Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to make money for my schooling.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt(缝被子). I silently sat beside her.

“Mum, is there love between you and Dad?” I asked in a very low voice.

With surprise in her eyes, she stopped her work for a while. Then she said, “Susan, look at this thread(线). It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. It makes the quilt strong. If life is a quilt, love should be a thread. Love is inside.”

I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month.

After they were back, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road every day. They were so kind to each other and it seemed they were the happiest couple.

The doctor had said my father would recover(康复) in two months. But after two months my father still couldn’t seem to walk alone. We were all worried. “Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.

“Susan, don’t worry about me.” he said with a smile. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mum. I like this kind of life.” Reading his eyes, I knew he loves my mother deeply.

Now I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

Do you like listening to music? Will all of the sounds bring happiness to you? Do you know some sounds are noise? What is noise? Noise is a loud or unwanted sound. It is also a kind of pollution.

Where is noise from? Noise can be caused by many kinds of machines, such as motorcycles(摩托车), planes and TVs. And, to some people, rock music is also noise.

What will happen to people who live near noisy machines or use them for a period of time? Doctors find that noise pollution can influence both our health and behavior. It can cause high blood pressure, hearing loss(丧失), sleep problems, and other harmful influences.

Scientists use a unit of measure(测量) called a decibel(分贝) to measure the loudness of a sound. The sound of a quiet room, for example, measures 35 decibels. The sound of a usual talk measures between 40 to 65 decibels. The sound of the traffic and of some rock music can measure over 120 decibels. The sound at this high level causes the greatest hearing loss.

How do we reduce noise harm? Turn down your music player, and wear earplugs(耳塞) when you are working in a noisy environment. Earplugs can protect your ears.

I think our school days are the best and happiest days in our life. We should learn not to waste this wonderful period of time.
