When my daughter. Rachel was 6 years old, we went to the local shelter, looking for a perfect cat. We liked all the cats we saw there, but we especially loved one that was black with a small white tip to her tail, like a bright star in the night sky. We brought her home and called her Starry.
Starry was lovely. At night when we watched TV, she would come into Rachel’s lap and comfortably stay there. Starry always got her face close to Rachel’s, ending her love with a gentle touch on Rachel’s nose. Sometimes I felt so jealous (忌妒的) of their love. Although I was the one who tank care of the cat, feeding and cleaning it, Starry was clearly Rachel’s cat. Finally, I came to love watching their close relationship
My little girl grew up and went to senior high school. Starry and Rachel were still close, though Rachel spent less and less time at home. starry spent most of her day sitting on the sideboard in the dining room, looking out of the window into the backyard. I loved seeing her as I passed by her, for her shiny black coat almost sparkled (闪烁) in the sunlight and the white tip of her tail looked bright against the shining black of her body.
One Sunday morning, early in November, Starry got out of, the room before we could stop her. When Rachel came home from school, she went into the room with a worried expression. “Where’s Starry?” she asked. When we told her we didn’t know, she led us outside with her. There was a black cat lying on the street.

When I was a kid in Pennsylvania, my family rehabilitated (康复治疗) wild animals. I grew up with raccoons (浣熊) and a fox running around the house. We would go travelling to Bermuda and I would watch the whales off the shore. I fell in love with them and wanted to know more about what they got up to underwater. Now I’ve been studying whales for more than 30 years and am the president of the Center for Cetacean Research and Conservation.
In 2017, I was on a boat around Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, working on a film about whale conservation. The crew wanted to get more footage (镜头) of me in the water with the humpback whales — I often slip in quietly to record their behaviour for research. Seeing a couple of humpbacks in the distance, I slid off the boat wearing a snorkel mask and a GoPro, and swam towards them.
As I was approaching, one of the male humpbacks came right up to me, nuzzling (用鼻爱抚) me with his head and pushing me through the water. I felt a rush of pleasure mixed with fear. I tried to keep calm, never taking my eyes off him. Then the whale swam underneath me and lifted me out of the water on his flipper (鳍). I signalled to the boat, then — swoosh — I was pushed back under.
After seven and a half minutes of being pushed around by the humpback, I saw what I thought was a second, smaller whale. But then I noticed the tail — whales move theirs up and down, and this one was moving side to side. I realized with horror that it belonged to a huge, 18ft tiger shark! Tiger sharks are known to attack people, sometimes fatally (致命的).

A brave dog fought off a coyote (丛林狼) twice her size to protect her 10-year-old owner after it attacked them. Owner Lily Kwan, 10, said she had just heard her neighbors in her Toronto, Canada community on Tuesday warning people of a coyote going after children in the area when the animal started biting at her heels while she was walking dog Macy.
In the video captured by a neighbor’s security camera, Lily can be seen running down the sidewalk with her six-year-old rescue dog while the coyote followed them so closely.
“I thought, ‘Am I next, what is going to happen to me?’” Lily told the local newspaper. “I was screaming for help but no one heard me,” said Lily. “I saw this coyote trying to attack my dog and I tried to ring people’s doorbells and knock on people’s doors. Luckily, this one neighbor let me in.”
But while Lucy made it to safety, Macy wouldn’t follow her inside. Instead the little dog turned around toward the coyote. After briefly screaming Macy’s name, Lily ran onto the neighbor’s second floor. Macy could be seen fighting with the coyote, before it caught her and bit her in its mouth and shook her violently. She cried in pain, but kept barking and bit the coyote back until it gave up and ran away finally.
“She’s a super brave dog,” Lily said “I love her so much, and I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote.”
Lily’s mother, Dorothy Kwan, said she was not surprised when hearing Macy’s action. “My dog would do anything for our family, so I’m actually not surprised that she did that,” Dorothy Kwan said.

Before the incident, Jeremy Sutcliffe had actually liked snakes. He’d found them beautiful, even. Besides, the 40-year-old wasn’t someone who kept away from wild creatures.
Jeremy was an adventurous outdoors man who took every chance he could to camp and fish. That love of nature was part of the reason Jeremy and his wife, Jennifer Sutcliffe, 43, had recently moved to South Texas from Kansas.
On a steamy Sunday morning in May 2018, the couple were tidying their yard in preparation for an evening cookout with their daughter.
At around 10: 30 a.m., Jeremy began mowing the lawn while Jennifer worked on the garden. She had just reached down to grab a weed when she saw it: a snake, right next to her hand.
Jennifer leaped up as the snake, a yard long, rose into striking position, its dusty triangular head tensed and its tail making scary sounds. "Snake! "yelled Jennifer as she backed away. "Snake! "
When he heard his wife’s cry, Jeremy figured she had run into the snake that often showed up on the property. He grabbed a shovel(铁铲) to frighten the creature away and jogged around the house to the garden.
That was when he heard the sounds. His wife was cornered between some bushes and the house, the snake directly in her path.

