing projects and for keeping the Houses informed about community service matters.

Paper is very good for keeping you warm. You have perhaps seen homeless men asleep on a large number of newspapers. In Finland, it is sometimes-40℃ in winter. The farmers wear paper boots(靴子)in the snow. Nothing could be warmer.
Each year, more and more things are made of paper. We have had paper cups and plates for a long time. But now we hear that chairs, tables, and even beds can be made of paper. With paper boots and shoes, you can wear paper hats, paper dresses, and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you throw them away and buy new ones.
The latest use of paper seems to be paper houses. These are not small houses for children to play in, but real, big houses for people to live in. You can buy a house with three rooms for about 500 dollars. You can put it up by yourself in a few hours, and you can use it for about five years.

Lots of research has shown social support and good health are connected. One recent study focuses on people with ovarian cancer. It says those with lots of social support had much lower levels of a protein connected to more dangerous cancers. This made their treatments (治疗) work better. In another study, women with breast cancer in a support group lived twice as long as those not in a support group. They also had much less pain.
Sheldon Cohen, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, says strong social support helps people deal with stress. "There may be more benefits as well," Cohen says. "Friends encourage you to look after yourself better. And people with more friends have higher selfconfidence, so they feel they have more control over their lives."
Other studies show people with fewer friends are likely to die sooner after having a heart attack, compared with people having a strong social network. Having lots of friends may even lower your chance of catching a cold. "People with social support have fewer immune (免疫的) problems and lower levels of stress," says Tasha Howe, who works at Humboldt State University. "We are social animals, and we were born to be in groups," Howe says. "We have always needed others to survive better. It's in our genes." People with a big social group are likely to be more at peace, which leads to better health, Howe says.
1. What does it mean when people have high levels of the protein mentioned in Paragraph 2?A.They have a stronger social network. |

C.They have low risk of developing cancer. |
D.They have high risk of developing dangerous cancers. |
