Some scientists found that the woman’s brain is mainly built for the ability to understand other people. But man’s brain is mainly to build systems.     1     For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that feature computers and sport.

You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at Cambridge University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile.    2     It has also been observed (that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people’s feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys which have clear functions.     3    People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male. Math and engineering, which require high levels of systems-thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men.     4     Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another.

Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender (性别) is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses.     5    It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and why they are there.

A.You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.
B.That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.
C.Generally speaking, there are clear differences.
D.It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.
E.They will consider many sources of information at the same time.
F.Their preference for building systems may change over time.
G.Others may think the theory creates a belief of what a particular type of person is like.

【推荐1】American English began in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, the English language was brought to North America by colonists (殖民者) from England. They used the language spoken in England, that is, Elizabethan English, the language used by Shakespeare.

In order to exploit (开发) new resources in America, British colonists settled down there and from 1607 to 1732 set up thirteen colonies. In these thirteen areas, English was a common language used by all people. They continued to speak as they had done in England.

As time went by, the English language gradually changed on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Foreigners longing for wealth set foot on the coastal area to trade. The Americans adopted many words from foreign languages and invented lots of new words to meet their commercial (贸易的) needs.

Following American Independence, famous people like Thomas Jefferson, the president, began to consider that the country should have a language of its own. Noah Webster compiled (编纂) three elementary books on English. Later, he expressed the idea that as an independent nation, America should have a system of its own in language as well as in government. After the second half of the 19th century, many great writers such as Mark Twain helped the development of American English.

English in America has developed a character of its own, showing the life and the physical and social environment of the American people. Since the rise of the United States to a position of world importance, American English has been developing and changing. There is no doubt that American English will enrich the English language greatly. With the rapid development of modern mass media and the common needs of economic, cultural and political exchanges, American English will be more widely used in the world than British English.

【推荐2】When my kids, ages 11 and 8, race through the back door after school, often the first thing out of their mouths is: “Mom! Can we play Prodigy?” After a quick thinking of how much screen time they’ve already had for the week and how much peace and quiet I need to finish my work, I accept. After all, Prodigy is a role-playing video game that encourages kids to practice math facts. It’s educational. Right?

Though video games are increasingly making their way into classrooms, scientists say the facts are lacking (缺乏) on whether they can actually improve learning.

Some of the first evidence (证据) that gaming may train the brain came from first-person shooter games. It was first found by C. Shawn Green, an undergraduate studying at the University of Rochester in New York. He gave his friends a test of visual (视觉的) attention, and their scores were amazing. He and his research adviser, Daphne Bavelier, thought there must have been a problem in the test. But when Bavelier took the test, her scores were normal. The difference was that Green’s friends had all been devoting more than 10 hours per week to Team Fortress Classic, a first-person shooter game.

In other studies, researchers found that gamers who trained on Tetris were better at moving two-dimensional (空间的) shapes than those who played a control game. Students who played two hours of All You Can E. T. improved their focus-shifting skills compared with students who played a word search game. Not surprisingly, the skills that games can improve are the ones that players end up practicing over and over during the course of play.

The next step is to figure out how these findings may translate to the classroom. Although this research is still developing, I’m sure about my own kids’ ever-increasing requests for screen time—especially when they beg to play games designed to help them master math.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To lead in the topic.
B.To explain what Prodigy is.
C.To introduce the author’s family.
D.To prove the importance of video games.
2. What does the underlined word “they” in the second paragraph refer to?
A.Video games.B.Classrooms.
C.Scientists.D.Facts.
3. Who did the best in the test of visual attention?
A.Mr. Green.B.Mrs. Bavelier.
C.Green’s friends.D.A graduate.
4. Why can those playing Tetris do well in turning two-dimensional shapes?
A.Tetris is only a control game.
B.They focus on shifting skills.
C.They practise the relative skills many times.
D.The skills needed are similar to those in word search games.

【推荐3】The neurotransmitter dopamine (多巴胺) is calling forth a lot of panic these days. According to books, articles and social media posts, our urge for a quick dopamine hit is why we desire cookies and spend too much time on Instagram. If we keep giving in to these desires, as the principle goes, we’ll never be able to stop ourselves.

Scientists who study dopamine say these concerns have been blown out of proportion. They “are not necessarily based on actual science of what we know about dopamine,” said Vijay Namboodiri, an assistant professor of neurology(神经学) at the University of California, San Francisco.

In the 1990s, scientists realized that dopamine is more closely related to the expectation of a reward than to its receipt. Dopamine causes the wanting of something and the motivation to go and get it, not the enjoyment of it. “What we think it maybe does is something like desire,” said Talia N. Lerner, an assistant professor of neuroscience at Northwestern University.

Some rewarding behaviors can cause problems in people’s lives. Activities like gambling and playing video games can lead to patterns of behavior similar to those seen in substance use disorder (SUD)— namely, continuing the activity despite severe negative consequences.

But that is the exception, not the rule. “For some people, yes, this is a problem,” Dr. Lerner said. “It’s not a problem for most people. We can function in the world and enjoy this reward-rich world.” As with most things related to health, the key is not going extreme. And while dopamine is involved in addiction, to say that it’s only dopamine is an oversimplification. In fact, experimental attempts to treat addiction by transforming dopamine activity in the brain haven’t worked.

“There’s not necessarily a healthy or unhealthy way to use dopamine,” Dr. Lerner said. “It’s just about learning. And you can always learn something good, you can always learn something bad.” Or, as Dr. Lerner put it, “dopamine is our friend, not just our enemy.”

1. Which of the following is closest to “blown out of proportion” in Paragraph 2?
A.Neglected.B.Overstated.C.Justified.D.Unfounded.
2. What is known about SUD?
A.It is a rewarding behavior.B.It leads to final enjoyment.
C.It means an addictive activity.D.It is a disease caused by abusing.
3. What is Dr. Lerner’s advice on treating dopamine?
A.Treating it in a reasonable way.B.Fighting against it like an enemy.
C.Changing its activity in the brain.D.Enjoying the rich reward it brings.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Dopamine, a receipt of joy.B.Dopamine, a severe addiction.
C.Dopamine, a desire for a reward.D.Dopamine, an over-concerned matter.
