WEAVER HOUSE GYM
FIRST LESSON FREE
Hardly any of us have experienced real violence, but, over the last few years, attacks on innocent people have increased. Each of us has some ability to defend ourselves, and by learning a form of self-defence, we are not only increasing that ability, but also doing something to build our own sense of respect. Karate will show you a lot of simple and effective techniques to protect yourself, giving you increase self-confidence.
Far too many people think martial arts (武术) are about violence. Martial arts training is based on a lot of respect, self-discipline, self-control and non-violence. We learn basic etiquette, courtesy and tolerance. Good manners and consideration for others are expected at all times.
Karate is the practice of blocking and striking techniques for the purpose of self-defence, health and self-development. Karate exercises the entire body. Techniques are practised on both sides of the body, therefore muscle imbalances do not occur and the strength, coordination, flexibility and agility of both sides of the body are improved. Regular training in Karate improves the body’s physical endurance and flexibility. It also helps concentration and produces the mental calm and assurance that come from knowing we can defend ourselves.
Karate has many benefits but they do not come easily or overnight. Training requires ongoing commitment and hard work. Some of you will give up, but a few of you will get your black belt.

The national event was held at a school in Lambeth. Lots of people gathered around a very big globe, the size of which shows the volume(体积)of carbon dioxide produced by a school bus every week. Similar events were held at schools throughout the country, making sure the message gets out all over Britain.
And it is not just about the climate-change-causing carbon dioxide. As for local air pollution, the school bus is one of the worst offenders. It’s those short, stop-start journeys which are the most polluting — giving out carbon dioxide and other compounds(化合物)that are linked to worsening air quality.
Contrary to what some might believe, staying in a car offers no protection from local pollution — in fact pollution found inside the car is about three times higher than that experienced by walkers. The organizers ask people to leave those keys by the door and walk to school — and judging by the number of schools involved(参与)this year it’s the schoolchildren that will be leading the way.
Andrew Fielding, one of Walk to School organizers, said, “We’re encouraging people around the country to use Walk to School week to try out walking with their kids. Walking to school isn’t just great for the environment, it’s great for you too — walking for those 30 minutes a day means real quality time together, and the average walk there and back will burn more calories(卡路里)than those burnt in the school’s PE. Give it a go and see how you find it, and we doubt if you’ll want to go back to the traffic jams afterwards!”
1. The Walk to School week mainly aims to ________.
A.let people take enough exercise to build up their body |
B.make people realize walking to school helps cut pollution |
C.encourage people around the country to try out walking with their kids |

C.they had to get rid of the large amount of carbon dioxide which was kept in the globe |
D.the globe made people learn about the amount of carbon dioxide produced by a school bus |
A.The organizers. | B.The parents. | C.The schoolchildren. | D.The teachers. |
A.people would rather go back to the traffic jams |
B.more and more people will enjoy walking to school |
C.the school’s PE may be replaced during Walk to School week |

One of Wales’s loveliest small towns has one of its loveliest small hotels and they even have an option for you to stay within the grounds of Abergavenny Castle. However, the Walnut Inn’s owners have another place you need to know about the award-winning Angel Hotel, a delightful place in the very heart of the town centre. Its location makes it the perfect place to stay.
We absolutely love it: it is an ideal mix of a lovely self-catering place with the stress-free ease of a hotel stay. And speaking of easing the stress, they’ll even lend you a car if you arrive by train: the hotel has a little electric vehicle called a ‘Twizy’, which guests can use during their stay.
Food and drink
The beautifully decorated Oak Room Restaurant provides a varied menu from breakfast in the morning to dinner in the evening. On the menu, guests will find dishes made with quality local produce. More informal dinner surroundings are available in the Foxhunter bar—full of comfortable leather sofas. It offers a range of beers and wines.
What to do
For walking, cycling and climbing, Abergavenny is a perfect base on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, where there are many things to do. Three towering mountains surround the town, all of which—including the dramatic Sugar Loaf—can be reached on foot. If you want to do all of them in a day, it’s easily done in the Angel’s ‘Twizy’ electric car.
Don’t miss
Abergavenny has plenty of interesting little shops and cafés, including a large Italian-Welsh deli, but the highlight is the covered market. It’s an interesting place to visit for a couple of hours.

