Eva, an ambitious and kind-hearted 14-year-old girl, couldn’t be more excited to start her new job delivering newspapers in her neighborhood. All her friends boasted (夸耀) about their part-time jobs, and Eva couldn’t wait to prove herself as a responsible young adult.

On her first day, Eva got up before daybreak, drank a cup of strong coffee, and went out to load her bicycle’s basket with newspapers for her rounds. As she set off, the early morning sun rose above the horizon, bathing the sleepy streets in its soft, golden glow.

Riding along, she skillfully tossed (投挥) each paper onto the doorstep of her neighbors’ homes, accompanied by the happy songs of morning birds. Eva took pride in her accuracy and determination to do a good job.

As she approached her final delivery, however, she saw an unexpected scene. Mrs. Green, an elderly widow who lived alone with her dog, sat on her front steps, weeping softly. Noticing Eva approach, she wiped her eyes and tried to calm herself down.

Concerned, Eva stopped her bike and walked over to Mrs. Green. “Is everything alright? Can I help you with anything?” she asked, sincerity shining through her voice. Mrs. Green hesitated, but eventually managed to share her story. She explained that her beloved dog. Sam, had gone missing earlier, and her poor health limited her ability to search for him. The old lady wept as she expressed her fears of losing her best friend.

Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana, last December when something caught his eye. Twisted in a fallen tree, it looked like litter. As Alvin approached, he saw that the object was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child’s Christmas wish list.

“Dear Santa,” the handwritten note read. “My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll, puppy. With love, Luna.”

Alvin’s heart hammered in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scenario. He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he decided to make Luna’s wish come true too. Given the distance of more than 650 miles from Grand Cane to Liberal, Alvin followed the advice from his wife, Lee Ann Bamburg, and posted a photo of the balloon and the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender.

Meanwhile, Leticia Flores-Gonzalez, the mother of four-year-old Luna and her twin sister, Gianella, had no idea that such an effort was underway. It had been a hard year for Leticia and her girls. As COVID-19 spread, the family felt lonely, scared, and isolated, with no relatives living nearby.

On a particularly tough day last December, Leticia had come up with the idea of having the girls send letters to Santa by balloon. She told them that Santa would grab the balloons while he flew through the air on his sled. The twins were excited. Leticia helped them write down all the things that they dreamed Santa might bring them, and put the notes into Christmas red balloons. Then she took them outside to release their wishes to the universe on the chilly windy morning.

Jack was awakened by a gunshot. He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Jack saw that it was a long gun. A minute later, a man wearing hunting clothes came out of the woods.

Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly raised the gun and shot at it. Jack watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall bushes. The hunter didn’t move for a moment. Then he began to look for the bird.

“No hunting!” Jack came out in his nightclothes and shouted. “No hunting on my land!” The man called back, “Where can I hunt?” Jack said, “Go South!” And then he pointed in the direction behind the man. The hunter started to walk away.

After a while, Jack had just finished putting on his clothes when he heard another gunshot. He walked toward the lake. Fighting was the last thing he wanted, but the man must go. Suddenly he heard a bird s wings beating the dry grass. Jack moved quickly towards the sound. He saw a colored head... the head of a beautiful bird. The bird flapped its wings, one of which was broken completely.

Jack decided to take the bird home and treat its broken wing so that it could fly again. He was almost going through the woods when he heard the hunter behind him. “You have just found that bird?” the hunter asked, stepping closer, and said, “Give me that bird!”

“Leave here and don’t follow me,” Jack told him. The man’s face got red. “Mister,” he said, “I have been hunting here all my life. I grew up here.” Jack looked into the hunter’s gray eyes and raised his voice, “I do not know who you are and I do not care. I own this place and I am telling you to leave!” “Now look, Mister,” the hunter insisted, “be reasonable.” He raised his gun. A cold wind blew across Jack’s face. He felt a chill (冷风) going down his spine (脊柱).

Early in the morning I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar. The usually crowded beach was deserted except for two people. On one side of the boardwalk (木板人行道)was a woman who was cleaning the beach with a broom;on the other side was a lone figure sitting and staring at the sea.I chose a spot between them and began to play.

As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me.She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me.She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.

"You sure play beautiful music,” she said.“I think my friend would like your music.I want to hire you to play for her.” She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a few coins from her pocket.“I don’t have much, and I know you’re worth a lot, but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her? She’s going through a lot.I know the music will make her feel better.”

I told her I’d be happy to play for free.

As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me,“Annie,I got you a present to cheer you up.It’s a guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you.”

Annie didn’t move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an old coat pulled up to cover most of her face.

I sat next to Annie and played. As I played I put every thought into having good things happen for this woman.I played for quite a while.

Suddenly,Annie turned toward me and said,“You make it so beautiful.I can feel it inside my heart.”
