Thanks to this new hands- free suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage may soon become a thing of the past. Designed by Israeli company NUA Robotics, this “smart” suitcase can follow you everywhere you go.
The carryon suitcase, now a prototype(雏形), connects to a smartphone app via bluetooth. It has a builtin camera sensor that can “see” you and follow you around on flat floors. It comes with an antitheft alarm to prevent someone carrying it away when you’re not looking.“It can follow and carry things for people around while communicating with their smartphone, and avoiding bumping into other objects,” explained Alex Libman, founder of NUA Robotics.“We’re combining sensor network, computer vision, and robotics. So if you download our app(应用), press the ‘follow me’ button, the luggage recognizes its user and knows to follow and communicate.”
NUA is still testing the products and trying to improve features like speed and customization(客户订制), but they hope to make the suitcase available to customers in a year’s time. If it proves successful, they want to use the bluetooth pairing technology to automate(自动化操作)lots of other products, like shopping carts at the supermarket. These products are especially meant to be useful to the physically disabled and elderly.“Any object can be smart and robotic,” Libman told Mashable.“We want to bring robots into everyday life.”
The Israeli tech company made it clear that the finished product will look just like a common suitcase. They’re planning to partner with a carryon luggage maker, since the product that makes it “smart” weighs just 2.5 pounds and can be fitted on oldfashion luggage.
With NUA’s smart suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage isn’t a burden. But how their invention will handle tough blocks like stairs? It will be interesting to wait.

Eventually, the researchers hope it could lead to a more natural feeling of loved ones when he is wearing his prosthetic (义肢). With thermal electrodes( 热电极) placed on the skin of their remaining arm, amputees such as Fidati reported feeling hot or cold in their phantom(幻象) hand and fingers, as well as directly on the arm, according to the trials by the Swiss university EPFL.
The 59-year old Italian is among 27 amputees who took part in the trials, with 17 of them reporting a successful test. Those tested have also been able to differentiate between plastic, glass and copper, pointing to where they feel the feelings on images of a hand.
“By stimulating (刺激) specific parts of the remaining arm of the amputees, we could induce the sense of touch in the missing phantom hands,“ said Dr. Solaiman Shokur, a senior scientist at EPFL who co-led the study. “What they feel in this phantom hand is similar to what they feel on their undamaged hand.”
The technology, which has been tested for more than two years, does not need to be implanted. It can be worn on the skin and combined with a regular prosthetic.
Dr. Silvestro Micera, who co-led the study with Dr. Shokur, said they now wanted to test the device on a larger scale before combining it with other technologies to improve sense of touch in amputees. “We think that we could give people a better sense of embodiment of their hands and maybe even give them the possibility to feel their loved ones in a much more natural way,” Dr. Shokur added.

Today, our workplaces are equipped with assembly lines, fax machines, computers. Our daily life is cushioned by air conditioners, cell phones. Antibiotics helped created a long list of miracle drugs. The by-pass operation saved millions. The discovery of DNA has revolutionized the way scientists think about new therapies. Man finally stepped on the magical and mysterious Moon. With the rapid changes we have been experiencing, the anticipation for the future is higher than ever.
A revolutionary manufacturing process made it possible for anyone to own a car. Henry Ford is the man who put the world on wheels.
When it comes to singling out those who have made a difference in all our lives, you cannot overlook Henry Ford. A historian a century from now might well conclude that it was Henry Ford who most influenced all manufacturing everywhere, even to this day, by introducing a new way to make cars--one, strange to say, that originated in slaughter houses (屠宰场).
Back in the early 1900s, slaughter houses used what could have been called a “disassembly line.” That is, the carcass (尸体) of a pig was moved past various meat-cutters, each of whom cut off only a certain portion. Ford reversed this process to see if it would speed up production of a part of an automobile engine called a magneto. Rather than have each worker completely assemble a magneto, one of its elements was placed on a conveyer, and each worker, as it passed, added another component to it, the same one each time. Professor David Hounshell, of The University of Delaware, an expert on industrial development tells what happened: “The previous day, workers carrying out the entire process had averaged one magneto every 20 minutes. But on that day, on the line, the assembly team averaged one every 13 minutes and 10 seconds per person.”
Within a year, the time had been reduced to five minutes. In 1913, Ford went all the way. Hooked together by ropes, partially assembled vehicles were towed past workers who completed them one piece at a time. It wasn’t long before Ford was turning out several hundred thousand cars a year, a remarkable achievement then. And so efficient and economical was this new system that he cut the price of his cars in half, to $260, putting them within reach of all those who, up until that time, could not afford them. Soon, auto makers over the world copied him. In fact, he encouraged them to do so by writing a book about all of his innovations, entitled Today and Tomorrow. The Age of the Automobile had arrived. Today, aided by robots and other forms of automation, everything from toasters to perfumes is made on assembly lines.
Edsel Ford, Henry’s great-grandson, and a Ford vice president: “I think that my great-grandfather would just be amazed at how far technology has come.”
Many of today’s innovations come from Japan. Norman Bodek, who publishes books about manufacturing processes, finds this ironic. On a recent trip to Japan, he talked to two of the top officials of Toyota. “When I asked them where these secrets came from, where their ideas came from to manufacture in a totally different way, they laughed, and they said, ‘Well. We just read it in Henry Ford’s book from 1926: Today and Tomorrow.’”

