Mrs. White was fond of singing. She had a good voice, but some of her high notes (高音) sounded like the axle (车轴) without enough oil.
Mrs. White knew this very well and tried her best to practice her high notes. As she didn’t want to trouble the other members of her family, she usually went for long walks along the roads. Mrs. White was a shy woman. Once she saw cars or people coming along the road, she would stop and wait until they passed.
One afternoon, a fast red car came up behind her. It was going so fast that she didn’t hear it until it was only a few metres from her. She was singing some of her highest notes at that time.
As the car went past her, she saw a strange look coming over the driver’s face. The driver stopped his car and got out of it. He began to look carefully at all his tyres to see if there was something wrong with them. Mrs. White didn’t want to tell him what the noise was. Most people in the United States call these animals buffalo, but bison is their scientific name (学名). True buffalo are found in Africa and Asia.
American bison are the largest land animals in North America. An adult bison stands about six feet tall at the shoulders and can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. About 150 years ago, 30 million of these huge animals lived on the American plains.
Native (本土的) Americans depended on bison to live. They used bison for food, clothing, tools, shelter, and fuel. Centuries of hunting by Native Americans did not reduce the country’s bison population. That’s because Native Americans hunted only for what they needed. But between 1800 and 1900, settlers and hunters killed almost all of the bison. Bison became endangered, and their numbers fell to about 2,000. Settlers shot bison to make room for cattle, which they wanted to raise on the plains. Hunters sold bison fur for high prices, so they shot as many bison as they could.
In 1894, Congress banned bison hunting. Over the next century, the number of bison began to increase. About 20,000 bison now live freely on the plains. They may help to restore some land in the ecosystem. Bison help the ecosystem by keeping moving while they are grazing (吃草). In this way, they don’t overgraze the tall grass that protects smaller animals.
32. What made the number of bison decrease so much?A.The hunting of Native Americans. | B.The hunting of settlers and hunters. |
