I was in the garden with Augie, my grandson, watching the bees. ''How do they make honey? '' Augie asked. ''Actually, Augie, I don't know, '' I replied. ''But, Grandma, you have your phone, '' he said. For Augie, holding a smartphone almost means knowing everything.
During my childhood I was crazy about books. Over time, reading hijacked my brain, as large areas once processing the real world adapted to processing the printed word. As far as I can tell, this early immersion (沉浸) didn't prevent my development.
Many parents worry that ''screen time'' will damage children’s development, but recent research suggests that most of the common fears about children and screens are unfounded. There is one exception: looking at screens before bed really disturbs sleep, in people of all ages. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) used to recommend strict restrictions on screen exposure. Last year, the organization examined the relevant science more thoroughly and changed its recommendations. The new guidelines stress that what matters is what children watch and with whom.
New tools have always led to panic guesses. The novel, the telephone, and the television were all declared to be the End of Civilization, particularly in the hands of the young. Part of the reason may be that adult brains require a lot of focus and effort to learn something new, while children's brains are designed to master new environments naturally. New technologies always seem disturbing to the adults attempting to master them, while attractive to those children like Augie.
When Augie's father got home, Augie rushed to meet him and said in excitement. ''Daddy, Daddy, look, '' he said, reaching for my phone. ''Do you know how bees make honey? I'll show you…''

Real riches consist of well-developed and hearty capacities(能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped(淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too many rooms ,yet their house of life ia s hut(小屋).
Your house of life ought to be a mansion(豪宅) , a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm(热心,热情) adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.
Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of hamburgers and eggs when you’re hungry.
Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but someone who likes a library.
Music like Mozart’s and Bach’s shouldn’t be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you’ve brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.
Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, played a bit.
Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.

【推荐2】A few years ago, Charles Barkley got into a lot of trouble for making the observation that sports figures didn't need to be role models. Thousands of fans and professional journalists were cross at this attack on the fundamental principle that the person who jumps highest must aim highest and the person who handles the running back must also be able to deal with life's problems with grace as well.
The problem is not that we look to these people for perfection when they take off their uniforms. It's that we expect anyone to be our representatives for perfection. That's stupid and it makes the rest of us down here lazy.
I get the importance of having heroes, the people who inspire us to cultivate the best potential within us and nurture our better angels. I personally have many heroes, from my mother, Lucy, to my favorite law professor, Howard. But these are personal contacts, people who have-actually touched my hand and my heart, and who occupy a pedestal(基座)built of my own experiences and aspirations. To look at an athlete or an actress with high salary and demand that he or she match our dreams is not only a waste of time, but it's dangerous. The danger comes in how this type of hero worship dehumanizes both the object of affection and the person who blindly adores. That was Barkley's point, not that we should give public figures a pass for being faulty but that we shouldn't abandon our own moral compasses and look to them for true north.
Recently on a television program I participated in, the discussion turned to Kathleen Kane. Someone suggested that the fact that the first female attorney general(首席检察官)in Pennsylvania was really messing things up could have unfortunate consequences for women seeking elected office. I offered the opinion that Kane was unquestionably criticized and that it was not hatred towards woman but incompetence at the root of the attacks. After the show aired, I had people emailing to tell me that I was either a traitor(叛徒)for publicly attacking a fellow female when we need to stand together behind this "role model", or a fool for not going a step further to say that this incompetent lawyer had made it harder for all women to move to the next level.
How depressing! Why should the inferior performance of one woman lead to such diverse but passionate views in people? The answer is obvious: Kane has stopped being an attorney general but has instead become The First Female Attorney General. She can't just make a mistake and pay the normal consequences.
If we stopped trying to live our lives through the accomplishments of public figures, many of whom look and sound like us, we'd learn how to recognize the heroic character of those we might actually know, and the heroic potential within ourselves. Or, perhaps, the honesty to accept our ordinary humanity.
1. Many people were angry with Charles Barkley mainly because________.A.he broke fundamental principles in life | B.he was not good enough to be a role model |
C.he doubted the perfection of some sports figures | D.he thought sports figures could have weaknesses |
A.Because we may let go of our own moral standards. |
B.Because an athlete or actress cannot match our dreams. |
C.Because we blindly admire public figures for their faults. |
D.Because we shouldn't waste time imitating public figures. |
A.unfairly criticized due to being female | B.the first female attorney general in the US |
C.less qualified than the public had expected | D.a role model for women seeking elected office |
A.Be Our Representatives for Perfection | B.Exploration of Our Own Heroic Potential |

