Could the Moon Help Fuel the Earth?

Fossil fuels have been powering the earth for over 200 years, but reserves of coal, crude oil (原油) and natural gas may run out one day.

The long-term solution may lie nearly half of a million kilometers away on the moon. It contains large quantities of helium-3 (氦-3), a form of gas that could     1     (potential) be extracted (提炼), brought back to the earth and used as fuel without damaging the environment.

“The real     2     (attract) of helium-3 is that it is a nuclear process,     3     doesn’t release any greenhouse gases,” said     4     engineering professor. “That would be the     5     (big) advantage-nuclear power without nuclear waste, and it would be a goal for the earth.”

Present on the earth in small quantities, helium-3     6     (use) in medical diagnostics (医学诊断), but it is yet to be used as a source of energy. However, there are large enough quantities of helium-3 on the moon to power the earth for a thousand of years or so and provide the earth     7     all of the energy.

But     8     (bring) helium-3 back to the earth is a complex process. The gas,     9     (find) in the moon’s soil, would need to be heated to 600℃ before being extracted and transported back to be turned into fuel in nuclear power     10     (plant). Even so, the project is beginning to interest some of the world’s leading nations in the environmental and economic potential of helium-3.

If you stop a random person on the street in China, there’s     1     pretty good chance that their surname would be either Wang, Li, Zhang, Liu or Chen.

That’s because those are the five most common surnames in China. There are a few reasons for this: China is less racially diverse than countries such as the US,     2     quantities of minority groups increase surname diversity. It also     3     (have) to do with language. You can’t just add a stroke to a Chinese character     4     random and create a new surname, like the way you can add a letter to an English name. But there’s also another factor at play: technology. China’s digital revolution has     5     (dramatic) transformed daily life, and many of these systems rely on a     6     (limit) list of standardized Chinese characters. To try to address this, experts have increased the database from 32, 000 characters to 70, 000 characters. They’re still working to expand it     7     (include) more than 90, 000 characters.

“The culture of surnames     8     (pass) down in our country for thousands of years with a deep and broad influence,” said the Ministry of Public Security. By the Song Dynasty, a book called the Hundred Family Surnames     9     (list) several hundreds of the most common surnames, had become a classic text taught to children. Chinese surnames are central to people’s     10       (identity); they hold origin stories, reveal historic patterns of migration, and represent a direct tie to a person’s ancestry and heritage.

It is known to us that every year of high school is a hard and busy time. You may have trouble    1    (get ) enough sleep. We all know that not getting enough sleep is not good for our health,     2    it has been found that less sleep could even cause us    3     (have) fewer friends.

According to researchers from the University of California, people who don't get enough sleep are less willing to socialize with others. They are    4     (simple) too tired to go out.

The researchers carried    5    a small study. They tested 18 young participants (参与者) who had just had a good night's sleep, and tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants watched videos of people    6     (walk) toward them. When each person on the video got too "close" , they could choose to stop the video.

The results showed that the participants kept each person at    7    stance of 60 percent further back if they hadn't gotten enough sleep. But when the participants got a goodnight's sleep, they allowed the person to get much    8     (close) to them.

So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person,     9     (sleep) well might help."One night of good sleep makes you feel more outgoing and    10     (social) confident,"   Walker said.

People need to vote to decide who will be     1     (they) president. But humans aren’t the only creatures on Earth to vote. In fact, there are     2     (variety) animals which also make plenty of     3     (decide). They just do it differently for different reasons.

Instead of voting for a president, animals vote     4     where to live or when to hunt (狩猎). Take meerkats (猫鼬) for example. When     5     (search) for food, the animals get together for protection from hunters. But when a meerkat wants to speed up the search, the animal will make a "move call”. If three or more meerkats make this call, an agreement to speed up can     6     (reach).

African wild dogs also vote in groups. A group of scientists     7     study the behavior of animals have found that the animals also vote to decide whether to hunt. How do the dogs vote for hunting? They sneeze (打喷嚏)! Whether the dogs will actually go for a hunt is decided by     8     number of sneezes. The more the dogs sneeze, the     9     (likely) it is that they will look for a meal.

Just like humans, animals don’t always agree with one another. But joining in group determinations     10     (help) make sure of their survivals. It is extremely interesting to observed how animals vote for a decision and stick together.
