I recently went SKYDIVING! It’s something I’ve been talking about doing since last year, but to be honest, it was planned super last minute… like within a matter of a few weeks.
It all started when I ran into a friend of mine walking home from a local festival earlier this summer. We started chatting about what we’d both been up to this summer and somehow got on the subject of both being interested in going skydiving someday. My friend, Denny, said he’d be onboard if I really wanted to schedule a jump and I was so excited to finally have someone to go with!
Later that night, we texted back and forth and decided on our jump date a few weeks in the future. When the very Sunday came, we were both FULL of excitement for our first skydiving experience. He had been bungee jumping before and I’d done my fair share of zip-lining, but neither of us figured that either of those of experiences would prepare us for what we had in store.
The drive there didn’t happen without a slight delay. As soon as we got off the through-way on to the exit towards the small town where the skydiving facility was, Denny’s car started to make a strange noise, forcing us to pull over on a busy interstate (州际公路).
Only 20 minutes away from WNY Skydiving (the place where we were going), we discovered we had a flat tyre (轮胎). At that point, I felt pretty defeated. Our scheduled time was 4 pm — the last appointment time of the day — so I figured they wouldn’t be able to wait for or delay the operations for us since we were racing against the light.

Every year, and more parents complain to their children’s schools about PE. They believe that their children shouldn’t have to participate in physical activity if they don’t want to. Supporters of PE, however, believe that it is a necessary element of all-round schooling and our society’s well-being. They insist PE in schools remains one of the few places by which the youth can be forced to participate in aerobic exercise.
Firstly, they believe that participation in sport promotes health. In fact physical education is a springboard for involvement in sport and physical activities throughout life. Government is, or should be, concerned with the health of its citizens. Encouraging physical activity in the young through compulsory PE fights child overweight and contributes to forming lifelong habits of exercise. This doesn’t have to be through traditional team sports; increasingly schools are able to offer exercise in the form of swimming, gymnastics, dance, etc.
Besides, physical education help to develop character and the mutual respect required to succeed in an adult environment. Playing team sports builds character and encourages students to work with others, as they would be expected to do in most business or sporting environments. Sport teaches children how to win and lose with good grace and builds a strong school spirit through competition with other institutions. It is often the experience of playing on a team together that builds the strongest friendships at school, which endure for years afterwards.
Finally, the pursuit for national sporting achievement begins in school. If schools don’t have compulsory PE, it is much harder to pick out, develop and equip athletes to represent the country on a wider stage. However, it’s much easier to find suitable individuals with a full sports program in every school.

A young man had bought an old house that was in bad shape, but he and his wife believed they could restore it. They immediately went to work. Their goal was to have the old building look best for New Year’s Eve get-together.
Just two days before New Year, however, a storm swept through the area, leaving a hole in the wall of the house. There was obviously no time to repair the damage before New Year. Then, the sad couple attended a local auction(拍卖)that afternoon. One of the items put up for bids was an old gold-and-ivory-colored tablecloth. Seized by an inspiration, the young man was the highest bidder at $ 6.50. His idea was to hang the cloth to cover the ragged hole.
On the day before New Year, it was snowy. As the young man unlocked the house door, he noticed an old woman standing at the bus stop. He knew the bus wouldn’t be there within at least half an hour, so he invited her inside to keep warm.
When the woman walked in and saw the tablecloth, she rushed at it and said excitedly, “It’s mine. It is my tablecloth.” She told the surprised man its history and even showed him her name in one comer of the tablecloth. She and her husband had once lived in Vienna, Austria, and their village was hit by a deadly disease. So they decided to flee to Switzerland, but her husband told her to leave first, saying he had something urgent to deal with. A few days later, it was reported that the bus her husband took fell off the cliff(悬崖)and he was never to be found. Her husband was believed to have died. Touched by her story, the young couple asked about her address, planning to send the tablecloth to her after New Year. As the bus came, she left.
In the candlelight of New Year’s Eve, the tablecloth looked even more beautiful. As the man’s friends left the house, they thanked the man for his arrangement and mentioned how beautiful the house looked.

A woman who had a stroke (中风) while on a Face Time video call with her sister, said the technology saved her life. Esmee Russell, head of the Stroke Association, said, “A stroke can happen to anyone, at any age, at any time. That’s why it’s so important that people know how to act fast: it could save a life.” Strokes happen when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off by a clot (凝块), or damaged by bleeding that causes brain cells in the affected area to die.
Opokua Kwapong, who lives alone in New York, was on a call with her sister, Adumea Sapong, in Manchester, when Mrs Sapong noticed that her elder sister “didn’t look right”. And she also noticed her sister’s voice was slurred (口齿不清). Ms Kwapong said she had not realised how serious the situation was.
The 58-year-old Kwapong had woken from an afternoon sleep when Mrs Sapong called her on Face Time. Ms Kwapong said “My sister looked at me and said she could see that my face didn’t look right. She also said that I was slurring my words, but I thought she was making a fuss (大惊小怪) and I didn’t believe her.”
Mrs Sapong said When I called Kwapong, she said that she'd not been feeling well and had been feeling tired and was also having some difficulty walking. I said, ‘Perhaps you need to take some medicine.’ She tried to pick up a glass of water and wasn’t able to. Then I noticed on the Face Time video call that her face was drooping. I told her she needed to hang up and immediately see a doctor. She thought I was making a fuss so I then called one of my other sisters, who is a doctor, and she could hear her speaking and could also tell that her speech was slurred. We both told her to call for help at once.”

65-year-old Mr. Fairfax had retired from teaching. He was very interested in adventure. This time he made an adventure on a low populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone. He struggled to move more than half an mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
Eyes fixed on the wonderful views, Mr. Fairfax stepped on the thin snow along the river. Suddenly, the snow collapsed (塌陷) and dropped him four feet to the bottom. Unfortunately, his left leg hurt badly. He lay on his side to reach for his shotgun, unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the river but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Mr. Fairfax told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of that river, he would get into a terrible situation.
Mr. Fairfax walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the river. He immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p.m., and it was nearing 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Mr. Fairfax focused on climbing to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, jumping was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.
