● Taste!

You’d better taste some specials (特产) in the area. Food in some places is very delicious. So why not taste it? Maybe you have just one chance to taste it in your life.

● Write!

When you visit a place, you should take a pen and a notebook, so you can write down what you see and what you think during the trip.

My name is Robinson Crusoe, and I was born in the city of York in 1632. My father was a successful businessman. I had two elder brothers. One of them worked in the army and was killed during the war against Spain. The other was missing one day, and we never knew what had happened to him. My father gave me a good education and wanted me to be a lawyer (律师).

However, I wanted to be a sailor and go to sea. My father was very angry with me. He didn’t understand why I wanted to leave his house, where I would have an easy and comfortable life.

I tried to do what he wanted me to do, but I couldn’t. I spoke to my mother.

“Please ask Dad if he will let me have one voyage by sea,” I asked her. “When I return, I will live the life he wants me to live.”

Mum was angry. “Your father will not let you go. I don’t want you to go to sea either. It’s dangerous.”

I argued with my parents for another year. Then, I went to Hull with a friend who was going to London by ship. He invited me to go with him, and I agreed. I didn’t even tell my parents before leaving. I just went. That was how all my bad luck began.

DIY, which means Do It Yourself, is quite popular in the UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programmes show people how to DIY.

English people like DIY. Huge numbers of people spend their holidays making their homes a better place to live in. If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. More and more people enjoy the fun of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. They like making their houses better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.

DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture which people need to get together themselves with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can’t understand the instructions.

DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical (电的) should be done by a professional worker. But many people don’t care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year over 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in the UK, including 41,000 who fell off ladders.

DIY can bring us fun and help us save money, but it is not always as easy as we think ifwe bite off more than we can chew (咀嚼). Maybe factories should make products that are easier and safer for us to DIY.

Ben was hoping for a video game for his birthday. He also wanted a board game. And he wanted some comics too.

He got the board game and some comics, but what was in the last package? It was from his sister Karen. He slowly unwrapped the package. It didn’t feel like a video game.

It was a purple sweater. Purple was his least favourite colour. He smiled and thanked Karen nicely, but he didn’t want to wear that sweater. He couldn’t wear purple!

He quickly put the sweater away in his room. Then he ran off to play his new board game with his family.

One day a few weeks later, Ben’s mother asked him about the sweater.

“Why don’t you wear your purple sweater today?” she asked him. “Your sister made it just for you!”

“I’m not cold,” Ben said without thinking. In fact, he was lying. He shivered（发抖）all day.

Then one day they were going out to dinner as a family. His mother asked him to wear the sweater again. “I don’t want to wear it because I hate it,” he quickly replied.

“Ben,” said his mother, “I know it’s not the nicest sweater in the world, but think about how important Karen is to you. You know she will be proud if you wear it just this once.”

Ben walked slowly to his room. He knew his mother was right. He wore the sweater to dinner. His sister smiled all night.
