For many years, my only companion was our dog, Sno. A small but mighty Bichon Frise, our dog may have looked ordinary, but he was smart, creative, and always ready for ice cream and rolling at my request. While I worked, he slept, waking to chase the red cat from next door, greet a delivery person, or sit in the sunshine.

We didn’t agree on everything, especially when to get up and when to go to bed. He sighed with boredom when a project was due and I didn’t have time to play. He didn’t understand weekends, deadlines, and visitors who left him. However, we both agreed on walking.

At least once a week, we took a long walk to the beach. For him, there were tall grasses and exciting smells. For me, there were other dog walkers and neighbors to catch up with. We returned tired, thirsty, and very happy.

Being a dog with huge ambition and short legs, Sno needed several breaks along the way. The one at the entrance to the beach was his favorite, possibly because he knew we were circling back home. There, on a windy summer day, he looked up at me just as I was looking down at him. We both grinned (咧嘴笑). This was the best walk ever.

When he was old and dying, our walks were shorter and closer to home. I’d take him for a walk and then go out for my own walk, wandering around the beach like we used to do. I always grinned when I got to the entrance to the beach, remembering that summer day when he was young and energetic.

In his final days, Sno still insisted on walking. It took twice as long to take even the shortest walk, but we enjoyed every step. Then came that Sunday when he leaned hard toward the beach walk. How could I refuse his last-walk wish?

I was eight years old and wasn’t aware of all the arrangements being made for our journey as a family to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in London. My father reluctantly had to sell our property in Queensland. The day before we boarded the ship, Father unwillingly said goodbye to his five-year-old cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Spider for many weeks.

Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC and other regional newspapers. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seems Spider just kept running and searching for us. As he was cattle dog, my father thought he would shoe or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secrets hope that Spider was still alive.

We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.

We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Spider.

I was looking to buy a horse that could be a backyard buddy, a friend and new member of the family. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, s0 I went to the local mothly horse auction to see if I might rescue one of the horses from a potential death sentence. There are always horses there who have plenty of life left and just need someone to show up and recognize their value , see their heart, and offer them a space where they can just be a loved horse.

Toward the end of the auction, a young col (小马) was brought into the ring. It was clear he hadn’t been handled and was not in good shape. He had patches of bare skin where his hair had been whipped away. He had scars where his mouth had been tied shut with a wire. His legs were covered with cuts and sores. Nobody raised their arm to place a bid. Too small to interest the meat buyers.

The auctioneer launched the bidding at 8$00. The price came down, and down. 1 felt a mixture of disgust and anger that these people were s0 incapable of seeing the beauty and will to live in this horse. Finally, the auctioneer slowed down and said, “Okay folks, who will take this guy home for fifty bucks?”

ME, apparently! My arm shot up into the air, declaring to the entire crowd that my heart is the softest.

BANG! The gavel came down, and I now owned the colt who had no training and a terrible start in life. But in this particular moment, nothing was more important than helping set this horse on a new path in life.

I saw my new horse alone in a large paddock (围场). I walked over to the gate and sod there for a while. I just stood there, watching him. I didn’t want to own this horse, and I didn’t want to train him.

For as long as Mia could remember, she had been terrified of snakes. She had skipped the class field trip to the zoo, and on the day James had brought his pet snake into their classroom, Mia had run into the hallway, tears pooling in her eyes. With every passing year, Mia’s fear of snakes seemed to be getting worse. Recently, she had started to avoid playing in the local park because sometimes there were small garden snakes in the grass.

Jess had been Mia’s best friend since kindergarten and knew all about Mia’s snake Phobia (恐惧症). She used to find it funny, but it had grown worrisome. If Mia’s irrational fears kept getting worse, how long would it be before she was afraid to even leave her own house?

One day, Mia went to visit Jess since she got to know that Jess had bought the newly released video game, The King, which Mia took great interest in. As she stepped into Jess’s room, she froze. “What’s that?” Over jess’s shoulder, she could see a massive glass tank in which logs, leaves and stones were scattered. Suddenly, a scaly tail flashed out from beneath some leaves. Mia jumped and let out a shriek, instantly bounding back into the hallway.

“Does my pet snake really bother you that much?” Jess asked, looking both concerned and a little guilty. Mia nodded, feeling betrayed. How could her best friend keep a snake, knowing how Mia felt?

“Tiger is totally contained in the tank, Mia.” Jess offered weakly. “Come on! I know how badly you want to play the video game. It’s just a few steps around Tiger’s home to get to my computer.” Feeling crazily eager to play the game and knowing the snake couldn’t escape the tank, Mia decided to be brave. “I am going to try, but don’t let me go anywhere near Tiger.” All went on wheels. Mia enjoyed herself playing the game though she still felt a little nervous when noticing Tiger occasionally lifting her head to let her tongue dart out and making her way from one side to the other in the tank.

The girls played the game every day after school that week. Mia was still bothered by her fear, but at least her stomach wasn’t churning anymore when she thought about it. During the weekend, before the two girls started to play the video game, Jess asked Mia to close her eyes for she had a surprise for her. Mia closed her eyes, rocking back and forth in anticipation.

“You can open them now.”

Jess explained that she didn’t feel like being a good friend by letting Mia’s fears get so out of control, so she brought home Tiger, the most harmless snake, to help Mia conquer the fears.
