AI is a tool, a powerful tool that for the first time in human evolution provides the means to improve analyses, thinking, decision capabilities and creativity. These four human capabilities can be found in most of our daily activities, at personal, social and business level. Having a tool can definitely improve our capabilities.

As any tool we invented, it robs us of something: While AI has increased human strength and required fewer resources, it reduces the need for a single person to be “strong”! We have plenty of examples of complains from the past towards the appearance of new tools.

Plato, the great Greek philosopher, once reported in his dialogues of concerns raised by the use of writing, a tool that would have robbed people from their capabilities to memorize, since memories could be shifted to writings on parchment (羊皮纸). Therefore, in a way, there is nothing really new in our reaction to this new tool.

The opportunities offered, however are huge, and as for previous invented tools, the time will soon come when we will no longer have an option to use or not use AI.

The IBM Global AI Adoption Report based on 2022 data point s out that only 1 company in 5 is not using or planning to use AI. According to McKinsey and Gartner, the two most well-known consulting (咨询) companies, most medium and large companies are already using AI and by the end of this decade all will be using it as an integral part of their activity support. In other words, by the end of this decade, there will be two kind of companies, those using AI and those that are out of business.

1. According to the author, what has AI done for us?
A.Rob us of some resources.B.Reduce personal strengths.
C.Improve our capabilities.D.Make decisions for humans.
2. Why is Plato mentioned in the passage?
A.To highlight the power of new inventions since ancient times.
B.To provide an example of people's concerns about new inventions.
C.To show that people have been making new inventions all the time.
D.To make sure that people understand the importance of new inventions.
3. What does IBM Global AI Adoption Report show?
A.Only large companies will use AI.
B.Mckinsey and Gartner are already using AI.
C.Most companies are using or planing to use AI.
D.There will be two kinds of companies in ten years.
4. Which one is a suitable title for this text?
A.Why Should We Use AI?B.Where Is AI Leading Us?
C.What Should We Do with AI?D.To Use or Not to use AI, It's a Question.

【推荐1】Thick dust rose and a large building collapsed. This was the scene in Zhu Zhou,Hunan Province on May 17. Nine people were killed and 16 injured.
Things were similar in the Sichuan earthquake. Thousands of people were buried in the ruins and lost their lives. What if we could have warned them?
People are always _________ to find a way of preventing buildings’ collapse. Better materials and technology help, but they are not a solution.
Just like humans,a building has its own life cycle from “birth” to “death”.If we know when a building is going to collapse,we can repair it in advance or get out of it before it falls. Now,scientists at the University of Illinois have developed a material that turns red before it breaks. The invention could be used in things like climbing ropes or bridge supports. The research was led by Nancy Sottos,a professor at the university’s Beckman Institute, and Douglas Davis,a graduate research assistant.
The secret behind the color—changing material is a type of molecule (分子).A molecule is a group of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Imagine you and your friends standing in a circle, holding hands. Each person stands for one atom, your hands represent the bonds, and the entire circle represents a molecule. If one person lets go of his or her hands, the molecule changes color. The research team put the molecule into a soft material. When the researchers stretched the material,it turned bright red for a few seconds before it broke into two pieces. When they repeatedly stretched and relaxed the material, without breaking it,it only turned a little red.
The major problem is that light can get rid of the red color. When the team shone bright light on the molecule, the broken bond was fixed, and the color disappeared. Scientists have yet to do more research before the color—changing molecules can be used outside the lab.
1. What does the passage mainly introduce?
A.The collapse of a large building in Zhu Zhou, Hunan Province.
B.A type of molecule that can be put into a soft material
C.A material that turns red before it breaks.
D.A way of preventing building from collapsing.
2. The underlined words “racking their wits” in the third paragraph mean ________.
A.suffering a lotB.collecting beyond imagination
C.losing a lotD.thinking very hard
3. Which of the following is a WRONG statement?
A.Thousands of people died from the collapse of buildings in the Sichuan earthquake because they hadn’t been warned.
B.There is no building that will never collapse.
C.A new material has been applied to buildings to warn people of collapse.
D.A color—changing material can turn red before it breaks.
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The color—changing molecules are certain to be used outside the lab.
B.There will be less collapse with the help of the color—changing material.
C.The bright light may make the material’s warning system useless.
D.The problem caused by bright light will be solved by scientists soon.

