◆ Clear your purpose for reading

Before you start reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book. Most people read for two main reasons, pleasure or knowledge. Clearing about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read, but also remind you why reading the book is important to you, so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.

◆ Read only what you are interested in

No matter what you are reading, it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may tell you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.

◆ Give up books that you don’t enjoy

You may have chosen books that you are interested in, and they are right to your purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don’t enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading, give it up. Remember reading shouldn’t be a chore.

◆ Set a reading goal

It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don’t have a due date! I don’t need to return those books. Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.

The Internet has become part of teenagers’(十几岁的) life. A new report on 3,375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities found that 38 percent of them believe they use the Internet often.

While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit websites(网址) they should not look at. Hong Ying, a teacher from Beijing Yinghua Middle School warns(警告) that bad things can happen if young people spend too much time on the Internet. She had a student who used to be good at school. But then he started visiting unhealthy websites. He went mad, cheated(欺骗) a girl and was taken away by the police.

In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior(行为) has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. The book uses real examples to teach students about good ways of using the Internet. The book gives useful advice such as to read news or to find helpful information to study. Teachers and parents all think the book is a very good idea.

Hong said the book will be a guide for teens to use the Internet. She believes it will keep students away from bad sites.

“Many students are using the Internet without guidance(指导) from their parents,”she said, “The book will teach students how to be a good person in the online world.”

Reading makes a full man-Francis Bacon. World Book Day falls on April 23 every year. It was set up by the UNESCO in 1995 to encourage people, especially teenagers, to discover the pleasure of reading. It is also the day to honor great writers, for example, William Shakespeare, born or dead on that day.

Many countries celebrate World Book Day. Take UK as an example. On that day, millions of schoolchildren can buy books of special price, a much lower price than usual, in any bookstore. It has been done every year since 1998. World Book Day is also celebrated in China. Wen Jiabao, Premier of China, is an avid reader. He does lots of reading every day though he is very busy. On World Book Day 2009, he called on people to do more reading. Wen suggested that young people should spend more time reading. “Books can not change the world, but people can change the world by changing themselves through reading,” he said.

Reading can benefit people in many ways. Reading helps us become more knowledgeable and more intelligent. Reading helps us to follow the latest developments of science and technology. Reading gives us information about other cultures and places of the world. When we read, we may find many things that are unfamiliar to us. We would have to use our brain to think about them or do more reading to find out the answers. The more we read, the more we know. The more we know, the smarter we become. Reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English. We all know that it is difficult to learn everything in the classroom, for example, the ways English people are speaking and writing today. Reading helps us.

“Reading makes a full man” (Bacon, 1597). Books, magazines, newspapers and other kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world and perfect us. Therefore, it is necessary for us to spend time reading every day.

We can easily and cheaply get all the wisdom of the ages， all the stories that have delighted（使快乐） mankind for centuries， but we must know how to use this treasure and how to get the most from it． The most unfortunate people all over the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books．

I am very interested in people， in meeting them and finding about them． I've found in books new friends， new societies， and new words． Reading is a pleasure of mind． It is a little like a sport： Your eagerness for knowledge and quickness make you a good reader． Your experience， compared with his， brings you to the same or different conclusions， and your ideas develop as you understand his．

Every book stands by itself， like a one﹣family house， but books in a library are like houses in a city． Wherever you start reading you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas， and finally you not only find out about the world and the people in it， you find out about yourself， too．

Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be． If you concentrate on books somebody tells you "you ought" to read， you probably won't have fun． But if you put down a book you don't like and try another till you find one that means something to you， and then relax with it， you will almost certainly have a good time， and if you become， as a result of reading， better， wiser， kinder， or more gentle， you won't have suffered during the process．