Spirituality means different things to different people and there is no one way of exploring or expressing it, but it is a basic human need to search for meaning. For many people, spirituality and religion are synonymous(同义的), but others primarily pursue knowledge rather than faith, like Socrates or Einstein, and they explore and express spirituality through questioning and inquiry. In that way, philosophy and science rather than faith can be the means whereby we explore the “big question”. Spirituality relates to how we find meaning and purpose and how we understand our place on the planet and within the universe.
Spirituality, in the broad sense, impacts upon stress and mental health, lifestyle choices, relationships and our coping ability. Here we are to explore the relationships between spirituality, meaning and health, and how we can make spirituality an integrated element of our daily life.
The search for meaning is hard to measure but being able to make meaning of life, and especially of adversity, can be enormously beneficial to mental health when we are coping with major life events. As Carl Jung said, “The lack of meaning in life is a soul-sickness whose full extent and full import our age has not yet begun to comprehend.”
A.An active search for meaning is a vital part of what makes us human. |
B.No studies showed an increased risk of suicide for churchgoers. |
C.There are many reasons why people are protected against various problems. |
D.As individuals, the search for meaning helps to keep us healthy. |
E.This exploration aims to be relevant to each person’s personal and cultural background. |
F.Others find meaning through creativity, relationships, environmentalism and social justice. |

Don’t make this mistake yourself. You do hope your children can get in touch with the police intime.
Teach children about basic care for cuts and scrapes. In my house, the kids all know that cuts must be cleaned and know where the bandages are.

With the rising cost of living affecting all of us, staying warmer this winter feels like it’s going to be a difficult task. The government has already brought in measures to help with the cost of living.
Love layers
Rather than snuggling into one big jumper, think about wearing plenty of thin layers instead.
Warm from the inside out
Winter is a great time for rustling up soups and stews, but even a bowl of hot porridge can set you up from breakfast onwards. Eating hot, nutritious dishes can keep you warm and healthy.
Heat carefully
If you’re able to heat all of your rooms, keep your main living room at 18-21 ℃(64-70℉F) and the rest of your house around 16 ℃(61°F).
Staying active is good for your health in general, but if it is too cold to walk outside, then catching up on the household chores is a great way of making sure you’re getting up and about. Even light exercise can keep you warm, so grab that vacuum cleaner or duster, get moving and make your house shine.

Last week I had a holiday, from work, but none of my friends had the same week off. I decided that I still wanted to do something, so I booked a train ride to Toronto and reserved a bed in a hostel for one week.
One week by myself. Would I be lonely? Would I be bored? Quite the opposite. In fact, there are many benefits that come from traveling alone. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted. I spent hours in museums that would have seemed boring and dull to some of my friends. I walked all around the city, which' some people may have found too exhausting. Instead of relying on someone else to remember directions or to suggest activities to do, I discovered my' independence and developed map-reading skills that I didn’t know I had. I could get up and go to sleep when I wanted and I didn’t have to wait for anyone else to shower and get ready every morning. Being in the safe environment of a hostel with like-minded travelers also gives a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world, which can help combat loneliness.
In spite of the benefits, I found that there were also some disadvantages of traveling alone. I missed having someone to talk to and to bounce ideas off. Experiences are often more enjoyable if they are shared, and part of the fun of traveling is the memories you have afterwards. Without a travel partner, I won’t be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with a friend or family member in years to come.
In addition, eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hostel was less fun on my own.
I am very proud of myself for traveling alone, and I had a fantastic time in Toronto. However, in the future, I think I will always prefer to travel with another person or in a small group. Though, maybe it depends on who you travel with I would rather be by myself than with someone who is lazy, difficult and argumentative.

