Chopsticks are a pair of small equal-length sticks, usually made of wood, used for eating Asian food. It is believed that the first chopsticks were developed in China. Chopsticks play an important role in Chinese food culture. Chinese chopsticks are usually 9 to 10 inches long. They are round on the eating end which means heaven (天), and the other end is square which means earth. The appearance of chopsticks said goodbye to those days when our Chinese ancestors had to use their hands to eat.

Besides, the use of chopsticks has also been a part of Chinese food culture. There are some taboos that you must pay great attention to when you use chopsticks. Firstly, don’t use them to hit your bowl or plate. Secondly, never use them to point at others. Thirdly, don’t put them in different food without taking something. Fourthly, don’t cross the chopsticks on the table. And lastly don’t leave your chopsticks standing in the rice. Chinese people do this only when they honor the dead.

Nowadays, chopsticks have many new usages. For example, you can buy a pair as a gift to your friends and relatives. In Chinese, it reads “kuaizi”, which means having sons soon, so a newly-married couple will be very happy to accept it as their wedding gift.

44. In which country are chopsticks mainly used?
A.France.B.China.C.Australia.
45. What did our Chinese ancestors use to eat according to the passage?
A.Hands.B.Chopsticks.C.Spoons.
46. What does the underlined word “taboos” mean in Chinese?
A.用途B.禁忌C.说明
47. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.The importance of chopsticks.B.The history of chopsticks.C.The introduction of chopsticks.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the great works by Mark Twain. The book is so interesting. Even today, it is quite popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have learned an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.

In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring tasks. What’s in your mind when your mom tells you to clean the floor? Have you ever wanted to complain(抱怨)? I think most people have.

Tom Sawyer, however, thought “differently” when he was given a boring task. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence(篱笆). Tom’s friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt “excited” about the task. “Only one in a thousand — maybe even two thousand boys can do this!” Tom said.

Tom’s words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence. If Tom had thought about nothing but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.

This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don’t complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come and do the work for you. However, without complaining, you’ll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!

48. According to the writer, what is most people’s reaction(反应) to a boring task?
A.Complaining about it.B.Accepting it.C.Refusing it.
49. What did Aunt Polly ask Tom to do in this text?
A.Visit Ben.B.Clean the floor.C.Paint the fence.
50. Why did Tom say the underlined sentence to Ben in Paragraph 3?
A.To express his sadness.B.To catch Ben’s interest.C.To show his anger.
51. What does the writer learn from Tom Sawyer?
A.It is no use complaining.B.Refusing is the best choice.C.Waiting is the only way out.

Even if you shop with plastic bags, always remember to recycle them. Most families don’t realize the importance of eco-friendly living—especially children. So how can you help children start seeing green? Well, here are a few suggestions.

♦ Don’t buy toys—borrow instead. If kids are concerned, most toys start to lose their shine(光彩). Don’t let the unloved toys gather dust around the house—instead, join a local toy library and give them to the library. And if you do buy new toys, try to buy toys made from wood and other eco-friendly materials.

♦ Spend time outside. Make sure your child spends time learning to be outside. Let him/her get involved in nature by planting a tree, building a birdhouse, or taking a bike ride in a nearby park.

♦ Teach green. Even if your child doesn’t receive an environmental education in the classroom, there’s no reason that you can’t spread the word at home. Let your kid help out with separating your recyclables.

♦ Stick with eco-friendly entertainment. Most kids may not seem to be interested in the subject on the environment, but put it in a TV show and they’ll change their minds. Give them a taste of the online cartoon show, and you’ll finally find the children learn it happily.

52. The phrase “help children start seeing green” can be replaced by “________”.
A.help children see the green color.
B.tell children they should like green.
C.help children understand the importance of eco-friendly living
53. The Chinese meaning of the underlined word “recyclables” is ________.
54. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.We can buy toys made from wood.
B.Parents shouldn’t teach children environmental subject at home.
C.Most kids don’t like to learn subjects on the environment.
55. The writer thinks that ________.
A.parents shouldn’t buy lots of toys for their children
B.parents shouldn’t give unloved toys to the toy library
C.parents cannot teach children environmental subjects on TV.

Cooking should be considered as art just like any other activity which requires skills and knowledge. It is often said that students are supposed to learn scientific facts as well as how to prepare meals. The following will explain why cooking should be taught in schools.

Cooking is an important skill in life.

Schools are supposed to teach knowledge to the students so that they can lead successful independent lives when they are out of school. Also, they can step into the world knowing how to make a living.

Cooking helps discover future career.

When schools offer cooking lessons, students will show an interest in it and might take cooking as a career. This will give them the chance to perfect their basic skills and be creative in the kitchen.

Cooking avoids wasting money.

One of the main reasons why cooking should be taught in schools is that the students always use a lot of money to buy ready-made food, while in the real sense they could prepare a nice meal with less cost by buying the required ingredients.

Cooking betters math learning.

Schools do not just teach how to prepare delicious meals. Students are also taught to follow the instructions in a standard when mixing ingredients. If it is, ‘add 1/4 spoon of salt,’ students should only add that amount. So there is no more or less.

Cooking Should Be Taught in Schools.
