What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Have you ever thought about what you want to be when you grow up? Do you want to be a singer, a dancer or a writer? Almost everyone has his or her favorite job when they are young. Our Chinese teacher Mr. Brown, asked us about our dreams in class today. Here are the results (结果).

After discussion, Mr. Brown asked three students to share their dream jobs and reasons (原因).

Linda	I want to be a teacher like my father. Teachers play an important part in passing on the knowledge (知识).
Andrew	I began to play the violin when I was 4, and I am quite good at it. My dream is to give excellent performances (表演) to people around the world.
Mike	I’d like to be a computer programmer. It is a hot job these days. Some people think computer science is more boring than computer games, but I don’t think so.

Chess（国际象棋）is popular around the world and has a long history. It’s based（以……为基础）on an old game from India. The chess we play today is from Europe.

Chess is a two players’ game. One player uses the white pieces（棋子）, and the other uses the black pieces. Each piece moves in a special way. Each player has a piece called the king. A player can only move one piece at a time. And he can’t move again until the other player moves. The game ends when a player loses the king. There are a few more rules, but those are the basics.

Some people think chess is more than a game. They think it makes people’s mind stronger, because good chess players are good at using their heads. They usually think about what the other player will do next. These skills are useful（有用的） both in chess and in life. Chess is a kind of workout for the mind.

Chess is not just for people. Computers began to play chess in the1970s. At first, they didn’t play well. Later, they grew much stronger. In 1997, a computer beat（打败） the best player in the world for the first time. It was a computer called Deep Blue. Deep Blue was big. Chess surely has along way to go. Don’t you think so?

Obesity（肥胖） is a big health problem now. It affects（影响） more than how you look. Too much fat may kill you. If you’re obese（肥胖的）, you probably will grow into an obese adult（成年人）. But here’s good news. You can fight obesity.

Change your eating habits

You are what you eat. Kids like snacks. Did you list（列清单） any healthy snacks? One study of eating habits showed that soft drinks are the first in the snack list. Next, kids choose salty snacks, like chips. What’s more, the list is full of junk food from No. 3 to No. 11. Finally, No. 12, kids picked a healthy snack— fruit. So, think about your snack choice again.

Get outside to exercise

Jim, a player on his school football team, had a weight problem not a long time ago. He could never get anyone to play with him. So his father and he started playing football for a few minutes every night. Ten minutes turned into an hour or more. In just a few years, the heavy kid became athletic, fit and healthy.

Nearly every American kid watches TV for 2 hours and 56 minutes every day. This adds to（增加）44 days a year of sitting. So we’d better watch TV less.

Eat an apple a day, walk around the house, and play with your family. Do it today.

Nowadays, we are able to try some special sports. Skin diving (潜泳) is one of them. But it’s an old sports. People began to do it about two thousand years ago.

This sport is usually full of fun. It’s very cool to go under the water in hot weather. It can take you into a wonderful new world. It is like a visit to the moon! When you are under water, it is easy for you to climb big rocks, because you are not heavy any more. During the day, when there is much light, everything is blue and green under the sea. If fish swim around you, you can catch them with your hands.

To catch the fish is one of the most interesting parts of this sport. And you can clean the ships, but you don’t have to take them out of the water. You can get many things from the deep sea. Now you can see that skin-diving is both useful and interesting.

If you think you have tanks of air on your back, you can swim freely under the sea— you are wrong. You must learn many driving skills. If you don’t feel well or the water is too cold, stop driving. It’s dangerous. It’s really dark under the sea, so you must watch carefully before moving. Also, there are sometimes dangerous sea animals. So be careful.

Can you name any red fruits? Do you know any green vegetables? Let’s add a little color to our dining table. These foods are good for our health.
