It’s not easy to talk with teens about their relationship with screens.    1

Open with a discussion of young children’s tech use

Rather than asking teens to put down iPads, introduce a discussion on babies’ tech use.    2    When I had my eighth graders read an article about banning iPads for children under two, the class were interested.

Admit your tech problems

One of my students wrote that she would like to prevent the whole family from using tech facilities. Clearly, someone in her home was having some tech use problems.    3    We can’t tell kids to put down their devices if we continue to use them.

Keep a balanced opinion

We adults wouldn’t be able to live in today’s society without screens, so we shouldn’t expect teenagers to do so either.    4    It’s improved our lives in many ways. Before we start talking about its challenges, we need to realize its opportunities, too.

Deal with the topic like you would nutrition (营养)

If children weren’t making good food choices, we would never take their lunches away and make them stay hungry. We would teach them how to eat healthy and help them learn to set new habits:    5    Instead of taking their devices away, we should help them keep a balance with technology.

A.The same should go for technology.
B.Technology isn’t a bad habit to be got out of.
C.This will invite teens to talk about the subject.
D.Teens need face-to-face communication with adults.
E.One of teens’ fears is that we’ll take their devices away.
F.So we need to be open about our own tech habits as well.
G.Here are a few ways that will make the discussion easier and more productive.

【推荐1】Conflict is pretty much unavoidable when you work with others.

1     How you handle that conflict determines whether it works to the team’s advantage.

You can choose to ignore it, complain about it, blame someone for it, or try to deal with it through suggestions; or you can be direct, clarify what is going on, and attempt to reach a settlement through common techniques like negotiation or compromise (妥协).     2     It has to be dealt with constructively (积极地) and with a plan, otherwise it’s too easy to get pulled into the argument and create an even larger mess.

3     Healthy and constructive conflict is a part of high-functioning teams. Conflict arises from differences between people; the same differences that often make diverse teams more effective than those made up of people with similar experience. When people with varying viewpoints, experiences, skills, and opinions are tasked with a project or challenge, the combined effort can far surpass what any group of similar individual could achieve.     4

Understanding and appreciating the various viewpoints involved in conflict are key factors in its settlement.     5     The important thing is to keep a healthy balance of constructive difference of opinion, and avoid negative conflict that’s destructive (破坏性的).

Getting to, and keeping that balance requires well-developed team skills, particularly the ability to settle conflict when it does happens, and the ability to keep it healthy and avoid conflict in the day-to-day course of team working.

A.Conflict isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though.
B.These are key skills for all team members to develop.
C.You should look at conflict resolution first, then at preventing it.
D.The negative experiences will be replaced by positive ones.
E.It’s clear that conflict has to be dealt with, but the question is how.
F.People have different viewpoints and those differences may become conflict.
G.Team members must be open to these differences and not let them rise into serious arguments.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文尝试从Lisa Forbes的角度,通过其将“玩耍”整合到其课堂中对学生表现的促进作用,从而说明“玩耍”在高等教育中的重要作用。

【推荐2】While many educators in higher education believe play is a method that is only used for primary education, University of Colorado Denver counseling researcher Lisa Forbes argues that play is important in post-secondary education to improve student learning outcomes.

Throughout the spring 2020 semester, Forbes observed students who signed up for three of her courses between the ages of 23-43. To introduce the playful method, Forbes included games and play, not always tied to the content of that day's lesson, at the start of each class. She then provided many opportunities for role-play to practice negotiation skills, and designed competitions within class activities.

During the study, students mentioned they saw more opportunities for growth while learning in a highly interactive environment. Students also described that the hands-on nature of learning through play established a means for skill acquisition, and they were able to remember the content more effectively.

“As we grow older, we're conditioned to believe that play is childish and a waste of time,” said Forbes. “This social script about play leads to it being excluded from higher education. A more interactive learning approach leads to a deeper and more rigorous (严谨的) connection to the material.”

To maintain what Forbes described as “rigor” within higher education, the most common approach tends to be lecture-based learning. However, according to Forbes, this mode of education is quite the opposite to the very outcomes educators set out to achieve.

The results of the study suggest there is a unique and powerful classroom experience when play is valued and used in the learning process. According to Forbes, students who participated in this study also indicated that play increased positive emotions and connections with other students and the professor in the course.

Forbes suggests educators re-evaluate their understanding of using play in graduate courses. The playful method creates an interactive and warm learning environment, resulting in greater understanding of the material.

1. What's the purpose of Forbes' observation?
A.To analyze play's broad role in human life.
B.To explore college students' skill acquisition.
C.To prove play's importance in secondary education.
D.To assess play's impact on higher education learning.
2. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in paragraph 4?
A.It's the “same old song” that keeps play out.
B.Universities tend to “follow suit” and embrace play.
C.Educators “strike while the iron is hot” to introduce play.
D.Higher education “swims against the tide” by rejecting play.
3. How does Forbes view lecture-based learning in higher education?
A.It fails to meet its intended goals.
B.It's effective when applied rigorously.
C.It conflicts with her definition of “rigor”.
D.It's a top recommendation for most courses.
4. What does Forbes suggest educators do with the playful method?
A.Prioritize its use in class.
B.Reflect on its role in teaching.
C.Compare it with other methods.
D.Recommend it to their colleagues.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了探索新地方时避免迷路或兜圈子的三种方法。

【推荐3】It’s great fun to explore (探索) new places—it feels like an adventure, even when you know you’re not the first to have been there. But make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles.

●Do the map reading if you’re being driven somewhere. It’ll be easier if you keep turning the map so it follows the direction you’re traveling in. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn, or you’ll have to move to the back seat.

●Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You’ll need a good map, a compass (指南针), a raincoat, a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of spare cash for emergencies (应急现金). Tell someone where you’re going before you set out and let them know what time you expect to be back. The test is in not getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stick together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.

●See if your school or a club organizes orienteering activities, in which you need a map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B (and B to C, etc. ) in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. Either way, it’s not only good fun, but a great way to keep fit.

1. Sitting beside the driver, you should______.
A.direct the driver when necessary
B.look ahead to see where there’s a turn
C.move to the back seat if feeling uncomfortable

2. Why do you need to tell someone your exploration plan before setting out?
A.To get information when in danger.
B.To be saved in case of an accident.
C.To share the fun with him/her in exploration.
D.To tell him/her what’s going on with the group members.
3. Orienteering activities can______.
A.make people work fast
B.help people stay healthy
C.help people organize other activities
D.make people get prepared for sports
4. The text mainly talks about______.
