Mr. White is a tall and strong man. He teaches P.E. in a middle school. He has long hair and he takes care of it. It was Sunday yesterday.

It was Sunday yesterday. There was a big football match of the year on the playground in the centre of the city. Mr. White likes the game very much, and of course he was going to watch it. With his friend’s help, he got a ticket a few days ago. After breakfast he hurried to the bus stop, but a lot of people were waiting there. A bus came and he hardly got on. There were lots of people on it and it was difficult for them to put their feet. He had to catch the back of a chair. At the next stop a boy got on the bus. He looked around and saw Mr. White’s hair and caught it. Mr. White found it at once and called out, “Let go out of my hair, boy!”

“Are you going to get off, sir?” asked the boy.

Joy is a student in No.1 Middle School. Last night, he didn’t feel well. So he rode to the hospital to see a doctor. The doctor took his temperature. It was about 39℃. Then the doctor gave him some medicine.

Have you ever seen the day begin? The dark sky starts to look brighter. Then suddenly the sky is all pink and red and gold even a little green. The earth has turned bright until the sun is shining on the place where you are. This is what makes it day.

The sun is always shining, but it can only shine on one side of the earth at a time. It can’t light the side that is away from it. When the sun is shining on the other side of the world, it is night where you are. At night, you can see the stars.

All day the stars are in the sky, but the light from the sun is so bright that you can’t see them. When the sun is gone, the stars are bright enough to see. Stars look as tiny as pinheads (针头), but some are even bigger than the sun. Big things look little when they are far away. In the sky, planes look like toys, but on the ground you can see that they are big. Stars are millions of times bigger than planes. They look very small because they are so far away. The sun is closer than the other stars. So it looks bigger.

A hobby is something that you do for fun. You do it when you have time, but you don’t get money from doing it. Hobbies are fun, and they are also good for you.

Do you know that people who do puzzles live longer than people who don’t? People who do puzzles can also remember more than people who don’t do puzzles. Even when they are old, people who do puzzles usually have good brains.

Watching funny movies is great for your body. When you laugh for 15 minutes or more, it is just as good for your body as exercising. Laughing exercises keeps the heart healthy.

Going to concerts is also good for the heart. Listening to music can make your heart strong. Going to concerts can even help sick people get better faster.

Children who play with Legos (乐高) are better at thinking than other children. They even talk and read better. Children who play with Legos learn to use their hands to do small things better than children who do not.

Even driving bumper cars (碰碰车) can be healthy. Some children sometimes bump other children when they are angry. It can be a lot of fun to try to stop others from bumping into your car. Bumping others in a fun way can turn anger into laughter.

And speaking of fun, a school in South Africa teaches play. That school found that children who study how to have fun have better grades.

Mother’s hands

Night after night, she came to help me cover the quilt (被子), even long after my childhood years. Following her long standing habit, she’d lean down (俯下身) and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead (前额).

I don’t remember when it first started annoying (惹恼) me—her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn (布满老茧的) and rough (粗糙) against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her,   “Don’t do that any more—your hands are too rough!” She didn’t say anything. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar (熟悉的) expression of her love.

Time after time, with the passing years, my thoughts returned to that night. By then I missed my mother’s hands, missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead. Sometimes the feelings seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it stored (贮藏) in the back of my mind.

Shaoshan is a famous city in China. It is the hometown of Chairman Mao Zedong. He once lived, studied and     54     here. Shaoshan is a comfortable place     55     flowers blooming (开花) and birds singing all year round. Shaoshan is almost in the middle of Hunan, it is about 40 kilometers from Xiangtan City and also 100 kilometers from Changsha     56    .

As the high-speed trains are available (可获取的), more and more people come here     57     train. For example, it only     58     less than half     59     hour from Changsha City to Shaoshan. Others still want to drive here with families or friends. If people come here on December 26th, it will be the best time. On that day there are a lot of celebrations, because it’s Chairman Mao’s birthday.

Every year many people     60     here to show their respect. Most of them are students and the others are officials. They also look forward to watching The Most Memorable Shaoshan (《最忆韶山冲》). It can help them better understand Chairman Mao. They will be deeply moved and encouraged.

Besides, it is not only a good place for students to have school trips but also an education base for them to learn about the     61     of the Communist Party of China.