Though the androids have proved useful at performing ordinary tasks, they are not ready for the greatest time. At least that appears to be the case at Japan’s Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff are being replaced by humans.
The first location of the unique hotel opened in July 2015 was at Nagasaki’s Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park. The hotel’s owner, Hideo Sawada, promised the hotel to be managed mainly by robots. Guests were greeted and checked-in by a dinosaur robot, while a cute android called Churi, placed inside each room, provided information about attractions. Not surprisingly, the lodging, recognized in 2016 as the world’s first robot-staffed hotel by Guinness World Records, drew in curious visitors from all around the world.
But as the years have passed, the hotel’s main draw is becoming less novel and more unsatisfactory. Also as the robots are “aging”, they are costing more to repair. Among the 283 androids being replaced are the chain’s two dinosaur receptionists. In addition to scaring young guests, they are also unable to photocopy guests’ passports, forcing human employees to step in each time. Also out are the cute Churi robots, which annoyed guests by interrupting their conversations. For example, one guest told The Wall Street Journal that Churi mistook his snoring for a command and kept asking him to repeat his request all night.
Sawada told The Wall Street Journal, “When you actually use robots you realize there are places where they aren’t needed—or just annoy people.” While Sawada may be cutting back on his use of androids, the recently-opened Smart LYZ Hotel and the Fly Zoo Hotel in China, are run entirely by robots, with not a human in sight. Whether the employees have more competence (能力) than those “hired” by the Henn-na Hotel chain remains to be seen.

Such heated conflicts, however, seldom settle disagreements and can lead to worse outcomes. A better approach to dealing with interpersonal (人际的)disagreements is to apply characteristics of wisdom, like intellectual humility (恰当的谦逊),diverse viewpoints, and open-mindedness. But applying these elements of wisdom can be difficult, especially during conflicts. The trick, according to a new research published in the journal Psychological Science, is to train yourself in advance to reason about interpersonal conflicts in a wiser manner.
“People typically fail to reason wisely when facing social conflicts, so we designed a way to help them,“ said Igor Grossmann, director of the Wisdom and Culture Lab at the University of Waterloo, Canada. " Our basic idea was to train people to see situations from a more objective, third-person angle. This approach enables people to recognize the limits to their knowledge, acknowledge different ways the conflict may lead to, and consider and balance multiple viewpoints."
According to the researchers, by switching the angle from the first person to the third person, a person becomes better able to evaluate their own knowledge and appreciate alternative views.
To test their hypothesis (假设),the researchers conducted two field experiments. Grossmann said, “Our research showed effectiveness of the third-person diary writing for a change in wisdom compared to the first-person diary reflections, and that the distanced — self — reflection led to gradual development in wise reasoning about personally challenging incidents." The data suggest that this increase in wise reasoning occurred because the distanced — self — reflection broadened people's typically narrow self-focus. This research provides the first empirical (实验的)evidence for the trainability of wisdom in daily life when working through challenges.
1. Why is it significant to settle the social conflicts?A.Because conflicts can result in a worse relationship. |

