Researchers found that walking around with a forced smile and fake happiness simply leads to people feeling unhappier. So, putting a brave face on your sadness could be harmful. The research also found that women suffered more than men when pretending to be happy.

Dr. Brent Scott, who led the study, said employers should take note because forcing workers to smile when dealing with the public can result in bad outcomes. He said, “Smiling for the sake of smiling can lead to emotional tiredness, and that’s bad for the organization.” He also said the research showed customer-service workers who had “fake smiles” throughout the day didn’t want to work, so their productivity dropped.

The study is one of the first of its kind to examine emotional expressions over a period of time and compare the different effects on men and women. Dr. Scott’s team examined the effects of “surface acting”, or fake smiling, compared to “deep acting”, or making people smile by thinking of pleasant memories.

Dr. Scott said, “Women were harmed more by surface acting, meaning their moods worsened even more than men’s. However, they were helped more by deep acting, which means their moods improved more by thinking of pleasant memories.”

According to Dr. Scott women tend to suffer more when pretending to be happy because they are expected to be more emotionally expressive than men. Therefore, forcing a smile while feeling down is more likely to go against their normal behavior and cause more harmful feelings.

Although deep acting can improve moods a little in the short term, Dr. Scott says it’s not a long-term solution to feeling unhappy. There have been some suggestions that if you do this over a long period you start to feel unreal. You’re trying to develop positive emotions, but at the end of the day you may not feel like yourself any more.

【推荐1】In the past months, humans have become quite familiar with the term “social distancing”. But it turns out that we are not the only ones to avoid contacting our peers when our health may be at risk: Research suggests honeybees do it, too. “It’s exciting to see that other animals are doing something analogous”, said Dr. Alessandro Cini, co-author of the research at University College London.

Scientists have found that when a hive( 蜂箱)of honeybees is under threat from the mite (螨虫)called Varroa destructor, which can cause the collapse of honeybee colonies, the bees will respond by changing the way they interact with one another.

By examining videos recorded inside the hives, the researchers found that when hives had mites, foraging(觅食的)bees performed important dances to indicate the direction of food sources and kept themselves away from the centre of the colony where young bees and the queen stayed. This may help to keep the infection at a level that can be controlled, limiting the amount of damage. “Foragers are one of the main entrance routes for the mites,“ said Cini.

The team then carried out experiments in the laboratory, artificially infecting small groups of about 12 young bees with the mites and comparing them to uninfected groups. This time the team found no increase in social distancing among infected groups-which, says Cini, may reflect that it is more important for foragers and young bees to keep their distance when the mites are present and that bees rely on one another.

“Probably social distancing is too costly on a small scale,” he said. But there were differences in grooming(梳理)behaviour: Infected bees were groomed more, inspected more, and had food shared with them more than individuals in uninfected groups.

Cini said the study showed the power of natural selection in the evolution of social behavior and also dynamic change in the social behaviour to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

【推荐2】Tips for Staying Sharp

It’s not abnormal to feel out of it from time to time or perhaps you’re feeling a bit sluggish(迟钝的)when it comes to remembering things. If you’re worried about your forgetfulness, try out these five tips to stay sharp.

    1

You’ve probably heard the term “you are what you eat.” If you decide to eat sugary foods that are heavy with fats then expect to feel lazy and have no energy. But if you decide to eat fruits, vegetables and make other healthy eating decisions you’ll find that you’re full of energy.

Never stop learning

Challenge yourself constantly---whether it is puzzles, reading, cooking or other tasks that will keep your mind working. If your mind is always learning new things and active, you’ll realize that it’s much easier for you to learn new things and to function.    2

Stay fit

Being in good health and staying in shape is a big part of staying sharp.    3    If you choose to be lazy then your body is not going to give you the energy that requires remembering things and completing tasks. However, if you put forth the effort into being health then your body will expel(释放)the energy you need to achieve your goals.

Ensure enough sleep

Be sure to get the necessary amount of sleep that your body needs to function on a daily basis.    4    It also helps your body build up an energy reserve so you can improve your ability to focus and avoid distractions.

Socialize more

5     Social interaction will help you develop multitasking, problem solving and other skills that are necessary in life to keep your mind sharp.

A.Feed your brain
B.Avoid eating too much
C.Your body will only give you what you put into it
D.Lack of sleep contributes to tiredness and slow reaction
E.Conversations require individuals to stay aware and active
F.According to studies, sleep helps strengthen and recover your memories
G.Remember you brain is a muscle and if you want to get the most out of it, you must use it

【推荐3】Our love of music and appreciation of musical harmony (和声) is learnt and not based on natural ability, a new study by University of Melbourne researchers has found. The researchers said previous theories about how we appreciate music were based on the physical functions of sound, the ear itself and a born ability to hear harmony.
The study shows that musical harmony can be learnt, and it is a matter of training the brain to hear the sounds. So if you thought that the music of some foreign culture (or Jazz) sounded like the crying of cats, it’s simply because you haven’t learnt to listen by their rules.
The researchers used 66 volunteers with a range of (一系列的) musical training and tested their ability to hear combinations (组合) of notes (音符) to determine if they found the combinations familiar or pleasing. They found that people needed to be familiar with combinations of notes. If they couldn’t recognize the notes, they found the notes dissonant. This finding put an end to centuries of theories claiming (声称) that physical functions of the ear determine what we find attractive.
The study found that trained musicians were much more sensitive (敏感的) to unpleasant notes than non-musicians. When they couldn’t find the note, the musicians reported that the sounds were unpleasant, while non-musicians were much less sensitive. This shows the importance of training or nurturing (培养) the brain to like particular sound of combinations of notes, like those found in jazz or rock.
Depending on their training, a strange chord (和弦) sound was pleasant to some musicians, but very unpleasant to others. This showed us that even the ability to hear a musical note is learnt.
To confirm (证实) this finding, they trained 19 non-musicians to find the notes of a random (随机的) selection of western chords. Not only did the participants’ ability to hear notes improve rapidly; the chords they had learnt sounded more pleasant—regardless of (不论) how the chords were played.
The question of why some combinations of musical notes are heard as pleasant or unpleasant has long been debated. “ We have shown in this study that for music, beauty is in the brain of the beholder(观看者),” a researcher said.
1. According to the passage, why do people sometimes find foreign music quite unpleasant?
A.Because they don’t like the person playing the music.
B.Because they have no talent for music at all.
C.Because they have no idea about how to listen.
D.Because they hear music too often.
2. The underlined word “dissonant” in Paragraph 3 probably means ___________.
A.informalB.unpleasant
C.inspiringD.unfamiliar
3. Although non-musicians were less sensitive to music, they can still _______.
A.find the beauty of chords without training
B.enjoy the beauty of music when played by musicians
C.be trained to like particular music
D.make friends with real musicians
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Improve Your Brain By Listening to Music
B.You Can Be a Musician Without Being Trained
C.Music Can’t be Taught
D.Love of Music Is Not Natural But Nurture
