People got very excited when China’s Eileen Gu won the women’s big air free-skiing gold in Beijing. After two times’ jumping, Gu jumped into the top position with her ________ run, scored 94.50. There was an old truck driver who knew every corner of the country very well.

One day, he had to train a new truck driver. The new driver was very young. The old driver asked the younger one to drive for a while. The young one drove a big 18-wheeler for about five hours and became very tired. He asked the old driver to take over for a while.

The old driver drove for 10 hours and was not even tired, as he had done this for years. The young man was very curious and asked the old man how he could drive for hours and not get tired.

The old man asked him, “What do you do in the morning just before you leave your house?” The young man replied, “I kiss my wife goodbye and tell her I am going to work.”

The old one said, “That is your problem.” The young man asked, “What do you mean?”

Yang Hongwei, 56, makes kites at her shop in Weifang, Shandong.

Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong Province has a long history of making kites. According to local artisans, Weifang kite-making can be dated back to 2,000 years ago. At first, they were often used by the military (军事) for measuring distance and communication purposes. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), kites started to be popular among the people as entertainment.

Made from bamboo and featuring traditional Chinese paintings, Weifang kite-making was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List (国家级非物质文化遗产名录) in 2006. Started in 1984, the International Kite Festival has been held in Weifang every year.

Yang Hongwei is an inheritor (继承人) of the Weifang kite-making technique. Born into a kite-making family, Yang often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her grandfather’s workshop.

Having a special connection with kites, Yang learned the technique from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing the technique for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.

On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common patterns (花样) like butterflies and swallows, but some prints telling Chinese legends and history. For example, she ever made a kite showing a phoenix (凤凰) head lined with portraits (肖像) of 50 famous women in Chinese history on each side.

Though the idea was cool, the process was not easy.

Yang said that each woman has different characteristics in look, clothes and makeup style. To create their portraits, she spent much effort and time checking historical records or discussing the details with professionals.

In her spare time, she also travels to different countries including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand to tell people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways of making kites.

Hands-on history

Have you ever seen bronze ware (青铜器)? It can be thousands of years old.     81     (recent), Taiyuan Lingde Middle School in Shanxi held an exhibition     82     (name) Dazzling Bronze Ware Memories. The exhibits, however, were made     83     students!

The students used recycled cardboard boxes, foamed (泡沫) plastics, clay and paint to make more than 130 pieces of “bronze ware”.
