Caring for plants is a fantastic skill for kids to have. There are so many benefits of gardening for kids, yet the importance of gardening in early childhood is often undervalued. Here are some reasons why to teach your kids to garden.

Gardening makes kids stronger.     1     The simple act of digging in the ground and moving things around helps build muscles and improve hand-eye coordination (协调能力).

Gardening is good for kids’ well-being. Studies find that kids who garden have reduced large amounts of anxiety, stress and tend to be in a better mood.     2     We love to see the positive and life-changing experiences plants and gardening bring to kids.

3     Interacting with nature encourages the learning process. In addition to being able to touch the soil and seeds (种子), children can also spot the differences between plants, in terms of size and color, smell different things, and hear sounds of different insects.

Gardening is beneficial for picky eaters.     4     Planting seeds, caring for and growing produce and then harvesting it excites a kid’s interest. It’s exciting to introduce a new or disliked food in another way, and over time they will learn to try new foods.

Gardening strengthens connection. Through gardening activities, kids grow closer to their parents and make many new friends.     5

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了一个叫CETI的项目旨在通过人工智能分析动物之间的对话,从而可以更好地保护动物。

【推荐1】Begus is a linguist at the University of California, Berkeley. He got the chance, last summer, to observe sperm whales in their wild Caribbean habitat. With him were marine biologists and roboticists. There were also cryptographers and experts in other fields. All have been working together to listen to sperm whales and figure out what they might be saying. They call this Project CETI. Project CETI’s team is not the only group turning to AI for help deciphering animal talk. Researchers have trained AI models to sort through the sounds of prairie dogs, dolphins, naked mole rats and many other creatures.

Long before AI came into the picture, scientists and others have worked toward understanding animal communication. Some learned that vervet monkeys have different calls when warning of leopards, eagles or pythons. Others discovered that elephants communicate in rumbles too low for human ears to hear. Bats chatter in squeaks too high for our hearing. Still other groups have explored how bees communicate through dance.

“It took us a long time to measure all these things,” says researcher Karen Bakker. AI, she notes, has the potential to greatly speed up this type of research. Perhaps one day we’ll be able to use AI to build a futuristic CHAT box that translates animal sounds into human language, or vice versa.

“AI could eventually get us to the point where we understand animals,” says Bakker. What’s interesting to her is what we can learn from how bats and other creatures talk among each other. We should listen to animals in order to better protect them, she argues. For example, a system set up to record whales or elephants can also track their locations. This can help us avoid whales with our boats or protect elephants from illegal hunters.

1. What is Project CETI aimed at?
A.Applying AI to animal research.
B.Improving the living conditions of sperm whales.
C.Preventing animals from being hunted.
D.Decoding animal talk.
2. How is the second paragraph developed?
A.By listing figures.B.By citing examples.
C.By making comparisons.D.By analyzing causes.
3. What is Karen Bakker’s attitude to using AI for animal study?
A.Positive.B.Uncaring.
C.Ambiguous.D.Disapproving.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.AI: A Potential Threat to Human Future
B.AI: The Cutting Edge Modern Science
C.AI: A Tool to Understand and Conserve Animals
D.AI: A Field of Fierce Major-country Competition

【推荐2】One night, Pilar was in a deep sleep when she was woken by her cat Inti. Inti was meowing wildly outside Pilar's bedroom and throwing himself against the closed bedroom door. When Pilar opened her eyes, she saw that her bedroom was filled with smoke. As she escaped her house with Inti in her arms, she saw that a fire was burning in her kitchen. Pilar could easily have lost her life, but Inti would not let that happen. Even though Inti could have escaped the house through a cat door, he wouldn't leave Pilar.

As amazing as this story is, it is not as uncommon as you may think. Take the example of Charlotte Lee and her horse,Thunder. One summer night, the whole family was asleep with the windows open. It was normally very quiet where they lived. Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Charlotte woke up from her sweet dream, and the noise continued. Then she heard a horse running fast towards the house. The next thing she saw was Thunder standing outside her window, neighing and shaking his head. She knew something was wrong. Charlotte quickly got everyone out of the house before the earthquake hit. Thunder has saved her life.

There are also stories of wild animals coming to the rescue of humans. One animal known to be a friend of humans is the dolphin. Once, Todd Endris was surfing with his friends when he was attacked by a 13-foot (4-metre) shark. In the middle of the attack, a group of dolphins came to his rescue by forming a protective ring around Endris until he could get safely to the shore. Without the help of the dolphins, there is little chance that Todd could have escaped.

No one is sure why animals have so often come to our rescue. However, it is clear that humans and animals enjoy a close relationship. It is important that we care for them as much as we can.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了昆虫数量日益减少的现象以及这个现象带来的危害并呼吁阻止这一现象。

【推荐3】Imagine a world without insects. It might sound good at first without creepy-crawly bugs and annoying flies in your apartment. However, the results would be harmful.

The number of insects has dropped by more than half in the past decades, according to British biologist Dave Goulson, author of Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse. As insects make up most of the known species on this planet, this data is not good news.

Insects are indeed on the path to dying out, according to the first global scientific review of insect population decrease, which was published in the journal Biological Conservation in January 2019. The researchers say intensive agriculture has been the main cause of the decrease. Pesticides(杀虫剂), in particular, destroy insect habitats. Urbanization and climate change are also significant reasons. “Unless we convert our ways of producing food, insects will go down the path of dying out in a few decades.”

What would happen to Earth without insects? It’s almost impossible to predict, but the soil healthy and much more. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat, and the predators(捕食者) of those animals would go hungry ns well. The ecosystem(生态系统)would be thrown off balance.

“If insect species losses cannot be stopped, this will have harmful effects for both the planet’s ecosystems and for the survival of mankind, said Sanchez-Bayo. once of the authors of the review. The first step to stop this process is “to build a society that values the natural world, both for what it does for us and for its own sake”, Sanchez-Bayo suggests. “The obvious place to start is with our children, encouraging environmental awareness from an early age.”

1. What is people’s general impression of insects?
A.Very interesting.B.Quite unpleasant.
C.Extremely helpful.D.Unexpectedly harmful.
2. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Drop.B.Change.C.Expand.D.Simplify.
3. Why are insects so important to Earth according to this article?
A.Insects keep the earth ecosystem.
B.Insects ensure the earth’s diversity.
C.Insects make the soil dry and healthy.
D.Insects help slow down climate change.
4. What can we do to stop insect species losses according to Sanchez-Bayo?
A.Use nature in a gentle way.
B.Produce less food for human beings.
C.Educate younger generation to know about it.
D.Provide insects with enough habitats and food.
