Eight-year-old Ling becomes an online star and she has millions of fans. Now, she is being interviewed on TV about her own cooking by a reporter called Ming.

Judy, Lisa and Jim are in the Spoken English Club in Sunshine Middle School. They have activities every Friday afternoon. Today is Friday, they are talking about what has impressed them most in the 2022 winter Olympics on 4th February and the 2022 Winter Paralympics a month later in Beijing. Here are their speeches.

The year 2040 sounds like a long way off. By that time, what will technologies have looked like and what changes will they have brought to classrooms? Here are some examples of what we may see in schools in the coming years.

Interactive walls（互动墙）

In traditional classrooms, teachers write on blackboards. But in future classrooms, teachers will write all the important points on interactive walls. The difference is that interactive walls can also show what students have written on their own desks. It can encourage them to take part in classroom activities and to become more active in their learning.

Holograms（全息图）

What does the inside of a planet look like? Most of us learn about this from photos in books. But it is hard to imagine and to understand a planet only through the use of flat pictures. Students in the future are likely to have a very different experience. With the help of holographic technology（全息技术）, they can learn from 3-D image （三维图像）that are projected inside of the classroom.

Virtual reality（虚拟现实）

Virtual reality has been used to teach pilots how to fly planes. In 2040, it may provide students with immaterial scenes（沉浸式场景）. For example, when they learn about an ancient queen, they will be able to “walk” in her castle. They will not only read about history, but also “experience” it.

There are many different stories about the history of the umbrella. According to an old Chinese story, the umbrella     51     (invent) by Luban’s wife about 3,000 years ago.

Luban was     52     (famous) craftsman（工匠）in ancient China. One day, Luban and his wife     53     (walk) by the West lake. They were enjoying the     54     (beauty) scene when it suddenly started to rain     55     (heavy). After they returned home, they were all wet.

“Hello, everyone! Welcome to Tiangong Class,” With this greeting, a special lecture began on Tiangong space station on Dec 9, 2021. It’s about 400 kilometers above Earth. The space lecture lasted for about an hour and it was broadcast live to millions of students. Three astronauts from Shenzhou XIII crew—Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfiu hosted the lecture. They showed how they live and work on the space station and did some interesting experiments. The experiments are interesting because they could only be done in space. It was the second live space lecture that Wang Yaping on the space station.

Compared with the class nine years ago, the space lecture in 2021 was greatly different. Firstly, the “classroom” was bigger. Wang Yaping delivered the space lecture in Tianhe space core module（核心舱）, which is the biggest spacecraft developed by China till now. Secondly, the quality of space-to-ground interaction and communication was also much improved. Thirdly, with the help of China’s Tianlian relay satellites, the transmission（传输）speed was highly increased and the whole live broadcast ran smoothly. These changes showed that Chinese aerospace industry has made great progress in the past nine years. Finally, along with the technological progress, the space lecture discussed more disciplines of science. For example, biology was added.

Though these space lectures showed various topics, the aim behind them has never changed. Both space lectures aim to spread knowledge about manned spaceflights among young people and encourage them to love science. Zhou Jianping, designer-in-chief of China’s manned space program said that the spirit of science in the youth is an important driver of the progress of mankind and these space activities can help them build the spirit of loving science.
