When talking about being overcome with emotions, both good and bad, we have a somewhat strange expression to describe that situation: to be beside yourself. So, if I say I am beside myself with joy, I am filled with joy! However, I can also be beside myself with sadness, anger, or any other emotions. The expression is useful and simple, but queer. It sounds as if someone has become two people. How can you be next to yourself? Being “beside yourself” is technically impossible.
In American English, you can simply say “I’m beside myself ” to mean you are very upset. For example, if you have a bad quarrel with a close friend, you might be beside yourself. You might shout, write an angry letter to your friend, or just go somewhere by yourself and cry. Here’s another situation. A high school student applies to several colleges. If all her applications are refused, she could be beside herself. She might stay up all night worrying about what to do next.
If a person becomes seriously ill, he could start talking in a way that does not make any sense. The patient may also start behaving strangely, walking around the room—back and forth. A doctor might say, “He is beside himself.”
We have another expression that is very similar to “being beside yourself”. We can also be “out of our minds”. We use this expression in the same way we use “beside oneself”. So we can be out of our minds with fear, with love, with happiness, or with any other emotions. And just like “beside oneself”. We also use this expression on its own without a specific emotion. So, if someone says or does something crazy—like learning how to ride a motorcycle on a dark, rainy night, you can simply say, “She is out of her mind!” You could also say the person is crazy or has lost her mind.

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter((中枢神经系统的)灰白质). This is the area of the brain which processes(加工,处理) information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals ” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

【推荐3】Usually, if you want to ask a stranger for the time, you would start by saying "Sorry to bother you. Do you know what time it is?". If you’re five minutes late for an appointment, you would generally greet the person by saying "Sorry. I’m late!".
We Brits pride ourselves on our polite manners towards one another in public. We use the word "sorry" in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has slightly changed over time. The two main dictionary definitions of "sorry" are:
(1) Feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or misfortunes.
(2) Feeling regret because you’ve done something wrong.
Now, think about this. Normally, when you want to ask a stranger a question, you start with "sorry to disturb you". In this situation, we aren’t saying sorry because we feel sad for that person or because we feel regret.
So what does "sorry" really mean? And why do Brits use it so much? Well, in the British culture, saying "sorry", or apologizing in general, is a way to be polite, especially to people who you don’t know very well. It’s also a very clever way to get what you want. In a recent experiment, an actor approached different strangers on a rainy day to ask if he could use their mobile phone in order to make a call. When he approached one group of strangers and asked them without apologizing first, he was only 9 per cent successful in borrowing their phone. However, when he apologized to another group of strangers about the bad weather before asking if he could use their mobile phone, he was 47 per cent successful. So maybe saying "sorry" is also a good method to get what you want!

Ryan Harran and Daniel Singh are both university esports team players. “Some days I don’t play at all because of school and work, but when I do play, it could be anywhere from three hours to six hours,” Harran said. “It is pretty mentally exhausting(令人疲惫的). There’s certainly eye strain (视疲劳) from just looking so hard,” Singh said.
New research looked at 65 college esports players and found they averaged (平均用) about 5 to 10 hours of gaming training daily, with many reporting overuse injuries including hand and arm pain and neck and back pain. “Poor posture can produce fast-growing pressure on your neck, back and shoulders,” said study author Dr. Hallie Zwibel. “Eye tiredness is the most commonly reported problem ...” Zwibel says players also report sleeplessness due to the blue light from the screens. In fact, esports can be such heavy work that players often retire by the time they’re in their mid-20s.
So far, 80 colleges and universities in the U.S. have esports teams. Researchers say schools need to provide prevention (预防) and treatment plans for esports injuries just as they do with traditional athletes. “Nutrition(营养), exercise, and stretches (伸展), especially stretches of the eyes to avoid eye tiredness during game play,” Zwibel said. And it’s not just college and university esports athletes who should be careful, and even if you don’t play at that level, Zwibel said, you can still suffer esports injuries like overuse injuries and eye tiredness from video games.
Singh says he keeps all that in mind to be his best on the game day. “I often roll my shoulders back and keep a straight back,” he said, adding that he also tries to do some exercise when he’s offline.

The researchers investigated one lesson’s impact on eating meat. They chose this particular behavior for three reasons, according to study co-author Eric, a philosopher at the University of California: students’ attitudes on the topic are variable, behavior is easily measurable, and eating less meat is good because it reduces environmental harm and animal suffering. The researchers studied students in four classes. Half of them read an article on the ethics of factory-farmed meat, watched an 11-minute video on the topic and joined a 50-minute discussion. The other half focused on charitable giving instead. Then, the researchers studied their meal-card purchases for that semester-nearly 14,000 receipts(收据)for almost 500 students. “It’s an awesome data set,” says Nina Strohminger, a psychologist who teaches business ethics and was not involved in the study.
For students who discussed meat ethics, meal purchases containing meat decreased from 52 to 45 percent-and this effect held steady for the study’s duration of several weeks. Purchases from the other group remained at 52 percent.
“That’s actually a pretty large effect for a pretty small intervention,” Eric says. Strohminger agrees, “The thing that still blows my mind is that just one ethics lesson should have such an obvious effect.”
Eric believes the greatest impact came from classmates or teaching assistants leading the discussions. Second, the video may have had an emotional impact. Least influential, he thinks was argument. Now the researchers are investigating the specific effects of teaching style teachers’ eating habits and students’ video exposure.
1. How did the researchers carry out the study?A.By making a comparison. | B.By introducing a concept. |
C.By presenting an argument. | D.By referring to another study. |
A.Annoys me. | B.Surprises me. | C.Bothers me. | D.Frightens me. |

It sounds like a conundrum for humans, but ground squirrels, a common species from North America, however, achieve this very easily every winter. A new discovery has revealed why, and the finding can really help astronauts with their physical health during long missions.
Long periods of inactivity are known to lead to muscle wastage in most animal species. But for hibernating (冬眠) animals, things happen in a different way. Not only can they survive without eating, but they also use minimal levels of energy while preserving their muscle mass and function during and after the whole winter.
It was Matthew Regan, an animal physiologist from the University of Montreal, who discovered why. In his research published in Science, he confirms a theory from the 1980s called “urea nitrogen salvage” (尿素氮回收) through the study of ground squirrels.
According to the theory, the gut microbes (肠道细菌) from these cute hibernators can recycle the nitrogen inure a and reuse it to build new proteins. In short, they can take advantage of waste, and turn it into something vital.
“Urea nitrogen salvage may help with the hibernating squirrels’ muscle function and contribute to their reproductive success during the mating season,” Regan said. “This way, when squirrels recover from hibernation, they are in good shape to deal with the intense physical activity that a successful reproduction demands.”
Regan’s findings could have a meaningful impact on the future of space travel. According to the researcher, if astronauts manage to copy the salvaging of urea nitrogen, they will be able to prevent muscle loss, a common issue among space travelers.
“Because we know which muscle proteins are prevented during spaceflight, we can compare these proteins with those that are enhanced by urea nitrogen salvage during hibernation,” Regan said. The researcher continued, “If there are the same parts between the proteins in spaceflight and the ones from hibernation, then it suggests astronauts can gain health benefits by learning this process.”