【推荐2】With low temperatures, radiation and high-energy particles, the vacuum of space is nothing but harsh (严酷的). Can you imagine spending six hour walking in space? Chinese astronauts did just that on their latest spacewalk.

On Aug 20, Chinese astronauts Liu Boming and Nie Haisheng went out on the second spacewalk of the Shenzhou XII mission, according to the China Manned Space Agency. The pair set up and adjusted equipment, showed their spacesuits and tested the large robotic arm and other spacewalk-related devices.

Despite the astronauts’ skill, spacewalking is a challenging task. Luckily, their bulky (臃肿的) spacesuits protect them. A spacesuit is like a small space station. It has everything astronauts need when they carry out a spacewalk.

China’s Feitian spacesuits have six layers. The innermost layer collects astronauts’ urine (尿液). There are also four layers that help control the temperature and air pressure inside the suit. Spacesuits are filled with air, so they look like they’re puffed up (膨胀). The sixth layer is made of special fibers that cover astronauts from radiation, according to The Paper.

Astronauts are connected to the space station with safety ropes. The suit has headphones and speakers for astronauts to communicate. There is also a mirror on the wrist that astronauts can use to check their suits.

The first Feitian suit was made in 2008. Zhai Zhigang wore it to carry out China’s first spacewalk, which lasted about 19 minutes.

The suits Chinese astronauts wear today are the second generation of Feitian. They can support longer walks lasting up to eight hours and can be used more often. The first generation could only be used five times within two years, while the second generation can be used 15 times within three years. Each suit costs around 30 million yuan, and it takes four months to make just one according to Ifeng News.

1. What can we learn about the Chinese astronauts’ latest spacewalk from the text?
A.It was China’s first spacewalk.
B.It lasted a total of six hours.
C.It was carried out this spring.
D.It was completed by three astronauts.
2. How were China’s Feitian spacesuits designed to protect astronauts?
A.They include five layers with different functions.
B.The innermost layer adjusts the temperature.
C.Three other layers control air pressure inside the suit.
D.The outermost layer protects astronauts from radiation.
3. According to the text, what do Chinese astronauts need when carrying out spacewalks?
a. headphones        b. speakers        c. mirror
d. radar             e. compass        f. safety ropes
A.acdf.B.abef.C.abcf.D.cdef.
4. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about?
A.Disadvantages of the first Feitian suit.
B.The process of making the second Feitian suit.
C.New technology applied to the second Feitian suit.
D.Distinctions between the two generations of Feitian suits.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。主要报道了一辆Uber自动驾驶汽车深夜在亚利桑那州坦佩市发生交通事故,撞死了一名行人,文章还讲述了自动驾驶汽车的发展。

【推荐3】A self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian in a late-night accident in Tempe, Arizona, police said on Monday. The accident is believed to be the first pedestrian death involving the technology of autonomous vehicles.

The gray SUV had an operator in the driver’s seat and was traveling at about 40 miles per hour in autonomous mode when it struck a woman who was walking across the street late Sunday night, Tempe police said. The pedestrian was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.

“The City of Tempe has been supportive of autonomous vehicle testing because of the innovation and promise that the technology may offer in many areas, including transportation options for disabled residents and seniors,” Tempe Mayor, Mitchell said in the statement. “Testing must occur safely. All indications we have had in the past show that traffic laws are being obeyed by the companies testing here. Our city leadership and Tempe police will pursue any and all answers to what happened in order to ensure safety moving forward.”

Self-driving cars have been praised by technology companies as the wave of the future. Autonomous cars are already being in more than 30 cities around the world, with companies investing more than $80 billion into research and development.

“Everyone recognized that someone was going to die in a crash involving an autonomous vehicle eventually,” Bryant Walker Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina who studies risks in automated driving systems, told NBC News. “As good as that technology tries to be, mistakes can happen, or it may be one of the small fraction of crashes. I just think everybody kind of hoped that one wouldn’t come this soon.”

Smith added that because federal and state agencies don’t have the resources to monitor individual vehicles, the responsibility for safety falls on the individual companies running the technology.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced that a four-person team has been sent to Tempe to investigate the crash.

1. Which of the following is true about the accident?
A.The woman was dead on the spot.
B.The accident is under investigation.
