The cold wind blew through the trees. Winter was on its way. Linda was warm in her house, thinking about an article about the kids who helped out their communities. She thought it would be really ________ to help her own town.

The manager took out a box of candy and said, “Last week, I bought a thousand boxes of this candy. If you can sell them all before the end of the week, you can have the job.”

“That’s easy,” Harry took the boxes of candies and left the office. Every day, he went from door to door, trying to sell the candies. But he couldn’t sell one because the candies were so bad that he couldn’t even give them away.

At the end of the week he went back to the manager. “I’m sorry, sir,” he said. “I’m not the best salesman in the world, but I know who is.”

“Oh,” said the manager. “Who?”

“The person who sold you a thousand boxes of this candy,” Harry said.

One evening after dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Smith called a family meeting. “We’ve made a difficult decision.” Mr. Smith said. “You see, your mother is offered a job as manager of a television station in Chicago. Unluckily, the station isn’t here. After thinking long and hard about it, we’ve decided to move to Chicago.”

Marc looked surprised, while his sister May started asking when they would be moving. “It’s surprising, but exciting!” she said. Marc simply said, “We can’t go―I can’t leave all my friends. I’d rather stay here and live with Tommy Lyones!”

Mr. and Mrs. Smith hoped that by the time they moved in August, Marc would be more used to the idea of leaving. However, he showed no signs of accepting the news, refusing to pack(打包) his things.

When the morning of the move arrived, Marc was missing. His parents called Tommy Lyones’s house, but Mrs. Lyones said she hadn’t seen Marc. Mrs. Smith became increasingly worried.

What they didn’t know was that Marc had started walking over to Tommy’s house, with an idea of hiding in the Lyones’ attic(阁楼) for a few days. But as Marc walked past all the familiar sights of the neighborhood: the green wall he and his mother painted, the tree he and his sister used to climb and the park where he and his father often walked together, he changed the idea. How much would these mean without his family? Who makes them special? Marc didn’t take the time to answer those questions but instead hurried back to his house, wondering if there were any boxes the right size to hold his CD collection.

Napping (午睡) is a great way to rest and feel alert (机警的), and it does good to our brain. However, you may wonder how long you have to sleep before heading to bed for your midday nap.

If you need to be alert right after waking up, “power naps” of 10~30 minutes are suggested. Longer naps may cause some sleepiness after you wake up and you need some time to feel better.

A recent study from China has even suggested that daily afternoon napping is connected with better cognitive function (认知功能) in older adults. The researchers asked 2200 over-70s about their napping habits before testing their memory and language skills. They found that those who usually napped did better than those who didn’t.

But how long people nap may make a difference here—a similar study showed that those who usually napped for 30~90 minutes had better overall cognition (整体认知) compared to those who napped for longer or shorter, or who didn’t nap at all. The reasons why short naps are so good for alertness are not well understood. It’s possible that napping helps the brain cleanup sleep-inducing (助眠的) products that would inhibit brain activity.

Although napping has many advantages, it may not be good for people who suffer from insomnia (失眠). That’s because naps may make those people harder to fall asleep when going to bed in the evening. Naps should also be avoided in situations where great performance is needed right after the nap, as it may take some time to fully wake up.

People throw millions of facemasks（口罩）everywhere around the world. It’s not only bad for the environment but also     72     to wildlife.
