Off-campus housing is not common at Middlebury College. With all the amenities (便利设施) a student could want offered on campus, many students see no reason to find a rental on their own in the town of Middlebury. However, the number of students who choose to pursue off-campus housing is rising, according to Associate Dean of Students for Residential and Student Life Doug Adams.
Adams said that a highly active academic scene on campus is central to the College’s identity. “Middlebury is a residential college. As such, student life happens on the campus — classes, dining, athletics, events, etc.,” he added. “This is a core element to the College’s mission where learning happens both inside and outside the classroom.”
Nevertheless, the residential experience may be both a blessing and a curse. “Students who live off campus are sometimes seeking distance from the noise of campus living,” said Adams. “Other reasons cited by students include a desire to live closer to the local community; a change from living on campus; wanting to live on their own. Off-campus living can offer more variety in terms of housing options — apartments, houses — as well as the option to live off the College meal plan. Students will often say that they are looking for a ‘homey’ experience.”
Anna Stevens, a senior applying for off-campus housing, said the attractions of the residential college experience fade slightly by senior year. “Living in dormitories was fun for my first two years because there seemed to always be people around,” she said. “But, as we got older, my friends and I no longer wanted to live with people and we wanted to be able to have gatherings without considering the other residents, public safety, etc.”
However, moving off campus can come with its headaches. Obviously, expenses such as rent and transportation come into play, as well as a new set of rules regarding living next to non-student neighbors.

They do a lot of practical learning, such as raising salmon (鲑) from egg to fry (鱼苗) in the classroom and then releasing them into lakes.”
It is through a program called Salmon in the Classroom. Kate Morse, program director for the project, is in charge of the program. With this project, students have a completely different attitudes because they know what it takes to actually go through the stages of a salmon.
They think learning about the habitat temperature and the effects of climate change is more crucial now than ever. In 2022, the Arctic had its sixth-warmest year on record. But this is unusual in raising salmon, which require cold water to survive. “We had a failure in our equipment and it brought the temperature up about five degrees”, said Hodges. “Just warming it that much just killed our eggs.”
They can also observe how deadly pollutants can be to salmon’s habitat. During the months when the salmon are in the classroom, students like to sit by the tank to observe. “For instance, putting hand sanitizer (消毒剂) on your hands and then putting your fingers in the tank, you’ve polluted the tank,” said Hodges.
Each year in May, she takes her students on the Salmon Field Trip, where they will name the fish and get to release the salmon they’ve raised in class.
“The best part is getting to release them after watching them hatch from eggs and grow into fry and taking care of them,” said Fisher, a student. “You get to say goodbye.”
“I went to release them last year and the lake was still covered with ice,” said Styrling, a student. “I fell in. It was cold, but it was still funny.”

I think the biggest differences between the junior and the senior high school are the homework load (工作量) and size of the school.I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 55,but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before, gotten an A,and not remembered anything later.I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more.Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year.If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some junior high schools, they’re also around in senior high schools.I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you’re applying for (申请) a college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow their footsteps.Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.

She and both of her kids, who are 14 and 3 years old, tested positive and fell ill in December, 2020. Their family members did their best to bring them supplies and food, but since they live far away, it wasn’t easy. “I was really sick the first week, so it was really hard for me to take care of both of them, she said.
Right after she got her test results, Lisette made sure her family was quarantined (隔离). She even placed a box on her front door so their mail carrier could put their letters inside instead of touching the mailbox. But two weeks later, Lisette opened the front door to find a special care package (包).
Thinking the sweet gift was from a relative, Lisette opened the box to find several get-well essentials like chicken noodle soup, milk, and cookies. There was also a handwritten note only it wasn’t from a family member at all. It was from Mary, their mail carrier, a stranger Lisette had only briefly spoken to once.
“Get-well wishes… I hope you all are feeling better!” the note read.

But the playground is not just a place for fun. It is also a place where students can learn, grow and gain independence. Everything — from the kind of surface it sits on, to the color of its sitting areas, to the placement of the surrounding fence — is specifically designed for kids with autism (自闭症).
Mark Rapaport is the managing director of autism services at the Transformation Academy. He said the school accepts students aged 5 to 21 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and are lower-functioning.
Rapaport said the goal of Transformation Academy is to make the students as independent as possible in an effort to help them prepare for adult life. The school aims to provide help with developing communication and social skills, as well as practical abilities like cleaning or cooking.
The playground designed by Maryland company Sparks@Play, using structures manufactured by Landscape Structures, Inc. took a month to develop, said Dan Hack. He works for Sparks@Play and helped lead the playground’s design. Hack said he and others spent weeks getting to know the students and understanding their needs before any building was started. The design process involved physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists. The huge $500,000 project was funded with support from the state of Maryland and the nonprofit Orokawa Foundation.
Parts of the playground that seem small are very important for children with autism and other disabilities. The surrounding fence extends into a wooded area to make it seem more open. And the ground under the play areas is made of soft, but solid materials to support students using wheelchairs or crutches. The benches on the outside of the playground look simple from far away, but are “one of our most inclusive sensory” elements, Hack said. They have many different colors that bring about feelings of calm and curiosity. They are also made with smooth material that can be felt and moved. The academy’s Rapaport said if a child starts to feel uneasy, they can sit down and feel the bench, which can help them relax.
