A Letter From 2070 Hi, this is the year 2070. I have just turned 50, but I look like a person of 85. Because I don’t have enough water to drink. I’m afraid I don’t have much time left to live. I’m already one of the oldest people in this society. I remember when I was five years old. Everything was very different. There were lots of trees in the parks. I could enjoy a shower for half an hour. At that time, women had beautiful hair. Now we have to shave our heads to keep them clean without the use of water. I remember there were “Save Water” warnings(警告)in many places, but nobody paid attention. We believed water would last forever. Now, all the rivers and lakes are either dry or polluted. Water is much more expensive than gold. In the past, doctors suggested adults drink eight glasses of water a day. Now days, I am only allowed half a glass. People die young. When my son asks me about my childhood. I tell him about how pleasant it was to fish in the rivers and how healthy people were. When he asks, “Why is there no clean water now?” I feel very sorry. I belong to a person who turned a blind eye to all the warnings. I wish this letter could travel back in time and that it would make people living in the 2020s truly understand the importance of saving water. Best, Natalie |

Du Fu, one of the greatest poets in China, is popular with most of us. However, Du is largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC’s one-hour documentary Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, introduces the great poet to Westerners. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest writers of the West.
In the film, British historian Michael Wood pictures the poet’s life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet’s birthplace of Gongyi in Henan and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) in Chengdu. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who tell the fantastic stories of the poet. The film also has talks with researchers and recitals of Du’s works by British actor Sir Ian McKellen. He is known for performing Shakespeare’s works.
The documentary explains why Du’s works have been popular for so long. “Chinese people really treasure the recording of history and Du Fu is better than anyone at showing history in his works.” said Zeng Xiangbo, a teacher at Renmin University.
Du lived under the rule of Tang Xuanzong and he worked for the government. But because of the An Lushan Rebellion (安史之乱), he ran away with his family, living a poor life. Emo Rubik first created cubes to help his students understand 3D geometry(几何). Unexpectedly, the Rubik’s Cube became one of the most well-known toys in history, with more than 350 million sold till now. Here are some questions with Emo Rubik for people to better understand the cubes.
●How did you come up with the Rubik’s Cube?
I was looking for a tool to explain 3D transformation(转换). That led me to discover the Cube. I don’t like the word “invent” because it’s really just to find what is already there but not seen by others. Another person can take a walk on your road and see stones but you might see that one has the possibility to become a treasure. What you need is patience.
●What difficulty did you face when selling your cubes widely?
Finding people who have the same ideas as you takes time and luck. You need a partner with certain knowledge. And you need teamwork so that you’re moving together. Our first factory was a very small company(公司). But even so, the Cube I made with them was very popular. Later, we finally found another American toy company and made a deal. That is the beginning of the Cube’s craze in the world.
●You later created other Rubik products. How did you keep creating?
Many people have lots of ideas. I think what makes me different is that I have a good ability of evaluating(评估) mine, and if I find something important in one of my ideas, I will keep on doing it before I’m able to make it perfect. Probably the most important thing is that I love what I do. That’s the key to achieving your goals.
