When the first supermarket opened its doors 75 years ago, shoppers were in shock. That day in January 1948 changed the way people in the UK shopped. On 12 January 1948, a great number of people crowded into a new shop in Manor Park, London. This was because it allowed shoppers to choose, touch and take things off the shelves themselves. The idea came from the US, where a supermarket-style shop called Piggly Wiggly had opened in 1916. Its owner, Clarence Saunders, decided to let people help themselves instead of serving each of them. In this way, he could cut costs and reduce prices. Shopping trolleys(购物车)first appeared in the UK supermarkets in 1950. With a trolley, people could carry more in a single shopping trip.
Within 10 years, supermarkets were springing up all over Britain. People could find one almost anywhere. The first one-stop supermarket opened in Nottingham shire, England, in 1964. It had 50 departments and sold everything under one roof. Around 30, 000 people and 1, 000 cars turned up on its opening weekend, causing traffic jams. Today, 9 out of 10 people buy things from supermarkets.
Supermarkets are using technology to make shopping easier. Amazon Fresh shops use cameras and shelves to see and weigh what people buy. In the US, “smart trolleys” scan(扫描)objects when they are dropped in and make it easy for customers to find things. Engineers in Hong Kong have designed self-driving trolleys. Supermarkets are looking for smarter ways to send things, too. Coles supermarket in Australia uses drones(无人机)to fly things to customers’ doors.

Simon: But Jack…
Lucy: Oh, Jack, you are naughty(淘气的). Keeping me waiting here for twenty years, and then trying to surprise me by coming in from the window. And your friend, I see, is as strong as you. Good evening. Jack’s such a silly boy, still up to his tricks. Do take a chair. And we can all have a nice cup of tea. You’d like that, wouldn’t you?
Simon: Oh …er…yeah. Er…thank you.
Lucy: Lovely. Now, wait a minute. Jack, entertain your friend, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
Simon: A right mess this is. Quick, back out of the window.
Jack: No. Calm down. Can’t you see? It’s even easier. She thinks I’m her old boyfriend. She’s been waiting for him for twenty years. All I have to do is to ask her for the money and she’ll give it to me. She’s off her head.
Simon: Do you think so? It’ll be as easy as that?
Jack: Of course it will. Now shut up. She’s coming back.
Simon: She didn’t even notice our masks.
Jack: Oh, shut up.

Simon: Oh, very pleased, I’m sure.

Lucy: Ah yes, Jack. I wasn’t going to mention it quite so soon, but that ten thousand pounds I lent you must have got quite a lot of interest by now, and times are rather hard. Now, drink your tea like a good boy and we’ll discuss how you can pay it back. Twenty years is a long time to wait, after all. Jack? Jack, what are you doing? Come back at once. Oh dear. A Pathway (路径) to Meaning in Life
When it comes to a meaningful life, we might think of love, happiness and health. A life filled with meaning is what most of us want for ourselves. Then, what makes a meaningful life?
Many researchers agree that a meaningful life comes down to three factors (因素): having long-term goals, believing that one’s life matters, and feeling that one’s life fits together and “makes sense”.
But we believe there is more to consider. Sometimes life enables us to experience small moments of beauty. When people are open to appreciating (欣赏) such experiences, these moments may improve how they see their own life. We call this experiential appreciation (EA). EA is about the person feeling connected to events and being able to appreciate the value within the connection. It shows the discovery of and admiration for life’s beauty.
We recently set out to better understand EA in studies. We were interested in whether EA was also tied to general judgment of meaning in life. If so, it could be a factor for meaningfulness.
In the first study, we had people rate (评估) their support for different methods of reducing stress. We found that people who managed stress by focusing on their appreciation for life’s beauty also reported experiencing life as highly meaningful.
In the next study, we asked people to rate the degree to which they agreed with various statements, such as “I appreciate the beauty of life” and “I appreciate little things in life,” as well as other statements that related to the three factors and a general sense of meaning in life. Our results showed that the more people reported that they were “appreciating life” and its many experiences, the more they felt their life was valuable.
In the following studies, we further looked at the connection between EA and meaningfulness. For example, we found that people who were asked to look back on the most meaningful event of the past week generally reported high EA in those moments.
All the results proved our theory (假设) true. But putting it into practice can be difficult. Our fast-paced lifestyles fill the day with goals. We try to get the highest output both at work and in spare time. This focus on future outcomes makes it all too easy to miss what is happening right now. We should slow down and let life surprise us.
34. You were most probably in the EA condition when _________.A.you made a travel plan for the coming holiday |
B.you hurried to serve the customers in the store |
C.you practiced hard to become the best violinist |
D.you stopped to admire the roses by the roadside |
A.Thinking back to the past weakens our sense of meaning. |
B.Enjoying small things can influence our attitude toward life. |
C.Proper stress management is the key to living a satisfying life. |
D.Good judgment on beauty improves connections among people. |
A.It is easier for results-driven people to achieve success. |
B.We often turn a blind eye to the present moment. |
C.A fast-paced lifestyle helps us reach our goals. |
D.Future life will bring us many more surprises. |
A.To explain how to discover beauty in life. |
B.To discuss what the true meaning of life is. |
C.To introduce a new factor for a meaningful life. |
D.To compare different factors for meaningfulness. |

Have you ever visited Longmen Grottoes(石窟)or Yungang Grottoes? Around 1, 800 years ago, Chinese artists made statues in mountains. Over the years, these statues have gone through earthquakes, floods and wars. Now in the 21st century, however, they are facing an even bigger problem: tourism. Too many tourists go to visit those grottoes every year and this certainly does harm to the grotto statues. How?
Over many centuries, these grotto statues slowly corrode(侵蚀)because of the acidic content (酸性物含量)of air, water and so on. But when they are open to the public, the corrosion process speeds up.
According to a study, the carbon dioxide that visitors breathe out has made the air more acidic. Also, visitors bring in microorganisms(微生物). Even their body heat can increase the grottoes’ temperature.
Bad behaviour can cause harm to the grotto statues as well. Too many visitors touch the grotto statues and cause their surfaces to change colour.
When we visit the grottoes, we can often see a sign saying, “No Flash!”or “No Photos!” This is because the strong light can be bad for the statues, especially those with colour. The light can easily make them lose colour.
To protect those ancient cultural treasures, recently China has asked the workers who take care of those grottoes not to allow too many visitors to come every day. And to keep a balance between protecting relies and educating the public, some grotto sites have also created their own digital(数字的)museums.
