When you think of a national park, you generally picture fresh air and wild animals, right? Well, now you're going to have to add tea shops and something called "the Tube" to your definition, because London, England has signed up to be the first "National Park City."
London was established by the Romans around 2,000 years ago and has been continually inhabited (居住于) since then. In all that time, however, nobody had the idea to replace all the parks with big box stores or high buildings, which means London already has a much lower urban density (密度)than most of the worlds cities. Nowadays about a third of the city is green space,
In July 2019, London announced its willingness to become the world’s first National Park City. Now the city is moving toward the goal of achieving 50% green space by the year 2050 by connecting and expanding public parks, greening up unused parking lots and the private yards of existing and new houses, fixing some green roofs on existing buildings and even cutting holes in fences for wildlife to pass through.
"Inspired by the aims and values of our precious rural national parks, the London National Park City is basically about making life better in the capital through both small everyday things and long-term strategic thinking," Daniel Raven-Ellison, who began the campaign to make London a National Park City six years ago said in a press release. "We've been doing that in London for centuries, which is why London is so green and diverse. "
London will have a much easier job achieving this type of green transformation than more densely-urbanized cities like Paris and New York, which have 10% and 27% greenspace, respectively. But that doesn't mean it's not possible——the National Park City Foundation hopes to employ 25 more cities in addition to London by the year 2025. Glasgow, Scotland and Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England are both currently considering becoming National Park Cities.

The child went missing on January 22, 2019 while playing with friends at his grandmother’s house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned to the house and Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police. The police organized a search team to search the nearby forest for the little boy. But two days went by and Casey was still not found.
Then on January 24, someone called the police saying he heard a child crying in the forest. The police followed up the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. They pulled him out of some briar (荆棘). He was in good health.
Casey told the police that he had hung out with a black bear for two days, a bear he called his “friend.” The police told reporters that Casey did not say how he was able to survive (活下来,幸存) in the forest for two days in the cold, rainy weather. However, the police said, “He did say he had a friend in the forest that was a bear that was with him.”
Hundreds of people helped in the search, including some 600 volunteers, policemen and soldiers. An officer told reporters that at no point did he think Casey had been kidnapped (绑架). Casey’s mother Brittany Hathaway told reporters she thanked everyone who joined the search for her son. “We just want to tell everybody that we really thank you for taking the time out to come to search for Casey,” said his mother.

The creature is known as the Kashmir musk deer, and it is native to the Himalayas of northern India, Pakistan’s Kashmir region and northern Afghanistan.
Only the male deer have sharp teeth, and they use them during mating season to compete for females. A team of researchers searched Afghanistan’s Nuristan province during 2008 and 2009, and recorded five sightings of the animal. This was the first time the species had been spotted since 1948. During the survey, the researchers spotted a single male Kashmir musk deer near the same area three separate times. The researchers also recorded one female and her baby, and saw a second single female that they think may have been the same deer, without her baby. These musk deer are classified as an endangered species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. Musk-deer meat is a local delicacy, but the species is mostly hunted for its scent glands(香腺) that are more valuable by weight than gold---some believe the glands have pharmaceutical (药学的) properties, and they sell for nearly $20,455 per pound ($45,000 per kilogram) on the black market, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Three decades of war have ravaged Nuristan province, and the continued violence and political instability make the black-market trade of scent glands uncontrollable. Furthermore, the species is quickly losing suitable habitat. All of the musk deer were spotted on sheltered rocky outcrops around 9,843 feet (3,000 meters) high. In the summer, they regularly trek (跋涉) along steep slopes that make them almost impossible to approach and keep them relatively safe from hunters. However, heavy snowfall in the winter drives the species farther down, to more human-accessible slopes, and hunters come from all over the country to track the deer for their valuable scent glands.
Due to violence and unrest, nongovernmental organizations like the Wildlife Conservation Society have not been able to operate in the Nuristan province since 2010. The WCS maintains contact with locals they have trained to survey and search for the musk deer. Once the situation in Nuristan improves, the WCS intends to return to the area to continue research and to formulate a conservation plan.

5G short for the 5th generation mobile communication technology, promises Internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than current 4G systems. While 5G is set to be used in some limited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected to receive widely available service until 2023.
One project in Britain, however, is already testing this super fast technology on an unlikely group of Internet users—cows. The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems. It also receives money from the British government. Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G connectivity in rural areas around the world.
Testing areas were set up at farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices (装置) that link up to a robotic milking system, which uses sensors (传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process. System designers say technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each individual cow. It then positions equipment to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines release food for the cow as a reward.
Other 5G technology tools include automated brushes that turn on when the cow rubs up against them. Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows’ living areas depending on the weather. And an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always get enough to eat.
Duncan Forbes, head of the project, told Reuters that the project shows the farm’s cow operations can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not just on farms in Britain, but in rural communities across the world.
1. What is the purpose of Cisco Systems’ program?A.To win financial support from British government. |
B.To test the effects of 5G technology on animals. |
C.To promote its technological development in Britain. |
D.To expand the future use of 5G in rural communities. |
A.The company. | B.The project. | C.The technology. | D.The group. |

