Databases are used to maintain a library of information in a well-organized, accessible format (格 式).They usually are not static (静态的),because changes are constantly being made as material is added, removed, and moved around. Over time, this can cause the database to start to go wrong. Database maintenance is used to keep the database clean and well-organized so that it will not lose functionality.
One important aspect of maintaining a database is simply backing up the data so that, if anything happens, there will be another copy available. Some database systems actually do this automatically and then send the backup to another location every day, every week, or within any other set period of time. Backups are usually not enough, however.
Database maintenance includes checking for signs of corruption in the database, looking for problem areas, and checking for any detail in the database that might signal a problem. The goal is to keep the database operating smoothly for users, so that ideally they never need to think about maintenance issues. A database that is not maintained can become slow, and people may start to experience problems when trying to access records.
The maintenance of databases is generally performed by people who are comfortable and familiar with the database system and the details of the particular database, although some maintenance tasks can be performed by people who do not have experience. Numerous textbooks are available with information about database management, including how to maintain databases properly. It is also possible to take courses to learn about different database systems and how to care for databases. People can also earn certifications in specific systems which indicate a high level of competence.

Once we were at Chicago's O'Hare airport. Dad was sitting with me as I waited for my flight to Fort Lauderdale. A Russian guy who sat down next to my dad could not speak a word of English but this did not stop my dad. He found out his business, how many children he had and of course how much he made.
I used to be a little embarrassed by this, but I changed later. It was in the last year of dad's life. As I was home visiting with my husband and twins and I was in the car with my mom, she told me a story about how she was in the doctor's office with dad and how he was his usual self-talking away to the others in the waiting room. She said he started talking to this young man in a wheel chair who could not talk, could not move his arms or head, really couldn't do anything. But dad was asking questions and got the young man to smile in response. And he carried on like that with the disabled man till he was called back to the doctor's office. When the young man and his father got up to see the doctor, the father of the young man came over and shook my dad's hands and said, "Thank you for speaking to my son. Most people just turn away when they see him.''
My father ended up dying later that month, a sudden heart attack. Fortunately, all the 9 children of his had been home that summer to visit. I told this story at his funeral(葬礼). Truly, my dad was one who never knew a stranger.

I remember an old photograph from a sports day in which my peers (同龄人) are all close to the finish line while I struggle at the halfway point.
By the time I was about 12 years old, I was using a wheelchair as my condition continued to worsen. Within an appointment with my doctor, he suggested cutting off my right leg. After hearing that, my heart immediately sank but the little cogs (轮齿) in my mind started moving. I had a foot that wasn’t working so why not just cut it off in order to get a new one.
I was wheeled down to surgery and after a quick injection, I was one sleep away from the start of my new life. I remember, the next day, I felt a rush of energy, as I was no longer in pain. I went privately in June 2017 and was fitted with a walking leg.
The doctor told me to be extremely careful with my walking leg. Despite this, I felt great: My mindset was changing and I started to see the world from a much taller level. No longer was I at the height of a child, I was walking and was going to be running as a young man. I started with 10-mile courses, initially (开始) walking most of the course until I could eventually run most of it. I completed events that I had never thought would be possible. The London Marathon, 36 Tough Mudder events, the World Judo Games … I was named British Judo’s Inclusion Player of the Year, and am now ranked top three in the world for judo.
I run because I couldn’t and I run for those that can’t. I run to show others that they are able to do things that they never thought would be possible and I run because I’m a runner.

Bill Masters almost single-handed built up our sales force in the Houston area and developed the market position that we enjoy today. In only six years, he has brought the firm from a very low fifth position in the area sales to the point where we now outsell all but one of our competitors. Not only have we got 37 per cent of the market under Bill's leadership; we are increasing our share with each passing month.
As you know, the company has moved Bill to northern California to work his sales magic in one of this company's most competitive(竞争的) areas. But we know that if anyone can do it, Bill Masters can, and I know you all join me in wishing him the best of luck in his new work.
