With a focus now on the environmental influence over the fashion industry, some bloggers who cut their teeth sharing details of endless clothes and products are changing their direction-enter the “no-buy” movement. The idea is simple: instead of buying new clothes or beauty products, you make a promise to use the things you already own. Some people sign up to a “no-buy year”. Others decide not to buy for a few weeks or months or choose “low-buy” with a strict spending cap.
This life style has caught the attention of many people who struggle to keep up with the latest fashion. Modern people’s desire for material things is often not caused by poverty (贫穷) , but by anxiety, which is further enlarged by the rise of social media.
“Social media puts pressure on people to spend money,” says Katherine Ormerod, author of Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life. Many online influencers are given the items they use and wear for free, but Ormerod is determined not to wear any new products she is given. “Really I just want to convince people they don’t have to spend a lot of money on fashion to look stylish and there’s no such thing as ‘last season’ anymore,” she says. “True style has never been about that anyway.”
However, self-satisfied expressions of minimalist (极简主义的) living have earned plenty of doubts. “Minimalism is a good quality only when it’s a choice, and it’s telling that its fan base is from the well-off middle class. To people who don’t have enough in the first place, celebrations of ‘less is more’ can sound more like a luxury (奢侈) than a considerable loss.” Stephanie Land wrote in The New York Times.

Julie Ohana, a social worker, offers what she calls culinary therapy to her patients in New York City to help them overcome many kinds of issues.
Baking requires mindfulness.
When you’re in the kitchen, it really requires a certain level of mindfulness, of being present in the moment. And baking really requires step-by-step, following a recipe, being more precise. Kneading the dough (揉面团) or rolling something out, you really get the full benefit of being present in the moment and being able to relax and put aside all the other thoughts and just focus on the here-and-now.
Baking is a labor of love.
Baking is a process filled with love.

In an ideal world, a child can step outside and enjoy whatever environment he or she encounters. However, many only encounter car-filled streets. Playing Out wants this to change, and its directors invited environmental writer and activist George Monbiot to have a public conversation about how to cope with such a challenge. What follows are some thoughts on the highlights of the conversation,
First, we mustn't underestimate the positive influence of community on a child's wellbeing. It's an essential human need to feel a sense of belonging in a physical space. Monbiot says he gets this sense from his garden, where being in an outdoor physical location connects him with people from all over the community, who are sharing that space.
The greatest threat to modern children's outdoor play is the presence of cars. Monbiot describes neighborhoods where there's minimal traffic. The lines linking houses are closely connected. Compare that to neighborhoods where busy streets bisect (平分) neighborhoods and there's hardly any interaction between households. The busy traffic literally cuts through the threads, and destroys the society's fabric.
This is unfair because children have the right to use land and space as well. But their opinions are ignored when land is being developed. According to Monbiot, children should be allowed to weigh in on how they want neighborhoods to look. He said, "Children have fantastically creative solutions to problems adults can't solve."
Whether it's streets, parks, rivers, or public squares, children need to get out there and fill those spaces with their games, voices and laughter. Not only will it make them healthier, but it'll teach them to be better citizens, knowing how to interact with others and the natural world.

Brain, 58, was treated in intensive care for a severe case. As soon as his condition had stabilized, he was sent home with equipment including a phone and a blood pressure monitor.
“Every day I would input my vital signs on the app,” Brain said. “If anything went wrong or wasn’t right, a nurse would call me straight away.”
Brain spent six weeks on this “virtual ward (病房)”, run by his local NHS hospital in partnership with Doccla, a healthcare technology company. He is one of thousands of patients to have been treated in new “hospitals at home”, seen by NHS leaders as a “lifeline” for overwhelmed hospitals that have run out of beds. 2,500 virtual ward beds were already in use, ensuring that people could “get the care they need from their own homes”.
Retz, founder of Docile, said soon there could be “regional command centers”, where a doctor or nurse monitored data from hundreds of patients displayed on a dashboard. “It works in a similar way to traditional ward rounds in a hospital, with patients submitting data once or twice a day, which is reviewed by a doctor,” he said.
Noel O’Kelly, clinical director at Spirit Health, said, “Older people want to spend as little time in hospital as possible and avoid hospital visits, particularly as frequent visits and long periods of time spent in hospital can be damaging to the health of older patients. We have already seen very encouraging results from the use of virtual wards for older patients.”
Virtual wards allow real potential to support people to recover well in the community. The model is not a silver bullet and health leaders are mindful that it should not worsen health inequalities, but it could present a vital lifeline for the system.
1. How was Brain treated after his condition stabilized?2. What do “regional command centers” and traditional ward rounds have in common?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
> Older patients want to spend as little time in hospital as possible because medical resources in hospitals are limited.
4. Besides what’s mentioned in the passage, what other benefit(s) do you think virtual hospitals may have? (In about 40 words)

London
Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is a perfectly formed firework that knows how to present itself with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns, previous years have seen shows with acrobatics(杂技), martial arts, dances and operas nearby.
San Francisco
San Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the USA. The city was the main entry-point for the Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between Grant Avenue and Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bangkok
With an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty food, clothes and toys. Sunday Market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also famous for its gold dealers, and there are lots of gold shops along the road.
Port Louis
Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Built in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the dragon dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional dragon dances through the streets.

The experiment was carried out by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT). The team developed a machine learning system for self-driving vehicles that is designed to learn the social characteristics of other drivers. The researchers studied driving situations to learn how other drivers on the road were likely to behave. Since not all human drivers act the same way, the data was meant to teach the driverless car to avoid dangerous situations.
The researchers say the technology uses tools borrowed from the field of social psychology. In this experiment, scientists created a system that attempted to decide whether a person's driving style is more selfish or selfless. In road tests, self-driving vehicles equipped with the system improved their ability to predict what other drivers would do by up to 25 percent.
In one test, the self-driving car was observed making a left-hand turn. The study found the system could cause the vehicle to wait before making the turn if it predicted the oncoming drivers acted selfishly and might be unsafe. But when oncoming vehicles were judged to be selfless, the self-driving car could make the turn without delay because it saw less risk of unsafe behavior.
The MIT team plans to expand its research model to include other things that a self-driving vehicle might need to deal with. These include predictions about people walking around traffic, as well as bicycles and other things found in driving environments. The researchers say they believe the technology could also be used in vehicles with human drivers. It could act as a warning system against other drivers judged to be behaving aggressively.