When I was in high school, like many other teenage boys, I played in a band. Most of our families came from South Africa, so, we mixed our favorite hard rock and heavy metal songs with elements of South African rhythms and melodies. Although our band didn’t achieve widespread success, we had a special night that I would never forget, when we realized the unique impact of music on lonely hearts.
At our school’s talent show, we weren’t the best, but we were good enough to come in third place, which made us more confident. Then, we decided to test the waters beyond our classmates. When we were booked for a charitable event at a large hospital, we were delighted. This opportunity was a thrilling breakthrough. Yet, beneath our excitement, we felt a sense of anxiety to perform for strangers-could our tunes really touch an audience unfamiliar with our sound?
For two weeks, we threw ourselves into intense practice sessions, meeting daily after school to practice hard and learn enough songs to fill a one-hour show.
On the concert day, we arrived early to check the stage. We felt nervous as we stood there and looked out at the hundred or so empty chairs lined up below us. After setting up and doing a quick sound check, we went backstage to have a soda and rest, doing anything to calm our nerves. While we were back there the hospital’s entertainment director came over to chat with us.
“Okay, boys, there are a couple of important details you should know,” she began. “Many in the audience today are suffering from severe physical and/or mental disabilities. Don’t be surprised by that. These patients have very few chances to see live entertainment of any kind, so they enjoy any kind of musical act that we can provide. Just go ahead and play your regular show, and you’ll do fine.” After saying that, she left, joining into the theatre to help the volunteers and staff who were assisting the patients to their seats.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Midde school is a tough time for almost everyone. Most kids are trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be. It took me some time to realize that I wanted to be kind more than I wanted to be popular.
I was talking to some friends while standing in line in the cafeteria at my middle school. As I started to share a funny story, my friend Elizabeth interrupted me. “Coco! Coco!” She called out. All my friends laughed. This was so strange, I thought.
Over the next week, every time I opened my mouth around Elizabeth, she interrupted me with that same word. Elizabeth was one of the girls that everyone wanted to be friends with. She always had the nicest clothes and told the funniest jokes. I felt lucky to be friends with her. I didn’t want to be left out, so I started using the word too. Elizabeth thought it was funny when I interrupted someone else’s story with our new code word. And since I wanted her to like me, I did it even more, even though I wasn’t sure what it meant.
One day after school, Sara, a classmate since primary school, stopped by my desk and asked, “Julia, do you know why Elizabeth started saying ‘Coco’ all the time?”
I shook my head.
Sara sighed. “It means she thinks you’re being annoying. A few days ago, she told us that you were bothering her when you told stories. She wanted a code word without you knowing she was talking about you. I know it’s really mean, and the rest of us shouldn’t have gone along with it. I’m really sorry.”

Pete Richards was the loneliest man in town on the day Jean Grace opened his door. Pete’s shop had come down to him from his grandfather. The little front window was set out with several old-fashioned things.
On one winter afternoon a child was standing there. With her forehead against the glass, she kept her eyes wide open and studied each thrown-out treasure, as if she were looking for something quite special. Finally, she straightened up with a satisfied air and entered the store.
“Sir,” she began, “would you please let me look at that string of blue beads (珠子) in the window?”
“They’re just perfect,” the child continued, completely to herself. “Will you wrap (包装) them up pretty for me, please?” Pete looked at her carefully and said, “Are you buying these for someone?” The girl replied, “They’re for my big sister. She takes care of me. You see, this will be the first Christmas since mother died. I’ve been looking for the most wonderful present for my sister.”
“How much money do you have?” asked Pete carefully. She untied the knots (结) in a handkerchief and poured out a handful of pennies on the counter. “I emptied my bank,” she explained simply. Pete Richards looked at her thoughtfully. He could see the price tag (标签), but the little girl couldn’t.
“Just a minute,” he said, and turned towards the back of the store. Over his shoulder he called, “What’s your name?” He was very busy about something.
“Jean Grace.” When Pete turned to where Jean Grace waited, a package lay in his hand, wrapped in fresh red paper, which looked very beautiful. “Here you are,” he said shortly. “Don’t lose it on the way home.” She smiled happily at him over her shoulder as she ran out of the door. Through the window he watched her go, while loneliness flooded his thoughts.