【推荐2】Happiness is an abstract concept. When one thinks of a typical happy person, smiling, laughing and cheering are what usually comes to mind. However, if people stop smiling or laughing, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are unhappy. Happiness has many different levels, and it is difficult to place the word in one concrete category.
Many people believe as people grow older, they will feel more happiness. However, I just find they are not always so. When asking my twelve-year-old sister what made her happy, she initially told me that sleeping made her happy, and then she looked at me for a reaction. When I had none, she changed her answer to food, then to fashion, and then finally to family. Each time she glanced at me, looking for affirmation (肯定) that she had given a "right" answer.
My younger cousin, who is even younger than my sister, gave me an answer that surprised me. It wasn’t eating candy or watching TV that made her happy. It was love. Considering the clear differences between my sister and cousin in their answers, I came to see that age doesn't always largely contribute to happiness.
Asking my grandmother what brings her happiness, she immediately answered "her family" without hesitation. This is something I expected, as my grandma is always a family-centered person. This also aligns with her culture, being from Italy and growing up during the 50s, where family values were at its highest point in society.
Asking myself this question, I think carefully about my answers. Sure, my family, friends and pets make me happy, but so do reading, writing and watching movies. This is why I have come to the conclusion that I have no answer to my own question.
There is no one single thing that makes me the happiest, because, like everybody, my mood depends on many factors. Happiness depends on external factors, as well as one’s personality and age. This is why I have come to the conclusion that the journey of happiness cannot truly be defined, and that there isn’t one thing above all that makes everyone the happiest.

Mussels are really beautiful in the autumn. When you cook seasonally, you use whatever you have at hand, and each time a food material comes back in season, you are so happy to see it. It's like going back to old friends, like going home. I do feel the dish with mussels is so. It is the same with a dish made by my mother. It's my mum's chicken with cherries. When I was a child, cherries would mark the end of the school year. We'd always get a box of each when school was out for the summer. I remember sitting in the garden hanging cherries in pairs on my ears like earrings and spitting out the pips, hoping a tree would grow.
Food should take you somewhere special like that-not in a confusing way, but in a nurturing way, for both your body and your soul. It should take you to a happy place, which is linked to memory. Someone I work with says all my recipes are memory-bound.
No cook has influenced me more than Alice: valuing farmers, pushing for organics and clean soil. She has made me think about food waste, and about how food can contribute to a solution to wider problems. Alice takes me back to that moment when I fell in love with cooking. Thirty-five years on, I still feel the same.

It was said that school should not start before February 17th. The exact start time of school will depend on situations and further notices.
However, many parents are very worried that putting off the start of school may affect children’s studies. It they have such a long winter vacation, children will not learn any knowledge, read books or study at all. They may forget what they have learnt before. Staying at home for a long time will make them keep eating, sleeping and playing, which seriously affect their physical and mental health.
In short, the close of school influences learning and develops bad habits, so how should we avoid these problems? Local education departments have also issued a notice, that is, to organize online teaching and create a network platform, where necessary courses will be shown every day, and online teaching will be given by excellent teachers of the subject, and students can learn at home through computer or mobile network.
It should be said that such a method is very good. It can not only keep students indoors and not worry about the infection of the disease, but also make them study at home, improve their learning ability, and truly achieve “no suspension of classes”. Both the platform itself and the recorded lesson resources are more useful, and are welcomed by parents and teachers.
Of course, except for learning at home, it is also necessary to teach children about health knowledge, especially how to keep away from touching virus; at the same time, it is also necessary for children to do some physical exercises or some games, which is good for physical health at home.

The woman was one of about 500 students to pick up diplomas (学位证书) at Mills College. “It’s taken me quite a long time because I’ve had a busy life,” said Soares. “I’m finally achieving it, and it makes me feel really good.”
Soares, who has six children and 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, is believed to be the world’s second oldest person to graduate from college. Soares said she doesn’t know the source of her longevity (长寿). No one in her family has lived as long as she has — but she believes it has something to do with eating lots of fresh vegetables.
She hopes others realize that it’s never too late to get a college education. “There’s no reason why you could not go back,” Soares said. “Some people say it’s too late or that there is much work. They may not realize that once you try it, it’s exciting to go to school.”
