My friend Bobby and his family lived a simple life. They didn’t have much money to spend on anything but essential (必须的) things like food. But as the summer holidays came around, Bobby wanted to treat his kids and take them to play miniature golf.
When they arrived at the golf course, Bobby walked up to the woman at the ticket office and said, “How much is it to get in?”
The young woman replied, “$3.00 for you and $3.00 for any kid who is older than 6. We let them in free if they are 6 or younger. How old are they?”
Bobby replied, “One is 3 and the other is 7, so I guess I should pay you $6.00.”
The woman at the ticket counter said, “Hey, did you just win the lottery (彩票) or something? You could have saved yourself 3 dollars. If you told me that the older one was 6, I wouldn’t have known the difference.”
Bobby replied, “Yes, that may be true, but the kids would know the difference. It is my responsibility (责任) to set a good example for them. That way, they can grow up and set good examples for others, too.”
Then, taking his two boys by the hand, Bobby spent a wonderful afternoon with them playing golf.

①One night, during the first of my eldest son’s three basketball games, we happened to be sitting next to a lady with a young son. The little boy looked slightly younger than my youngest son. At one point in the game, the little guy looked over to my son, and said, “Wanna be my friend?” My husband leaned over to tell me what he heard. I spent the next 20 minutes taking pictures of my oldest son on the court(球场), and my youngest son, with his new buddy(伙伴), playing games two seats down from where I sat. It was a heartwarming scene(场景) and reminded me how easy it can be to make new friends.
②A few hours earlier, we went to a downtown cafe for an afternoon treat. There were no free tables for four, so we took a table for two, and crowded into the small space, each taking a bite of everyone else’s order. We were loud. We were likely annoying(使生气) the college students with open laptops, drinking coffee and working hard to finish midterm papers. One such young lady came over to our table and said, “I have more room at my table. I am happy to trade with you guys so you can spread out.” It was a simple act but it showed a selfless heart. We politely refused her offer, but her kindness stuck with me for hours after it happened.
③These are just two examples of everyday kindnesses, but I often care little about them. I could name so many more. Often overlooked or unknowing, these small acts of service, friendliness and human care are what it takes to make the world go round.

①Have you ever met the following kind of person in school? They do poorly in class. But after an exam, they always feel that they did well. Why are they so confident(自信的)?
②Their confidence comes from the Dunning-Kruger effect (邓宁-克鲁格效应), Forbes reported. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a concept in psychology (心理学). It says that people who do tasks poorly don’t know their poor ability. They also mistakenly feel that they are actually doing well.
③Psychologist David Dunning from Cornell University did an experiment to test this effect. He and his team asked some students to take a grammar test. After finishing the test, the students were asked to estimate(估计) how many questions they answered correctly.
④Dunning and his team found that the lowest scoring students overestimated their abilities. In fact, their actual grammar ability was quite poor, but they thought they were in the top third of test-takers.
⑤This doesn’t apply just to students, either. Many people in the working world also experience this. One study of software companies found that 32 to 42 percent of workers thought they were in the top 5 percent of their companies. In a study at the University of Nebraska, more than 90 percent of the school’s staff thought themselves to be above average(平均值), according to Forbes.
⑥But on the other hand, people with average or high skill levels realize they don’t know everything. They know that there might be others who are better than them. So they may be more modest (谦虚的) and may not feel very confident about themselves.
⑦However, people who are trapped by the Dunning-Kruger effect aren’t hopeless. According to Dunning, these people simply don’t know that they could be doing better, or they don’t know what good performance actually looks like. In fact, if they are trained properly, they can see the difference between their previous (之前的) poor performance and their new and improved performance.

B.People with the lowest scores think they’re better than they really are. |
