Natural selection is the process by which one type of animal within a species thrives because of certain characteristics that make it more likely to live than others in its group. The history of the peppered moth(灰蛾)is an example of the natural selection process.

In 19th century England, certain types of peppered moths were able to better blend(融合)into their surroundings. During that time period, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was part of this change, and with it came air pollution. Natural selection often takes hundred or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process occurred comparatively quickly.

At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light-colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark-colored wings. Because the light-colored moths blended into the light-colored bark on the trees, they could not be easily seen by birds that would eat them. As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot(烟煤)and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-colored moths now had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light-colored to being mostly dark-colored.

In the 20th century, the air cleared up, and the peppered moth population changed again. As tree trunks lighted due to less soot in the air, light-colored moths once again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as soot levels declined. Depending on their environment, the coloration of the moths helped them to be “naturally selected” to survive.

4. Which would most likely happen if soot darkened England’s trees again?

Animal experts say one of the world's most beautiful and rare kinds of big cat is close to disappearing from the wild. A study earlier this year found that about thirty Amur leopards (豹) still live free. The cats are also called Far Eastern leopards.

Recently, their number has been reduced by one, Some person shot a female Amur, then beat her to death. The animal's body was discovered last month in the Barsovy National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Russia.

An official of the World Wildlife Fund, Darron, said this was the third such killing in the area in the past fives years. Mr, Collins said the death of even one adult female is a huge loss for the endangered cat, He noted that the killing reduces the possibility for cubs (幼兽) or young.

It is not clear how many Amur leopards still live free. One population count was performed in February and March. Wildlife expert Dmitry Pikuuov led this study. It found evidence of seven to nine males. The study identified three to seven females without cubs, Four leopards were identified as females with cubs. In all, five or six cubs were recorded, Six to eight animals could not be identified.

Most of the land where the Amur leopard once lived was in China.New roads and climate change there threatened the animals. So did hunters who kill big cats for their body parts.

Mr. Pikuuov says adult Amurs need about five hundred square kilometers with good forests to survive. He said they also need a large and continuing supply of animals like deer for food. He believes the answer to saving the Amur leopard is for governments to provide protected spaces for wildlife.

【推荐2】Nowadays, bamboo growth cycles and the dietary needs of lemurs (狐猴) are out of sync. Findings show rainfalls are changing annually. Over the past two years, there has been a three-month delay in the rainy season and new tender shoots that lemurs consume for nutrition are appearing in January and February—14 days after the first rainfall, says Patricia Chapple Wright, a primatologist, anthropologist, and conservationist at Stony Brook University. “Lemurs eat a food source that is very adaptive,” Patricia Wright told PBS NewsHour. “It’s able to stand climate change, but the lemurs, unfortunately, can’t adapt quickly to this changed cycle.”

Since baby lemurs are born in November, the delayed rainy season is dangerously affecting the survival of them for lack of nutrition available for both the mothers and offspring. “This is why, for extreme feeding specialists like the greater bamboo lemur, climate change can be an unknowing killer,” Wright says. “Making the lemurs rely on bamboo stems(茎) for just a bit longer may be enough to tip the balance from existence to extinction.” The lemurs’ highly specialized teeth are also similar to the pandas’ teeth. Both are the mammals able to chew up stems. But this diet can’t last for more than a season or two because the stems can wear away their teeth.

The researchers believe that climate change is affecting the lemurs. The fossil record shows that the lemurs once lived throughout the island. Today, the mammals are cornered on the eastern side, where the dry season at present is the shortest. And if people continue the deforestation practice in the area, the lemurs will have nowhere to go.

The situation is serious, so Wright and her colleagues plan to create bamboo corridors within the rainforests, which will provide available bamboo to eat. They want to work with local villagers to plant more bamboo and manage automatic watering systems when dry seasons last long. They also want to build the local economy by allowing people to harvest a part of bamboo while the rest remains with the lemurs, so people will be interested. Wright’s conservation plans include moving lemurs back to other places on the island as well.

A.They may run out of bamboo.
B.They can’t adapt to the hot season.
C.They dislike the less delicious stems.
D.They can’t chew the stems for a long period.
3. What mainly caused the living area of lemurs to narrow?
A.The climate change.B.Their teeth protection.
C.The decreasing forest.D.Their special dietary habits.
4. Which of the following may Wright approve of to protect lemurs?
A.Shortening the dry season.
B.Forbidding the cutting of bamboo.

【推荐3】While there are plenty of factors that go into how attractive you are to mosquitoes, new research has found the colors you’re wearing definitely play a role.

For the study, researchers from the University of Washington tracked the behavior of female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes when they were given different types of visual and scent cues (气味信号). The researchers put the mosquitoes into small test rooms and exposed them to different things, like a colored dot (小圆点) or person’s hand.

The mosquitoes first detect that you’re around by smelling carbon dioxide from your breath, which pushes them to look for certain colors and visual patterns that could indicate food, the researchers explained. When there was no scent cue like carbon dioxide in the test rooms, the mosquitoes neglected the colored dot, no matter what color it was. But once researchers sprayed carbon dioxide in the room, they flew toward dots that were red, orange, or black. Dots that were green, blue, or purple were overlooked.

“Light colors are perceived as a threat to mosquitoes, which is why many species avoid biting in direct sunlight,” researcher Timothy Best says. “Mosquitoes are very likely to be affected by dehydration (脱水) which can even cause them to die, therefore light colors may represent danger and cause avoidance. In contrast, darker colors may copy shadows, which are more likely to absorb and preserve heat, allowing mosquitoes to locate a host.”

If you have the option of wearing lighter or darker clothes when you know you’ll be going into an area with lots of mosquitoes, you’d better go with the lighter choice. Dark colors stand out to mosquitoes, whereas light colors blend in. When you’re going into areas where these small insects are known to hide, you can use bug spray and wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Regularly get rid of standing water around your home and empty items that hold water such as bird baths, toys, and planters. Each of these protective measures will contribute to decreasing your likelihood of getting bitten. And, if you’re able to wear something other than red or dark colors, even better.

1. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The result of the experiment.B.The process of the experiment.
C.The purpose of the experiment.D.The significance of the experiment.
2. What does the underlined word “neglected” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Adored.B.Located.C.Ignored.D.Approached.
3. Which place may be more attractive to mosquitoes according to Timothy Best?
A.A dry and clean yard.B.A classroom painted in white.
C.A kitchen with delicious food.D.A bathroom with dark walls.
4. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.How to protect plants.B.How to keep the room tidy.
C.How to avoid mosquito bites.D.How to choose summer clothes.
