A study of 3,884 students from primary schools to colleges found that examinations made 83.1 percent of primary students anxious, and more than 40 percent of high school children were out of sorts (身体不适)because of stress and anxiety.

Moreover, 75 percent of the high school respondents admitted that they had problems talking to their parents and more than 55 percent of them found it hard to associate with other people, according to the study.

It is not difficult to conclude that our children are not happy.

Today's kids are coming home from school weighed down with backpacks full of books and worksheets. They are spending hours at desk at night, seldom going outside to play and getting to bed late.

How can this be a good thing?

Homework is eating away children's time to play freely with neighborhood kids - and more importantly, their time to sleep.

Homework can enrich the education process. But like all things, too much of it may dampen (减 少)a student's enthusiasm for learning. To raise cheerful, contented and well-mannered children, parents need to put in a lot of time and effort. Their eyes should go beyond their children's preparations for tests. Children need a break too. So let them be in control of parts of the day.

A.High school students suffer more than primary school students.
B.Most of the students have no problem talking to their parents.

2. According to the text, what do the children have to do with too much homework?
A.They have to take their backpacks.
B.They have to stay up late.
C.They have to eat more.
D.They have more time to play outdoors.
3. What does the author suggest the parents do?
A.They should spend more time with their children.
B.They need to ask their children to work hard.
C.They should not care about their children's test results.
D.They need to give children more free time.
4. What is the author's attitude toward giving children too much homework?
A.Negative.B.Supportive.
C.Unconcerned.D.Uncertain

【推荐1】How to Write a Story

Writing a detailed story takes patience and practice.     1    , though , you can handle the challenge.

Keep the outline short

Avoid complete sentences.     2    . Long outlines with complete sentences end up being unnecessarily wordy. Sometimes they look like full paragraphs rather than brief outlines. Spending too much time and putting too much detail into your outline is effort you could be putting into writing the story itself.

Choose a point of view

Once you've written your outline and thought about the story you want to tell, decide at what point the reader enters the story. For you, and especially for the reader, the experience is a more intriguing one if the reader begins the story in the middle of the action.     3    . It will get your reader's attention immediately. He wants to continue reading surely. A boring opening means a bored reader who has no interest in moving on.

    4

Avoid giving everything away about the character in the first few paragraphs. Instead, consider different ways you can reveal different facets of the characters to your readers without stating them in an obvious way.     5    . If you take on too many, you'll find you won't be able to develop each of them fully in only a few pages.

A.Develop the characters
B.Instead, use short phrases or terms
C.Begin your story in an interesting way
D.If you're motivated and truly love to write
E.Before you write anything, you need an idea for a great story
F.Limit the number of main characters you include in your story
G.Once you've written your outline about the story that you want to tell

My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic.Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School.“Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents.

Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs.I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself.By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school.

Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me.I am proud to be a Southside Tiger.

【推荐3】As a university professor, I have been immersed in theory and guess for so long that it recently struck me: I don’t know how to do anything. By “do”, I mean something material, something done with my hands that produce an actual product.

The trades come to mind. Whenever I call an electrician, or a mason, or a carpenter, I look on in wonder as they smoothly employ their skills. For example, I recently had a new kitchen sink nulled by a young man. He kept singing as he worked at the pipes. Minutes later, he turned on the water and it flowed forth with nothing similar to a leak. Is this not a minor miracle?

All of this brought me to a decision: I registered for an adult evening course at a local technical school. The title: Basic Electricity and Wiring (线路). When we began, I felt immediately overwhelmed. So many new terms. In an instant, I was a student again in all respects: The anxiety, the self-doubt, the wondering if I had made a mistake. And then I recalled: “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence... Education will not; the world is full of educated failures.” So I worked my way through my basic wiring course. My initial impulse to jump ship gradually gave way to the awareness that I was, indeed, acquiring a useful new skill.

What followed ahead was the course’s climax: Each student was presented with a switch and a lighting fixture (照明设备). The task was to install them-in-a-door-frame and-wire them; but not throw the switch until the instructor was present. There I was, an experienced professor, standing like a fresh-faced schoolboy. I worked away, using my tools to connect wires. When I was done, I raised my hand. The instructor looked over my job and glanced at me. “Hit the switch,” he said.

It’s hard to characterize that moment. But I did feel that learning is not something that ends early in life. I need to widen my horizon through constant learning. The broader the horizon, the more opportunities there are to learn something new.

I hit the switch.

There was light.

In more ways than one.

1. Why did the author register for an adult evening course?
A.Because he met several problems in the daily life.
B.Because he wanted to learn the secret of the miracle.
C.Because he needed to strengthen his theoretical knowledge.
D.Because he desired to make actual products with his own hands.
2. What was the author’s first thought when he began his course?
A.Dropping out of the evening course.B.Ignoring so many new terms.
C.Setting a goal and never giving up.D.Impressing others with his new skills.
3. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Responsible and sharp-eyed.B.Determined and self-motivated.
C.Creative and well-informed.D.Considerate and widely-interested.
4. What does the story intend to tell us?
A.There is no end to learning.B.One good turn deserves another.
C.Actions speak louder than words.D.A fall in a pit, a gain in your wit.
