The book I’m Fine in China has been come out by Shanghai Educational Publishing House recently. It talks about the story of 22 Foreigners and China. The writer Melody, who was born in 1988, has been in China for twelve years. Over these years, she has traveled more than half of China.
Melody played a key role as the book’s main writer. She connected 21 other people from different counties with different experiences to write down their stories about China. Among them were her close friends and classmates, as well as foreign friends she did not know but found through the Internet.
Anasi from Latvia has been in China for 16 years. After graduating from high school, Anasi decided to learn Chinese. The reason why she chose Chinese was that she knew that China is a multi-ethnic (多民族) and multicultural country, and she wanted to learn the history and culture of China. She had planned to return to her home country after studying in China for a year, but she became interested in the country while studying at Fudan University. After graduating from Fudan University, Anasi stayed in Shanghai to work.
Like Anasi, each main role in the book has a lively life story in China. And most of them use the word “predestination (缘分)” in their stories. Tray was a junior school student. One day, he read the poster by his classroom door at school. It said that the school was putting on a musical (音乐剧), The Shoemaker and the Elves. All students were invited to try out for a part.
Trey liked this story and had a great voice, but he was quite shy. He decided to give it a try for that interesting story though he did not know if he could sing in front of other people.
At the audition (试镜), Trey had the number 1. He searched the room for someone who might trade numbers with him.
But it was too late. The music teacher called out, “Number 1, please!” Trey took a deep breath and started singing. It seemed that Trey exactly became the simple shoemaker. Trey caught the role’s sadness that he was at the risk of losing his business.
When Trey finished the song, the room was filled with cheers. Trey was praised by students and teachers.
At last, Trey made his way to a seat. He had done it, though he didn’t believe he could do it at the very beginning. But it’s not that difficult as he thought. Trey smiled happily as he thought to himself, “There’s nothing special and amazing about that shoemaker’s life. And I don’t want a life like his. Even so, it felt pretty good to be him.”

Do you know how ancient Chinese people used to tell time? They used to tell time by looking at the moon at night. Chinese lunar calendar, also called “Nong Li”, is based on the movements of the moon. The new moon appears on the first day of each month and the full moon comes out in the middle of the month. The cycle lasts for about 30 days—a month.
For Chinese people, the moon not only serves as a useful helper, but is also connected with brightness, expressing the beautiful wishes of the Chinese.
Every year as the Autumn Moon is full, Chinese people get together under the night sky in admiration. It has grown into a tradition ever since the Tang Dynasty. Celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, the Mid-autumn Day is the second most important in China, after the Spring Festival. It’s also an occasion for eating mooncakes and lighting lanterns. After nightfall, the whole family would look up at the full moon, thinking of their nearby relatives or friends, as well as those who are far away from home.
Many people are drawn to the moon’s mystery(神秘)and beauty. So, it’s not surprising that the moon has been one of the most important inspirations(灵感)to Chinese poets. In some of the poems, the moon carries the wishes towards purity(纯洁)and beauty. Others show the longings(渴望)for family and love. A poetic line “The moon viewed at home brighter.” is a best example.
The moon, new or full, never fails to attract people’s wonder.

“My granddaughter usually sleeps at nearby 11:00 every night. She is only in Grade Six. It’s really worrying to see her go to bed so late,” said Liu Fang, a 70-year-old Beijinger on her way to pick up the young girl after school.
This is quite common in China. According to the 2020 Mentel Health Blue Book, 95.5% of primary school students sleep less than 10 hours, and 90.8% of middle school students sleep less than 9 hours in 2020.
The reasons why students are short of sleep are quite different. “I sleep less as I want to get higher grades, and higher grades often means heavier schoolwork.” said Yang Yue, a ninth-grader.
Students’ poor self-control is another reason for being short of sleep. Yang’s schoolmate Shu Haoyu says he often plays mobile games after doing a bit of homework. “Because of poor study habits, I usually go to bed late, sometimes at 12:00 p.m.” said Shu.
Scientists find that lack(缺乏)of sleep might increase the students’ risks of developing mental and physical health problems. It’s easy for teens to feel down or be short of patience if they don’t get enough sleep. Besides, it also gets in the way of their study. Students may find it difficult to memorize(记住)the text without enough sleep.
This worrying situation has driven the Ministry of Education(教育部)to make an action plan called “The Sleep Order”. It clarifies(明确)the sleep time of primary and middle school students of different ages, and requires homework, off-school training, and games to make way for students’ sleep.
“Primary school students are suggested to get at least 10 hours’ sleep at night, nine hours for junior high school students and eight hours for senior high school students.” said Lyu Yugang, an official with the ministry.

The winners of Touching China were announced on the evening of February 17, 2021. Mao Xianglin, the party secretary(党支书)of Xiazhuang, Chongqing was among them.
In 1997, 38-year-old Mao started to work in this village. 1000-meter-tall cliffs(悬崖峭壁)were around the village, and there was only one way to get out of the village for many years. It took villagers three days to walk to the nearest town. Mao decided to build a road. “We can’t stay poor forever. I’ll lead us to live a better life, even though it will be hard.” Mao said.
He led more than 100 villagers to build the road with their hands. They hung from ropes and used different kinds of tools to build the road. It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. But their work has improved people’s lives. It takes just one hour to drive to the nearest town now.
Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield(产量)was nearly 40 tons. Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges online. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had got out of poverty(贫困).
Mao, who will retire(退休)in five years, said, “Although the conditions are better, the spirit of the Xiazhuang people can’t be lost. It has to be passed down.”
