How to pick a great book to read

The world is full of great books, just waiting to be read. How can you pick one you’ll really like? Here are some tips:

What makes you happy?

If you have a favorite hobby or pastime, look for books about that activity.     1     Do there exist a few careers you’re interested in? You can find books about almost anything you like, and you’re more likely to enjoy reading a book if you’re already interested in its subject.

Fact or fiction?

2     Those are called fiction books. Novels, short stories, and fables are all examples of fiction. These books can transport you to another world or help you imagine something beyond your own experience. Nonfiction books give you the who, what, when, and why. They tell stories using facts—but that doesn’t mean they’re boring. Nonfiction books can bring to life everything from the first trip to the moon to what it’s like to explore the deepest oceans. Many of them read like novels from start to finish. Try both fiction and nonfiction books to see which you like better.

Find a family favorite.

What was your mother’s favorite book when she was your age? Or your dad’s? What about a sibling’s?     3     Then you can talk about what they liked about it and share your thoughts. It’s a fun way to get to know your family a little better, and to find a book you’ll enjoy!

    4

Your local library is a great place to find books that you’ll love, and you don’t have to search all by yourself. Tell a librarian about your interests—rock stars, sports teams, historical events, whatever you’re into—and the names of some books you already like. Your librarian can help you find other books that you’re sure to love. Your teacher is another good person to ask.

Launch a book swap

Why not get some friends together and trade favorite books? It’s always fun to see what your friends are reading. Even if they’re not exactly bookworms, you can all encourage each other to read and share books and authors you like. You also can look for book swaps in your area.     5

A.Ask an expert.
B.Set up a private library.
C.Ask them and give it a read.
D.Read as many books as possible.
E.Some books are entirely made up and imagined.
F.Are you really into dinosaurs or dogs or a specific celebrity?
G.It’s a great way to build your personal library for free!

【推荐2】Knowing how to get the conversation started is important, however, keeping it going is even more important. Here are some conversation skills that make people like you.

Invite people to share their lives

The most important conversation skill is to invite people to talk about their lives.     1     Show an interest in learning about a person’s history, family, ideas, or goals and it will likely get the conversation going right away.     2

Ask open-ended (开放式的) questions

Open-ended questions require more than just a yes-or-no answer. Ask open-ended questions that encourage other people to start discussing a topic in detail.     3     These questions really encourage other people to offer information about their story and invite them to share their opinion.

Wait for your turn to talk

Whatever you do, don’t interrupt. Instead, wait patiently for your turn to talk. Interrupting is one of the quickest ways to shut down a conversation and make other people uncomfortable. Show that you value what others are saying.     4

Request advice

Asking for advice shows that you value someone else’s opinion. Just because you ask for advice doesn’t mean you have to follow it.     5     Ask your co-worker if she likes your new jacket or ask a friend how you should handle a situation. Asking for advice can make others feel important.

A.Almost everyone enjoys talking about themselves.
B.You can ask for advice on both simple and serious things in life.
C.This shows that you are listening and helps clarify what you have heard.
D.If a person appears uncomfortable sharing something personal, change the subject.
E.If someone is talking about something you don’t understand, ask for an explanation.
F.Truly listen to what is being said rather than try to think of what you will say next.
G.For example, ask, “What made you decide to pursue nursing?” or “How did you like living in Hawaii?”

【推荐3】The year going from middle school to high school can be especially difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.

By the time students are on the way to high school, many of them start to believe the labels (标签) that are placed on them, such as “You’re smart” and “Maths isn’t your strong area”. People that have a fixed mindset (心态) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.

Today, many students face greater stress compared to their parents and grandparents. Parents should prepare them to fight the battle on the pillow and in the kitchen. When I say, pillow, I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety (焦虑) and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.

A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Usually, the more a student accepts who they are and on the road to becoming, the easier it is for them to build new friendships. Therefore, let’s encourage them to get involved (参与), have fun and play.

1. Which of the following represents a fixed mindset?
A.I’m at the starting point of my potential.
B.My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C.I should start studying a little earlier next time.
D.It’s okay if I fail; at least I've learned something.
2. The author might encourage parents to ________.
A.prepare a healthy meals for their kids
B.praise their kids when they do well in school
C.take their kids to visit their grandparents often
D.buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest
3. What is the third weapon mainly about?
A.Enjoying good health.
B.Acquiring the ability to say no.
C.Balancing schoolwork and play.
D.Developing time management skills.
4. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The sense of control.
B.The value of friendship.
C.The expectation of future.
D.The feeling of helplessness.
