It’s the lunchtime break at a middle school in Shanghai. No mobile phones can be heard ringing anywhere. The common sight of crowds of children chatting on their phones or sending short messages has disappeared.
A Grade 2 student said, “I couldn’t concentrate during classes if the cellphone was with me. I couldn’t help checking if there were messages or missed phone calls. I even played games on the phone sometimes.”
The school says they feel the ban (禁令) is necessary to keep order in class. They even gave out an open letter to remind parents not to let their children bring mobile phones to school. More than 96 percent of the parents say they welcome the school’s decision. The school is also flexible (灵活的) in implementing the ban. Those students who live far from school are allowed to bring mobile phones to get in touch with their parents. But they still have to turn them off in classrooms.
Medical experts have also welcomed the school decision. They say too much dependence on mobile phones can cause many psychological (心理的) problems for school students.

Takeout boxes, used masks, fish bones, autumn leaves…Do you know which trash bin (垃圾箱) each of these goes in? To help solve this problem, three students from Xi’an Aerospace City No. 1 High School made a smart trash bin that uses voice recognition (识别). The trash bin can even understand different Chinese local languages.
“We find it’s troublesome to find the right trash bin for our daily life and we know that many people face the same problem. That’s why we want to give a hand”, said Zhang Zehua, 17, who was coding (编程) and building a garbage-sorting (垃圾分类) database (数据库). Starting last April, the three students built databases and made a sorting system for their smart bin. They learned how to use less energy and allow the bin to work for a longer time at a lower temperature.
Team member Zhang Zhenjie, 16, had a difficult task to complete. He was collecting data. While talking with his classmates, he found that people had several different ways to describe the same piece of garbage. So he made some change of the voice recognition system and greatly increased its accuracy (准确性). He also counted how much garbage a family makes daily. This helped him choose the right space for the bin.
The three teenagers are getting a patent (专利) for their design and looking for producers. They will continue to improve the trash bin and introduce it to more communities in the future. Maybe more families will use their smart bins in the future.

The marathon may have ancient roots, but its length of 26.2 miles wasn’t set until the 20th century. The first organized marathon was held in Athens at the 1896 Olympics, the start of the Games’ modern era. The idea for the modern marathon was inspired by the story of an ancient Greek messenger (信使). He ran about 25 miles, a distance (距离) of about 40 kilometers, from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, to bring news of the Athenian victory over the Persians. After passing on the message, the tired messenger fell down and died. In memory of him, the distance of the 1896 Olympic marathon was set at 40 kilometers.
For the next few Olympics, the length of a marathon remained close to 25 miles. At the 1908 London Olympic Games, however, the length increased. To let the royal (王室的) family members watch the race more easily, Queen Alexandra requested that the race start on the lawn (草地) of Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box at the Olympic stadium (体育场). The length between the two places happened to be 26.2 miles. In 1921, the length of the marathon event was officially set at 26.2 miles.
Today, marathon races take place everywhere from the North Pole to the Great Wall of China. In America alone, there are more than 1, 100 marathons each year.
41. When did the first organized marathon take place?42. How far was it from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens?
43. What happened to the messenger when he arrived in Athens?
44. Why was the length of the marathon increased in 1908?
