“Keep your eyes on your own paper” is one of the rules that Mrs. Archer has taught us. It is a simple rule, but it’s not a rule everybody chooses to follow.

This morning, I had an experience with a “rule breaker” during an English exam. I felt somebody was watching me a little too closely. I turned my head quickly and saw James, who sat right behind me. My eyes caught his and he said in a low voice, “I hope you studied for this test!” I gave him a smile, not sure whether he was joking or not, and returned to my test. This time I leaned a little more closely towards my paper. “I can’t see!” James said.

“What am I going to do?” I thought to myself. Cheating went against my beliefs. I curled my arm around my answers.

He’s your friend and what are friends for?

You know it’s wrong.

I tapped(轻敲) the top of my desk, hoping for an easy way out of this matter. No easy answer came. I just knew I had to do what I felt was right, even if it made James mad. So I guarded my paper so that he couldn’t see my answers.

When the exam ended, I stood there for a moment, searching for the right words to say to James. “Sorry, James, but you know me well enough to understand how I feel about cheating.” I said slowly and softly. “But maybe I could help you study before the next test.” “OK, Brian,” he smiled. “It might not be easy, but I’ll give it a try.”

I felt happy that my friendship with James hadn’t been destroyed. Mrs. Archer would be proud.

D.Because he followed the rule and kept friendship with James.
阅读理解-单选(约350词) | 适中(0.65)
文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。讲述了作者19岁时和新朋友碰到乞讨的陌生人之间发生的故事。

When I was 19 years old, I was at a dance club. As we were walking to my car one cold night, a man walked up to us. Behind him was a woman carrying a small child. The child had a jacket on but it wasn’t buttoned up(扣上). The man began to tell us he wanted to borrow some money for the night to get his wife and kid into a hotel. He had a job but no place to live in and was waiting for the first paycheck. He said he could get our mailing address and mail the money back.

The guy I was with reached into his pocket to give this man a $20 bill. As the man was reaching his hand out to take the money, I put my hand on my new friend’s hand and said, “Can I talk to you for a minute?”

I told him that every day people asked my mother for money on her way to work. She said they made more money than she did, simply begging for money. These people were cheating those with soft hearts. And if they were truly worried about their child, they would have at least buttoned his jacket or covered him with his blanket.

My new friend looked at me with disappointment and said, “Michelle, I know there are people out there that take advantage of(利用)others. I also know there are people out there that are one paycheck away from being homeless. If I give $20 to 10 people and only one of them really needs it and uses it for the right thing, it is worth it.”

I am now 37 years old and I have never forgotten what he said to me. I don’t even remember his name, but I do remember that the experience changes the way I look at different situations.

36. Where did the story happen?
A.Near a hotel.B.Outside a dance club.

38. Why did the writer put her hand on her new friend’s hand?
A.She wanted to tell him to give some more money to the stranger.

Do you like doing homework? It seems that homework has given students much trouble since it appeared, but it has a special purpose in its history.

Why was homework invented?

Public schools appeared about 150 to 200 years ago. 那时孩子们在学校花的时间不多。They were expected to help with housework.

As the Industrial Revolution (工业革命) provided new jobs which required more working skills, students were taught subjects which were more difficult. It was impossible for them to learn everything by just paying attention in class. That was probably why teachers invented homework. The development of society has made homework part of modern education system (体系).

Is homework good or bad?

What can homework bring students?
◇A better memory and thinking ability
◇A chance to review what they have learned
◇Good study habits

There are few reasons which can be named against homework. The only situation where homework is harmful is when there is too much of it. Except for that, homework is useful in every way. Children nowadays deal with lots of information every day. They can get any kind of information within seconds. But this may cause them to get used to satisfying their need without making an effort. They may have difficulty facing the challenges in the future, because anything really great will require them to put in a lot of hard work. Homework is sometimes difficult, but it is one of the best tools educators have to teach students how to think and develop good habits. That is the main reason why it remains part of every school.

Three men traveling on a train began a conversation about the world’s greatest wonders.

“As far as I’m concerned,” the first man said, “the Egyptian pyramids are the world’s greatest ones.     51     they were built thousands of years ago, they are still standing. Remember those people who     52     (build) them had only very simple tools. They did not have so many kinds of machinery that     53     (engineer) and builders have today.”

“I agree that the pyramids are wonderful,”     54     second man said, “but I don’t support the idea that they are the     55     (great) ones. I believe computers are more wonderful than the pyramids. With computers, people manage     56     (know) about the world, just by surfing the Internet.” He turned to the third man and asked about his view.

The third man thought     57     a long time, and then he said, “Well, I agree that the pyramids are wonderful and that computers are wonderful, too. However, in     58     (I) opinion, the most wonderful thing in the world is the Thermos(保温瓶).”

With these words, he pulled a Thermos out of his bag,     59     (lift) it up and said, “In winter, you pour in a hot drink and it     60     (stay) hot. In summer, you pour in a cold drink and it keeps cold. How does the Thermos know whether it’s summer or winter?”