An air fryer can be used to get the crispness (松脆度) of deep-fried food without actually deep frying the food in oil. Breaded foods are among the most popular dishes in America. Instead of placing something like breaded chicken into oil; the air fryer blows hot air around the chicken and causes it to crisp up and brown, creating a crunchy texture (松脆的口感) that is similar to fried chicken.
Nutritionist Bellatti said, “When you are just using a teaspoon of oil in an air fryer, it’s going to be a lot less caloric (卡路里的) than something in a real fryer where a lot more oil is being taken in. It’s a way to lower your calorie intake greatly. Additionally, for those who are watching fat intake for medical reasons, air fryers can help them create fried foods that are lower in total fat content.”
Reducing fat and calorie intake can help a person lose weight and eat healthier when compared to eating fried foods. But some experts say there is no guarantee (保证) that air frying is a healthier way to cook.
If you’re turning to an air fryer every day to cook every meal, you’re not necessarily eating healthier, according to nutritionist Hartley. Air frying makes some dishes healthier, but it doesn’t add nutritional value. Similarly, it doesn’t make an unhealthy dish a smart choice. At the end of the day, air-fried breaded chicken is still breaded chicken —grilled (烤的) chicken would be the healthier choice.
“Air frying is just an easy and low mess way to cook dishes that have the satisfying crispness of fried foods,” Hartley said. “Instead of thinking of them as a dieting tool, think of them as a tool for cooking simple and satisfying meals.” Hartley also added air fryers would probably not help you lose weight, saying there was “zero research” to back that up.
And cutting oil out of your diet completely isn’t always for the best. “Although a low-fat, air-fried diet sounds attractive, you’d end up missing out on the wonderful advantages of plant-based fats such as avocado oil and olive oil,” said nutritionist Cucuzza.

And rates are increasing in many other countries. Obesity is increasing faster in children than adults in many nations, including Algeria, Turkey and Jordan, the report said. But the world's weight problem is growing in both rich and poor countries alike. Researchers say an increasing number of people are dying of related health problems in what they called a "disturbing global public health problem."
Researchers studied health information from 1980 through 2015. They examined obesity rates, average weight gain in 195 countries. They found that obesity rates are three times greater among youth and young adults in countries like China, Brazil and India. Almost 108 million children and more than 600 million adults were found to be overweight. Egypt had the highest number of overweight adults in 2015. Vietnam had the least. In the same year, the United States had the highest number of overweight children, and Bangladesh had the least.
Yet hunger remains a problem in many areas. The United Nations said that almost 800 million people, including 300 million children, go to bed hungry each night. Experts said poor diets and lack of physical activity are mainly to blame for the rising numbers of overweight people.
Growing populations have led to rising obesity rates in poor countries. Often, poor people will eat processed(加工的) foods instead of choosing a diet rich in vegetables.
The London-based Overseas Development Institute studied the price of food in five countries: Britain, Brazil, China, Mexico and South Korea. It found that the cost of processed foods like ice cream and hamburgers has fallen since 1990. But the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables has gone up.

Princeton physicist and carbon dioxide-advocate William Happer has been selected to head the brand new Presidential Committee on Climate Security. The atomic scientist, who achieved recognition for his work on atomic collisions (原子碰撞), not climate science, declared that the planet’s atmosphere needs significantly more CO2, which is reported to speed up climate change. Happer said plants use CO2 to live and more CO2 is actually a benefit to the Earth. He also stressed that Earth is experiencing a “CO2 starvation”, and concludes that “If plants could vote, they would vote for coal.”
Earth and plant scientists, however, find Happer’s insistence that the plant kingdom would benefit from increased CO2 wrong-headed and it lacks evidence. For example, Earth’s CO2 levels have increased sharply in the last century, and are now at their highest levels in at least 800,000 years—though other measurements show CO2 levels are higher than they’ve been in 15 million years. “The idea that increased CO2 is universally beneficial ‘to plants’ is very misguided,” Jill Anderson, an evolutionary ecologist specializing in plant populations, said in an interview. Data shows the evolution of global average temperature and CO2 concentration from 1850 to 2019. Though 2019 is a bit cooler than recent years, it still is one of the warmest years ever and lies close to the trend line of global warming.
Both independent academic organizations and government agencies around different parts of the world concluded more CO2 will bring many negative impacts to plant environments. And they added that “If someone is going to claim it is good, it’s necessary for them to show evidence.”

My father died when I was nine, and I remember doing the household chores to help my mother. I hated changing the vacuum cleaner bag and picking up things the machine did not suck up.
Thirty years later, in 1979, I was doing chores at home alongside my wife. One day the vacuum cleaner was screaming away, and I had to empty the bag because I could not find a replacement for it. With this lifelong hatred of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless vacuum cleaner.
Easier said than done, of course. I didn’t realize that I would spent the next 15 years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (设计原型). By the time I made my 15th prototype, my third child was born. By 2,627, my wife and I were really counting our pennies. By 3,727, my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.
I just had a passion for the vacuum cleaner as a product, but I never thought of going into a business with it. In the early 1980s, I started trying to get licensing agreements (许可协议) for my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (过滤器). No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business.
That gave me the courage to keep going, but soon after, the companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine. I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents (专利) on my vacuum cleaner. However, I was still in financial difficulties until 1993, when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production. Within two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.
Today, I still view risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. Nothing beats the excitement of invention. Go out and brainstorm your ideas. You are not limited by any rules — in fact, the stranger and riskier your idea, the better.
