Learn Karate—self-defense and fitness
The university karate club was founded in 1962. All grades from beginners to advanced are welcome. The classes are suitable for both men and women and several women have obtained their black belt.
TUESDAY AND THURSDAY
6.00—8.00 p.m.
WEAVER HOUSE GYM
FIRST LESSON FREE
Hardly any of us have experienced real violence, but, over the last few years, attacks on innocent people have increased. Each of us has some ability to defend ourselves, and by learning a form of self-defence, we are not only increasing that ability, but also doing something to build our own sense of respect. Karate will show you a lot of simple and effective techniques to protect yourself, giving you increase self-confidence.
Far too many people think martial arts (武术) are about violence. Martial arts training is based on a lot of respect, self-discipline, self-control and non-violence. We learn basic etiquette, courtesy and tolerance. Good manners and consideration for others are expected at all times.
Karate is the practice of blocking and striking techniques for the purpose of self-defence, health and self-development. Karate exercises the entire body. Techniques are practised on both sides of the body, therefore muscle imbalances do not occur and the strength, coordination, flexibility and agility of both sides of the body are improved. Regular training in Karate improves the body’s physical endurance and flexibility. It also helps concentration and produces the mental calm and assurance that come from knowing we can defend ourselves.
Karate has many benefits but they do not come easily or overnight. Training requires ongoing commitment and hard work. Some of you will give up, but a few of you will get your black belt.

A 2014 study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that only 27 percent of graduates from four-year colleges were working in jobs connected to their college majors. North Carolina State University is trying to help students face the likelihood that their future jobs will not connect directly to their majors.
North Carolina State University Dean Jeff Braden shares a laugh with students after a class. This fall, the university is offering two days of workshops to help 30 juniors and seniors “design their lives.” School officials were inspired by a popular class at the Design School at Stanford University in California. The Stanford class helps students prepare for the future. Among other things, the Stanford professors say they provide “ideas for what the world needs more of.”
At North Carolina State, three college deans(院长) will teach the workshops. All offer expertise in different fields – Jeff Braden in humanities, Annette Ranft in business management, and Mark Hoverstein in design.
As to advice to students about where the jobs will be, Braden suggests looking toward work that cannot be done by machines or computers. He also suggests jobs that deal with questions that are a “little fuzzy”. Finding solutions to problems is not always clear, and there is more than one possible answer.
Ranft, the North Carolina State management dean, said students should also think beyond their first jobs after college. She hopes students will look toward “lifelong professional goals.” Unlike their grandparents, today’s college graduates are not likely to stay in a job for their entire lives, or even more than five years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median number of years that workers stay on a job was 4.2 years in January 2016. That was down from 4.6 years in 2014. “The days of someone working at the same job for his or her entire life are over,” Braden said.

When she arrived at college, she was excited to continue her interest in theater and join the drama club. However, Shannon soon discovered that Albertus Magnus College’s Drama Club was no longer functional.
This was a big disappointment for Shannon, who had always been surrounded by a theater community. Growing up, she did every show she possibly could, both in school and with community theater groups. Theater was more than just a hobby for Shannon—it was an important form of expressing herself.
Feeling the absence of the theater community, Shannon was inspired to restart the drama club. She wanted to bring back the spotlight (聚光灯) and create a space for students who shared her love of theater to come together and create something special.
Renewing a drama club that had been relatively inactive for years was not an easy task. Shannon received help from fellow students Giana Cagna and Kristian Lozada, in addition to English Professor Susan Cole. Together, the team shared emails and Zoom meetings to discuss the possibility of this effort and the next steps. By the beginning of Shannon’s second year at college, the club finally began to pick up.
Despite all their efforts, there was still a setback. They needed to recruit (招募) students. The group spread the word and put up posters around campus, but the result was not very promising. The students soon turned to their friends, and in doing so, they were finally able to fill a cast and crew (演员和工作人员).
Last month, the club successfully performed The Atomic Family from Outer Space—the club’s first performance in five years. The performance also received a Falcon Award for the best event on campus. It is safe to say we can expect big things from the drama club next year.

Mauritius
A ride through the waters of northwest Mauritius in Blue Safari’s 10-seater submarine gives children (aged nine months and up) the rare chance to explore beneath the surface to a depth of 35 meters. Everyone gets a window to the underwater world.
The Maldives
The Maldives is a good place to inspire young minds to dig deeper into the ocean. At Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, in the Baa Atoll north of Male, your teens can learn what is happening and why, and also help a scientist to create new reefs; back home, they can watch their reef flourish online.
Kerala
The rivers of the southern coastal state of Kerala are an ideal introduction to India for young imaginations. Setting sail on a houseboat, kids will find the village life along the waterways fascinating, and they can play a part in it on trips to local markets to pick up souvenirs (guided by houseboat staff).
Réunion
Covered in green, with plunging waterfalls and black-sand beaches, small Reunion is not a typical Indian Ocean island. Hike up to the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with over 600 miles of trails to occupy excited teenagers, or ‘aqua hike’ the Langevin River, which involves a mix of canyoning and whitewater swimming.

The black bear pulls one of the women by the leg with its paws(爪子),moving towards her across the path as she tries to remain completely still. The woman remains fearless as the animal isn't into her and continues walking up the path, giving the group an opportunity to make a swift exit.

【推荐2】It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.
"Any old papers, lady?" asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say "no" until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.
"Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa."
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, "Lady, are you rich?"
I looked at my shabby slipcovers. The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, "Your cups match your saucers." Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said "Thank you." They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job-these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

【推荐3】Like many young people, I dreamed of growing up and becoming a successful writer one day. My first part-time job came when I was 18 years old. I was working in a paint factory. Because of the terrible smell of paint, it became normal for me to temporarily pass out during my lunch time.
I discovered content mills, where a writer could devote his time to writing soul-destroying online copy. It provided a little pay, but I wouldn’t faint. So I quit my day job. But it is difficult to work from home. At times, I would lose all passion for writing 500 words about a bed for a few pounds, but the terrible smell of paint reminded me to get back to writing.
Several months later, the money got better. I was given consistent work writing for one of the largest entertainment websites in the world. The job was simple: I complained about everything that was wrong with society and they paid me£ 50 for each article. A guy from the website asked if would be interested in leaving my small town life to move to the big city of Manchester to become a professional writer for them. I accepted,
After a pretty successful year, I was offered a promotion. Just 18 months earlier, I was suffering from the smell of paint on a daily basis and now I was managing a team of nine writers. I had come a long way.
