Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay, Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the U. S. top out at an average of 19.42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.

“5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age,” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.

Augmented reality glasses (AR实境眼镜) and virtual headset (虚拟现实耳机) haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or perhaps even replace — smartphones.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了SOURCE Global公司的一个特殊制水设备,该设备名为Hydropanels,该设备是由内置太阳能电池板供电。

【推荐1】SOURCE Global is one of the many companies around the world harvesting water from the air. Named Hydropanels, its devices are powered by built-in solar panels (太阳能电池板).

Atmospheric water generators (AWGs), like SOURCE’s, are machines that produce water from the surrounding air. These devices have been around for about ten years and traditionally they’re based on condensation — cooling water vapor (蒸汽) to collect water drops. This process, however, can use a lot of electricity and only work in places with a high amount of water contained in the air. These are what caused SOURCE to develop a more flexible and practical solution.

Its solar panels power a fan that draws in the air. Inside the device, the air travels through a special material that traps the water vapor to produce water. As it is collected, chemical elements, magnesium and calcium, are added to the water to improve its taste and provide possible health benefits.

In Dubai, where the company’s largest water farm is located, it produces 1.5 million liters of water every year. SOURCE has fixed its Hydropanels around the world at hospitals, schools and worksites that have difficulties accessing water. SOURCE plans to create a plastic-free bottled water brand (品牌) and sell it to hotels and holiday centers at about the same price as other bottled water brands. Its next partnership will be in Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, where a development company is aiming to build 18 hotels that will serve SOURCE’s water.

Over 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress and while many companies working on AWGs hope their devices will help solve this problem, that would be unlikely, according to Keith Hays with Bluefield Research, a company that addresses water challenges. High upfront costs mean it takes around 10 years for AWGs to be cost-competitive, he says and they generally produce a small part of the water that a well or seawater desalination (脱盐) system can supply. Vahid Fotuhi with SOURCE understands the challenges, but he says that Hydropanels help reduce the use of plastics and the environmental footprint, and their selling points remain strong.

1. What does the underlined word “These” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The disadvantages of using electricity.B.The expectations of future growth.
C.The features of condensation.D.The limitations of AWGs.
2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The working process of Hydropanels.
B.The need for water collected from the air.
C.The importance of applying renewable energy.
D.The reason for adding chemical elements to water.
3. What is one of SOURCE’s plans?
A.To create a brand to sell plastic-free bottled water.
B.To build 18 hotels equipped with Hydropanels.
C.To produce 1.5 million liters of water every year.
D.To fix its Hydropanels at hospitals and schools.
4. What does Vahid Fotuhi think of Hydropanels?
A.They are highly competitive in price.
B.They produce fresher water than wells.
C.They offer clear environmental benefits.
D.They play a key role in reducing water stress.

2】Since time immemorial, people have been searching for the fountain of youth. Surprisingly, the dream of human immortality is, according to some scientists, not so far out of reach.

Professor Brian Cox, Google’s Ray Kurzweil, and Tesla head Elon Musk all agree on not only the possibility of human immortality but also that it is not too far away. The solution, they say, is something called the “technological singularity”

The singularity is a combination of humankind with computers, namely uploading the contents of one’s brain onto a hard drive. In that way, a person’s consciousness can stay alive after a physical body gets worse. This is based on the idea that a human brain is simply a machine, and there is, according to Professor Cox, “no reason at all why we cannot simulate (模拟)human intelligence,” using a computer.

Although Professor Cox did not say when the singularity would occur, Google’s Ray Kurzweil predicts that the singularity will happen as early as 2045. By 2100, he says, human body parts will be replaceable by machine parts. Further, by uploading our brains onto a computer, we will be able to toy with it, and become “able to expand the scope of our intelligence a billion fold.

Elon Musk agreed with the assessments of the other scientists, even going so far as saying that the chances that we are not in a computer simulation right now are “one in billions”.

Google is preparing for a future where you can download personalities onto robots. For example, you might be able to download onto your robot a celebrity personality, or of the personality of your deceased grandmother. The search engine giant filed a patent for this download process recently. So they definitely believe that the singularity is just around the corner. All you have to do is hold on until 2045, and soon you can effectively live in the cloud.

1. What does the underlined word “immortality” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Being perfect.B.Being wealthy.
C.Living forever.D.Continuous improvement.
2. How did the writer illustrate the idea of human immortality in the text?
A.By listing data.B.By presenting quotations.
C.By doing experiments.D.By making comparisions.
3. Which of the following can Elon Musk most probably agree with?
A.Computers are much smarter than humankind.
B.Computers can never surpass humankind at all.
C.Computers and humankind are quite different.
D.Computers can be another version of humankind.
4. How can humankind improve by 2100 according to the text?
A.Physically and intelligently.B.Individually and corporately.
C.Psychologically and spiritually.D.Emotionally and materially.

【推荐3】Tablets(平板电脑) are useful devices, but their big screens always make them as a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit neatly into the hand? Now something like a tablet-shaped but foldable(可折叠的) phone is about to become available. In February, Samsung and Huawei both introduced foldable phones, the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X separately, to the public for the first time. Mobile phone use has entered the “foldable future”, the Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their bendable screens, give us the larger screens we want but still fit easily into the pocket. The technology could change other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers, which could help increase available space to the maximum. In a keynote address, Justin Denison, Samsung’s senior vice president, called the foldable screen “the basis for the smartphone of tomorrow”. “It’s a blank canvas (画布) for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the foldable future? According to tech news website Android Authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of ten foldable screens produced were defective or unusable. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to almost 90 percent. However, at present these foldable devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17, 500 RMB. That's a price that few people will be able to afford.

But if the foldable device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming. Patrick Moorhead, an industry expert told The Verge, “Few are debating if foldable mobile displays are the future of smartphones; the only question is when and by whom.”

1. What do we know about foldable devices?
A.They are too big to fit into the pocket.
B.They could bring us much convenience.
C.They have become available in January.
D.They are a burden to carry around without a bag.
2. What can we learn from Denison’s words?
A.The foldable screen has great potential.
B.The technology could change other devices too.
C.There must be many problems with the technology.
D.The production of foldable phones will soon decrease.
3. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.completeB.proper
C.imperfectD.normal
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Types of foldable phones.
B.The coming of foldable devices.
C.Popular devices on the market.
D.Difficulties in producing foldable phones.
