A piece of fossil sponge (海绵) that formed during the early Cambrian period was recently discovered in Changde, Hunan Province.

The     1     (discover) fossil sponge can date back to 540 million years ago. It ranges around 4 centimeters in     2     (high) and 3.5 centimeters in width. Paleontologist (古生物学家) Zou Hesi told the Global Times that the size is giant for a sponge from that period of time.

“Sponges become bigger and bigger over time; another fossil piece     3     (date) back to around 300 million years ago was also recently discovered in Ireland, for example. It was about 50 centimeters,” Zou told the Global Times. Found near the Cliffs of Moher, the piece     4     (name) as “Cyathophycus balori”. It is so far the largest known fossil sponge in the world.

5     4-centimeter Chinese piece was unearthed     6     (unexpected) during a field survey that local researchers were conducting in the Taoyuan District, Changde. The Guardian gave us the bad news that red and processed meat can shorten life. But The Daily Telegraph provided the good news that exchanging one portion (部分)of red meat a day     1    fish or nuts could cut the risk of early death by almost a fifth.

Both headlines     2    (put) forward by a major new study into diet and health     3    (outcome). Researchers looked at changes in diet for more than 50, 000 women and 27, 000 men in the US, over 16 years.

They found that those     4     had changed their diet to include more red meat     5    (be) around 10% more likely to die during the study. While reducing red meat alone did not result in lower risk of death, eating other food such as fish or nuts did     6    (slight) reduce the risk of death.

We still need to be     7    (care) about the findings. This study cannot tell us for sure that red meat or changes in red meat     8    (consume) are the direct cause of changes in length of life. But     9     results support existing healthy eating advice    10    (limit) red and processed meat, and to eat plenty of vegetables, fruit and other protein sources such as nuts and legumes (豆类).

Nowadays many people like making bread at home. Thousands of years before the coming of agriculture, people were already making bread. That’s the surprising     1     (conclude) of a new study based on a curious find in northeastern Jordan.

At its most basic, bread is the combination of     2     (process) grains and water that have been baked, fried or steamed. The process leaves behind chemical and structural qualities that researchers can use to identify the principal food. And that’s just     3     archaeologists found when they investigated a 14,000-year-old site known as Shubayqa 1 in Jordan’s Black Desert. The inhabitants, who     4     (be) hunter-gatherers, left their home     5     a hurry, with the contents of their most recent meal still smoldering (焖) in two sunken fireplaces.

With     6     help of a scanning electron microscope, which uses electrons to return incredibly complicated zoomed-in images, the researchers     7     (identify) 24 pieces of char (炭) that were decidedly breadlike. Though the bread’s exact grain remains unknown,     8     (it) structure resembles grain species.

The find is the     9     (old) example of bread yet discovered and predates (先于) the arrival of agriculture in the region by some 4,000 years. The discovery, which could help researchers better understand how ancient cultures met their nutritional needs, suggests knowing how     10     (grow) grains isn’t essential to making bread from them.

As you have noticed, you and a fish are different. Eyelids (眼睑), for example. Even sleep is a(n)    1    (different) between you and a fish.

As far as     2    (scientist) can tell, even though it’s hard     3    (study) the brains of fish, fish do sleep in a way. They at least rest at times, with a slowdown of their body “machinery”. And that is much like sleep.

For fish brains to relax, eyelids may not     4    (need). Some fish lie near the bottom or top of the sea or lake at night. Others hide themselves in the sand or produce a covering as protection against predators (捕食者) while     5    (they) defense (防御者) are sleeping. And sharks (鲨鱼)—even the kinds     6     continually swim—still have periods of rest in between periods of activity.

Fish don’t have eyelids     7     need them. Eyelids help us humans by keeping our eyes     8     getting dry, among other things. But dry eyes are     9    (possible) not a problem for animals     10    (live) in water. Maybe fish are jealous (嫉妒的) that we have eyelids are don’t.