But what if that predator is so quick that the beetle doesn’t have time to make its defense before it gets eaten? Turns out, the explosion is also effective when exploded from the inside. A new study shows that the beetles can use their chemical weapons to escape from the belly of the toad (蟾蜍) that ate them. They accomplish this Jonah-like feat by using their chemicals to encourage the toads to vomit (呕吐) them back up. The finding is served up in the journal Biology Letters.
Researchers collected 37 beetles and 37 toads from a forest in Central Japan. Some of the toads, those of the species Japonicas, share their habitat with the bombardier beetles. Others, the Torrenticola, inhabit the nearby streams and don’t normally encounter these beetles.
Back in the lab, the researchers paired off their collected specimens and each toad was allowed to swallow a single beetle. And then came the fireworks. As the authors note in their paper: “an explosion was audible inside each toad”, which means that somewhere in the belly, the beetles dropped their bombs.
What happened next depended on the participants. About 35 percent of the Japonicas toads, vomited the beetles. While 58 percent of the Torrenticola toads gave the researchers valuable feedback, literally— they vomited, too.
As for the beetles, the larger ones were more likely to make it back out. The lucky ones escaped in under 15 minutes. And those less fortunate were in there up to an hour and a half. And all 16 vomited beetles returned alive and were able to walk away. Fifteen of them were still kicking two weeks later. And one survived to tell his tale for another a year and a half.
1. How do beetles escape from the predators when eaten?A.They release boiling hot toxic chemicals. | B.They bite the belly of the predators. |

A recent paper by Amado Gonzalez and Brian Bauer concludes that the Incas who built the city in the clouds actually called it Huayna Picchu — or simply just Picchu — the name of a mountain overlooking the ruins.
When Hiram Bingham first discovered the place in 1911 and asked what it was called, the report found, he was initially told it was known as Huayna Picchu. But days later, he was told by a different guide that the site was called Machu Picchu. It appears that’s the name that stuck.
“It’s true that at the time it was not so well-known to people, but there is a lot of evidence suggesting that those who did know it did not call it Machu Picchu,” said Amado Gonzalez. “Even more importantly, the research is based on centuries of documents, including some of the region’s first maps, land records, and even Bingham’s own notes and letters. An official record dating back to 1539 refers to the area as Picchu. Another, dated 1568, specifically mentions a city of the same name. We also have a clear reference to the ancient Inca town of Huayna Picchu’ from a 1715 document.”
But that doesn’t mean that there are any plans in the report to change the name of one of South America’s most popular tourist destinations. More than 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, the UNESCO World Heritage site has drawn about 1 million visitors every year.
“It may not have been Machu Picchu to the Incas but now it’s Machu Picchu to the world,” Amado Gonzalez said.

As you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents may have a difficult time adjusting (调整). They aren’t used to the new you — they only know you as a child.
In most families, this adjustment can cause lots of arguments between teens and parents. You want to cover your walls with posters, but your parents don’t understand why you don’t like your wallpaper any more. Then you feel your parents don’t respect you and don’t allow you to do what you like, and your parents get angry because they disagree with your decisions. And some other things — like the type of friends you have — can cause even bigger arguments, because your parents will always be ready to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.
However, the good news is that there will be fewer arguments as your parents realize that you have grown up and should have your own ideas. Before you get on well with each other again, communication between you and your parents is very important.

She had requested the community to turn it into a museum upon her death. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum. She asked, "Do you have the address? ""No, but I'll recognize it, there was a picture in the magazine. "
"Oh, stop. There it is!"
The museum was free. We entered, excited. A group of people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us.
"May I help you?" a man asked. "No," I said. "We're fine." Tour guides got on my nerves. What if they talked a long time about a painting you weren't that interested in? Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very nosy(爱窥探的), keeping their eyes on me with curiosity. What was their problem? I saw some nice sculptures in one room. Suddenly I sensed a man standing behind me. "Where do you think you are?" he asked. I turned sharply. "The McNay Art Museum!" He smiled, shaking his head. "Sorry, the McNay is on New Braunfels Street." "What's this place?" I asked, still confused. "Well, it's our home." My heart jolted(震颤). I raced to the staircase and called out, "Sally! Come down immediately! "
"There's some really good stuff(艺术作品)up there." She stepped down, looking confused. I pushed her toward the front door, waving at the family, saying, "Sorry, please forgive us, you have a really nice place." Outside, when I told Sally what happened, she covered her mouth, laughing. She couldn't believe how long they let us look around without saying anything.
The real McNay was splendid, but we felt nervous the whole time we were there. Van Gogh, Picasso. This time, we stayed together, in case anything else unusual happened.
Thirty years later, a woman approached me in a public place. "Excuse me, did you ever enter a residence, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?"
"Yes. But how do you know? We never told anyone. "
"That was my home. I was a teenager sitting in the hall. Before you came over, I never realized what a beautiful place I lived in. I never felt lucky before. You thought it was a museum. My feelings about my home changed after that. I've always wanted to thank you."

When Starbucks opened its first outlet there in 1999 it was far from clear that the country’s enthusiastic tea drinkers would take to such a different and usually more costly-source of caffeine.
Starbucks tried to entice(引诱)customers unused to coffee’s bitter taste by promoting milk- and sugar-heavy mixtures such as Frappuccinos (星冰乐).
Starbucks now has about 3,800 outlets in China- more than in any other country outside America.
Coffee has become fashionable among the middle class. Statista, a business-intelligence portal(门户网站),says the roast coffee market in China is growing by more than 10% a year. Starbucks and its rivals see big future for expanding there.
Since its founding less than two years ago, Luckin-a newly-founded coffee brand in China- has opened more than 2,300 outlets. On May 17th Luckin's first public offering on the NASDAQ stock market raised more than $570m, giving it a value of about $4 billion. Most of Luckin’s outlets are merely small shops where busy white-collar workers pick up their drinks, having ordered them online. Super-fast delivery can also be arranged through the company’s app,
