Reasons Why Physical Education is Important in School

Are you looking for information about the importance of physical education in schools and why it should be emphasized? Do you want a healthy active lifestyle for your kids? Then this article can help you convince your kids that exercising and participation especially in school PE classes are important.

It's a link to good health.

1     It's only in physical education classrooms that students learn the value of taking care of themselves through proper healthy eating and regular exercise.

It's preventive measure against diseases.

2     Without any forms of diet management and control with the numerous processed foods students intake every day, a student's health can easily be at risk of many diseases. Physical education in schools is a preventive measure to teach students the value of regular exercise.

    3

Physical health allows students to function even better in classrooms. A good cardiovascular(心血管的) system developing from regular exercise promotes excellent blood and oxygen circulation. This means more nutrients circulate throughout the body which includes the brain. This circulation produces longer attention time during classes allowing longer concentration and better absorption.

It builds self-esteem

Students who are active in physical activities like basketball, volleyball and running are more confident with themselves according to most social school studies.     4     In school, the physical education program introduces these sport activities to students allowing them to make choices of which sport areas they want to get involved in.

    5

Most physical education programs are holistic. The program allows students to interact together to a common goal, that is, to win and excel physically. It not only brings out the competitive sides of students working with both body and mind but also promotes sportsmanship.

It promotes a physically active lifestyle.

The purpose of physical education is to instill(逐渐灌输) in students, at an early age, the value of self-preservation and choosing a lifestyle that is good for both the mind and body.

A.Physical education plays a vital role in students' development and growth.
B.It's a program for muscle strength and fitness.
C.It's probably because of the dedication made to a sport that brings out the best in students.
D.It develops cooperation, teamwork and sportsmanship.
E.The value of physical fitness cannot be overstated too much.
F.It promotes academic learning.
G.Many doctors today agree that obesity is a serious health risk.

【推荐1】Let’s Go Skiing

Skiing can be a good sport. Here is a list of advice for a new skier. It can also be used by would-be instructors to help you give a beginner the best possible skiing experience.

The biggest complaint of the complete beginner is cold feet. This is because the boots you are using don’t fit. Boots should allow you to shake your toes.     1     But, boots should not allow you to turn your foot side-to-side within the boot. If you can turn your foot inside the boot, you won’t have a chance to control your skis.

Try several pairs of boots — not every boot marked the same size is actually the same size (even if they are the same brand and model). This extra effort will be annoying, but worth it.

Probably fitting ski boots are warm. Do NOT wear very thick socks, or more than one pair of socks inside your boots.     2     Besides, socks can help here. Bring two pairs of socks for your first outing, a thin pair, and a medium-thick pair. Then choose the socks based on how the boots seem to be fitting. You may even find you wear a thin sock on one foot and a thicker sock on the other because the boots won’t match exactly.

Do NOT wear jeans or sweatpants. You will be falling down in snow and even if it is cold enough to be dry snow, some of it will stick to you and melt. If you get wet, it’s over. There’s no chance to stay warm. I suggest thick ski pants for beginners. The ski pants will also help keep you warm on the lift. Similarly, your jacket should also be waterproof. It doesn’t matter how heavy it is.     3

Keeping warm isn’t so hard. Make sure you read the parts on boots, socks and clothes above.     4     Remember to start out warm. When you go out into the cold, you should be a little too warm, not quite sweating but close. If your body is warm but your neck, nose or ears are cold, it is always because you left them uncovered.

5     If you are sweating a tiny bit, that’s fine. If you are sweating a lot, you are too hot. Your sweat will make parts of you very cold, even while other parts are still too hot. To deal with this, don’t be afraid of opening your coat, or removing your hat or gloves, for just a minute, or for the day.

A.Keeping warm can be difficult.
B.Getting too hot can be a problem too.
C.Wear heavy boots and socks together.
D.All the clothes you wear must be waterproof.
E.If you can’t shake your toes, then your feet will be cold.
F.If you didn’t rent your boots in advance, finding a good fit will be a problem.
G.Apart from this, you have to wear the right amount of clothing and keep moving.

2】        Is it okay to keep exercising when you have a cold? What about the flu? With winter viruses going around, it’s important to know how to alter your training if you do catch a germ or two.
“The guidelines are pretty easy,” says Dr Lorenzo Masci from the Alphington Sports Medicine Clinic. “Anything above the neck --- so if you’ve got a cold for example, a runny nose or a sore throat --- then you should probably cut down your exercise by half and do 50 percent of what you normally do.”

“If you’ve got anything below the neck, like muscle pain, joint pain or fever, you shouldn’t really exercise at all until those general symptoms settle down,” Lorenzo says. He points out that a cough would also fall into this more serious category. “For example, if anyone comes in with a fever and a runny nose, I’d tell them to stop exercising until the fever and the muscle ache settles. Then they can start their training again at 50 percent once all those symptoms settle, even if they’ve got a bit of a runny nose or a sore throat.”

“The reason we tell people to stop exercising is because if you exercise when you’re unwell it can make the illness worse and prolong it.” There is a second reason Lorenzo advises his patients to stop exercising when they have “below the neck” symptoms. In the event you have an illness which affects your heart, exercise can sometimes actually lead to death.
Lorenzo advises to take zinc (锌) and vitamin C as a way of preventing colds. But he admits that this is controversial --- some studies have shown that these supplements can improve immune function while other studies have cast doubt on the issue. The good news is that if you exercise regularly, you’re likely to improve your immune function. “If you exercise too much, it can predispose (使倾向于) you to coughs and sniffles,” he points out. This is often the case for excellent athletes who train every day, such as triathletes (铁人三项运动员). “But what we do know is that if you exercise at a moderate level, your immune system improves such that you’re probably at a lower risk of developing coughs and colds.”
1. How many guidelines does Dr Lorenzo mainly suggest on doing exercises when people catch a cold?

A.Worsening the illness.

4. What can be proved from the last paragraph?
A.Zinc and Vitamin C can help to prevent colds.
B.The more exercises we do, the stronger our immune function will be.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项研究,说明了参加体育活动与青少年幸福感的关系。

【推荐3】Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in various sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport.

Researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland.

All participants were required to answer questions on height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed(评估) using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, and the average well-being score for all participants was 17.

The researchers divided sports participation into low (0—3.5 hours a week), average (3.6— 10.5 hours), high (10.6— 17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, compared with participants in the average group. The researchers found that the highest well-being scores were gotten by participants who carried cut around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but exercising beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores.

Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been connected with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-respect in teenagers.

The researchers suggest that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about their well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can provide information for guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers.

1. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.To much sport is less healthy than what is traditionally believed.
B.Both low and high sports participation help teenagers improve confidence.
C.Very high activity groups tend to get higher well-being scores.
D.Low spirit participation is proved to be the cause of obesity.
3. Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A research paper.B.A health magazine.
C.A business report.D.A fitness diary.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Measures to improve teenagers’ well-being.
B.Concerns of physicians about teenagers' well-being.
