Global (全球的) warming is a big problem. One of the best things we do is to plant more tree. Trees can take in CO2in the air and stop global warming. China is doing a great job of “greening” the world.
A team of scientists at Boston University has been working with NASA to study Earth’s green vegetation (植被). They used a special NASA camera and found that global leaf area had increased by 5 percent since the early 2000s. And according to the study, China was responsible for 25 percent of that gain (收获). That’s about one-quarter of the size of the entire Amazon rainforest (亚马逊热带雨林).
The growth mainly came from China’s forest protection programs, NASA said. For example, since1962, China has been planting trees in Saihanba, Hebei Province. It was once a desert. But now, China has turned the area into the country’s largest man-made forest.
The Chinese public has also joined in these activities recently. Ant Forest (蚂蚁森林) gives users points for doing eco-friendly things. Users can then use these points to water and grow their own virtual (虚拟的) trees. When the virtual trees are big enough, Ant Forest will plant real trees somewhere in the world. More than 55 million trees have been planted in this way.
21. To stop global warming, planting trees is the only thing to do.22. Scientists at Boston University found that China has greatly increased its amount (数量) of green vegetation.
23. According to the study, 25 percent of trees in Amazon rainforest were planted by Chinese.
24. Saihanba is the largest man-made forest in China now.
25. The last paragraph tells us that why Ant Forest is popular in China.
If you look at the top of your phone, you’ll usually see a little symbol that says 3G or 4G. The “G” stands for the “generation(代)” of your mobile network. But the symbols will become things of the past after 5G networks fully arrive.
On March 30, Shanghai Vice-mayor(副市长) Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a HUAWEI Mate X Smartphone. Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks.
About 100 times faster than 4G networks, 5G will let people download and upload data faster than ever before. But 5G won’t just bring faster mobile Internet. People can use it for many other things as well.
For example, 5G will help to make self-driving cars safer. Today’s self-driving test cars have one problem-lag(延迟). When the car “sees” an obstacle(障碍物), it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions. However, it will be some time before it sends and receives this information. With this kind of lag, the cars might crash because they don’t receive instructions in time. With 5G, this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer.
5G could also be used to power the Internet of things(IoT), that is a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast Internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. The IoT could be used in a lot of ways. For example, with IoT, your refrigerator could automatically(自动地) place an order online for eggs when it finds that there are no eggs left inside.
26. Which city was 5G tested in for the first time in China?A.Beijing. | B.Shanghai. | C.Shenzhen. | D.Qingdao. |
A.5G is widely used in China now. |
B.5G networks will make our life more convenient. |
C.There are no symbols at the top of our phones. |

A.explain how 5G’s fast speed can be helpful |
B.warn about the possible dangers of self-driving cars |
C.explain how self-driving cars work |
D.let people make sure that self-driving cars will be used at once |
A.A robot that can do housework. |
B.An online store where you can buy anything. |
C.A large online network that connects things and people. |

A.5G will help us buy eggs quickly. |

Last summer I went to one of the world’s most famous historical places, the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. It was the home of the emperors of the last two dynasties (朝代) in China, the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The Forbidden City was built in 1420.The palace has over 10,000 rooms. It was where the emperors dealt with the official business with their ministers.
In Mandarin, the Forbidden City is called the Purple Forbidden City. However, the color of the palace itself is not purple. The color purple stands for power of the great emperors of China. It was so sacred (神圣的) that the commoners could not even dream of ever going in.
The emperors also had some of the largest festival celebrations at the Forbidden City. During Chinese New Year, the emperor would invite all the members of his family and his officials to a banquet. The banquet had a hundred and eight Chinese dishes. It was such an expensive banquet that it could feed many commoner’s families.
Right now the Forbidden City is known as a historical site for tourists from all over the world. Everyone can go there. It is a museum with priceless Chinese antiques (古董) and treasures in it.

“I’ve always had a pretty clear idea of what I want to do.” says Mary, a middle school student who wants to become a director some day.You may not be as sure of your career as Mary. But you can start thinking about and planning for your future career.
The following article helps middle school students plan for careers.
Explore your interests
Many middle school students don’t yet know what they want to do. But in fact students may change their minds several times, perhaps even after they enter society. And some of tomorrow’s careers might not exist today. In the middle school, it isn’t necessary to focus on just one job. But looking into the kinds of you might like can help you succeed.
①________
Understanding what you enjoy and what you’re good at is the most important step in exploring careers. If you don’t know what you want to do, you should ask yourself what you like to learn about. If you really like science, what do you enjoy about it — the lab work or the research? It’s important to think about what you like to do, because work will finally be a big part of your life.
Discover possible careers
Once you’ve thought about the subjects and activities you like best, the next step is to look for careers that put those interests to use. If you love sports, for example, you might consider a career as a P.E. teacher or a soccer coach. If you like English, a career as an English teacher, a translator or a travelling guide might be a good choice.
②________
After discovering possible jobs, you’ll want to learn more about them. Talking directly to workers on the phone, by email, or through online discussion can help you get information about what they do.亲自与他们见面也是有帮助的。First-.hand information is necessary for you to find out if you’ll really like a career.

Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758 in the West Division of Hartford where his father farmed and worked as a weaver. His mother was a housewife.
Few people went to college at that time but Noah loved so much to learn that his parents let him go to Yale, Connecticut’s(康涅狄格州) only college. Noah graduated in1778. He desired(渴望) to study law but his parents didn’t have more money to send him to school. So in order to make a living Noah taught in Glastonbury Hartford and West Hartford. Later he studied law.
Noah did not like American schools. Sometimes 70 children of all ages were crammed (挤满) into one-room schoolhouses with poor books and untrained teachers. Their books came from England. Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books, so in 1783 Noah wrote his own textbook A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. Most people called it the “Blue-Backed Speller” because of its blue cover.
For 100 years Noah’s book taught children how to read, spell and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book of its time. Ben Franklin used Noah’s book to teach his granddaughter to read.
When Noah was 43 he started writing the first American dictionary. He did that because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak in the same way. He also thought that Americans should not speak or spell just like the English. Noah used American spellings like color instead of the English colour and music instead of musick. He also added American words that weren’t in English dictionaries like skunk and squash. He spent over 27 years writing his dictionary. When Noah accomplished his dictionary in 1828 at the age of 70, the first American dictionary came out. It had 70,000 words in it.
Noah did many things in his life. He worked for copyright laws, wrote textbooks, Americanized the English language and edited magazines. When Noah Webster died in 1843, he was regarded as an American hero.
