When I was a little child, my mum liked to make meals for my father and me. She often made good food for us after work. One evening, my mum placed a plate of eggs and burned biscuits in front of my dad and me. I saw the burned biscuits, and I refused to eat them. I looked up at my father. He picked up one of the burned biscuits and smiled at my mum. He asked me how my day at school was l as usual. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him eat all of biscuits.
When I got up from the table, I heard my mum say sorry to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I would never forget what he said, “Baby, I love burned biscuits.” Later I asked him if he really liked the burned biscuits. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Your mum works hard today and she’s really tired. Besides, burned biscuits never hurt anyone!”

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics were not only a sporting event but also a show for science and technology. High tech gear (设备) is helping athletes become “faster, higher, stronger”. Let’s look at some.
The fastest ice | The National Speed Skating Oval is said to have “the fastest ice”, as 12 new Olympic records and one world record were set there. The secret is new ice-making technology. Liquid carbon dioxide (液体二氧化碳) is put under the ice to keep temperature changes on the ice surface in half a degree. That keeps the ice flat. |
“Seeing” the wind | In events like freestyle skiing, ski jumping, the direction and speed of the wind can have a big effect on an athlete’s performance. A Chinese research team develops a system to measure (测量) wind. The system uses AI technology. It allows athletes and coaches to “see” wind with real-time data on their pads, and decide when and where to jump. |
Fresh air | As COVID-19 can spread through the air, clean air is key to keeping fans, workers and athletes safe and healthy. The Winter Olympics use large air purifiers (净化器) to catch and kill bacteria in the air and make sure that closed venues always have fresh air. |
Smart “Band Aid” | A wearable thermometer (温度计) can measure the body temperatures of fans and athletes. People can wear it on their upper arms to monitor (监测) their temperature in real time. It will send a warning if somebody’s body temperature goes higher than 37.3 degrees. |

What is depression (抑郁症)? It’s important to know what it is as it affects a lot of people. About 280 million people around the world have depression, according to the WHO. Recently, the Ministry of Education said China would include screening (筛查) for depression in students’ regular health checks, to find and prevent mental (心理的) problems.
It’s common to feel unhappy or sad at times. But with depression, a sad or bad mood (情绪) lasts for weeks, months, or even longer because it is a mental illness. Depression affects more than a person’s mood. It can affect the way they act and how well they do in school or at work. It can affect their energy, sleep and eating, too. If people are depressed, they lose interest in all kinds of things. Most of all, depression affects how people think and feel about themselves.
Depression can start small. For teenagers, friends, family and school can have major emotional (情绪的) effects. But depression can build and get worse. In serious situations, it may lead to suicide. However, don’t be afraid of it. Depression can be treated. If you are unhappy for more than two weeks and have some symptoms of depression, it is time to look for help from doctors or others.
You are not alone even if you are depressed. You can try the following ways to feel better. First, talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, about how you’ve been feeling. Second, try to spend time with friends or family. Third, stay active and exercise even if you don’t want to. Then, remember to eat healthy foods. What’s more, keep a regular sleep schedule.