Researchers from Leibniz University of Hannover in Germany are working to develop a man-made robot nervous system to teach robots how to feel pain, according to IEEE Spectrum. “Pain is a system that protects us,” said Johannes Kuchn, one of the researchers. “When we evade (规避) from the source (来源) of pain, it helps us not get hurt.”
Think about how many injuries you would receive if you couldn’t feel pain. Even though pain hurts, it helps us to avoid danger and treat our wounds. The same will be true for robots. As a greater number of people work closely with robots, the robots must act in a safer manner. Kuehn believes that by protecting robots from damage, they’ll be protecting people as well. Damage to robots—if left unseen—could lead to workplace accidents.
Rather than feel pain, some robots are designed to show pain or see it in others. Minoru Asada, an engineer at Osaka University in Japan, and his workmates have made sensors (传感器) that pick up many kinds of touch signals (信号). These touch and pain signals can turn into emotions (情感) and expressions on a robot’s face. Asada believes that these systems could finally lead to robots seeing the pain on human faces, an important skill for robots designed to care for elderly people, for example. Damasio said. “It’s for communication of the machine to a human.”
Damasio is quick to point out that this communication is an interesting development, but “it’s not the same thing” as a robot truly feeling and expressing emotions or pain. If one day, robots could actually feel as humans do, Damasio has a suggestion for the number one rule for robots: feel good.
1. Why was a robot nervous system developed?A.To help robots treat humans’ injuries gently. |
B.To reduce accidents when robots work. |
C.To teach robots how to find a source of danger. |
D.To allow robots lo react more quickly to instructions. |

1. Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.
It's one of the biggest bestsellers of all time. Napoleon Hill spent two decades analyzing over 500 successful men like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John D. Rockefeller to discover how they did it. The result of Hill's research is in Think & Grow Rich — 13 steps to achieve your goal, whatever it is. All other self-help books are just copies of Hill's book first published in 1937.
2. Psyclho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz.
It's another bestseller and the only self-help book you'll need next to Think & Crow Rich. Maxwell Maltz was a plastic surgeon who was amazed that some patients still felt ugly after surgery. That's when he discovered they also needed reconstruction work inside — their "self-image". Everything about how to use the "mind-body" connection to achieve your goals, and how to feel confident about your body is inside this book.
3. Talent is Overrated by Geoff Colvin.
This book drives the point home that success in any field is not determined by genes or talent but deliberate practice, Colvin uses examples from class achievers like Tiger Woods, Jack Welch, Warren Buffet, Mozart to prove that they all got theirs through years of practice—the 10,000 hours rule. You'll reexamine your beliefs about what it takes to succeed and supercharge your motivation after reading Colvin's book.
4. Mastery by George Leonard.
This book also stresses that practice is the secret of success in anything. Leonard explains that mastership never ends — you will never have perfect technique and be able to stop. Instead you'll keep learning, improving, and hitting plateaus. The big point in Mastery is that plateaus are vital for improving your skills and that you therefore must start enjoying them instead of getting impatient or quitting like most guys do.
1. For what purpose will a person read the book Think & Grow Rich as a reference?A.To make a research on being rich and famous. |
B.To draw a conclusion on the successful men's stories. |
C.To deliver a lecture on the instructions on how to succeed. |
D.To write a report on how to copy Hill's 13 steps to become famous. |
A.They are on the same bookshelf next to each other. |
B.They are bestsellers and the self-help books as well. |
C.They introduce about successful people and their secrets. |
D.They help readers to become successful by offering confidence. |
A.Talent is Overrated; Mastery. | B.Mastery; Psycho-Cybernetics. |
C.Think & Grow Rich; Psycho-Cybernetics. | D.Think & Grow Rich; Talent is Overrated. |
