William Shakespeare (威廉·莎士比亚) was born more than 440 years ago and spent his childhood in his hometown, Stratford. Little was known about his childhood though many stories are told, some of which may be true. He probably went to Grammar school at Stratford. At thirteen he had to leave school because his father became poorer at one time. So William had to make his own living. At the age of eighteen he married a farmer’s daughter.
Not long after he left Stratford for London. London was growing quickly. All kinds of people could be found in it, and here Shakespeare met travelers, students and scholars, and he was very interested in the stories they told. He also met writers and actors. He soon found some work in a theater. Before long he became an actor and writer of plays too. There were a few theatres in London. One of the most famous of these was called Globe. Shakespeare himself became one of the owners of this theater. He became famous as a writer of plays soon after. He made use of the writing of others and found ideas in the old poems of Chaucer. By his gift he turned all these old stories into great works of his own. Shakespeare wrote no fewer than thirty-seven plays in his life. Now his works are loved and studied all over the world.

Every year, as the summer days grow shorter, an amazing change happens in Canadian forests. As summer changes to autumn, the trees turn colors, changing from summer greens to shades of red, orange, and yellow. It’s a truly wonderful sight! The forest looks as if it’s on fire.
When I was a boy, my grandmother told me that a strange little man came at night with a paint brush to paint the leaves those wonderful colors. And I believed her for it was a wonderful way of explaining this change to a little boy. But as I grew older, my science teacher gave me the answer.
Trees need food, just like all lives. Leaves produce food for the tree. It’s just sugar, which is sometimes called glucose (葡萄糖). Leaves use sunlight to change water and CO2 into oxygen (氧气). The process by which leaves do this is known as photo-synthesis (光合作用). A chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素) helps make this happen. Chlorophyll is the reason why leaves are green summer.
However, Canadian winters are long, cold and dark. There isn’t enough sunshine in winter for the leaves to make food. In autumn, as the days shorten, the trees get a signal to slow down. It’s time to take a rest. Don’t worry, though. They have enough food prepared to last all winter.
When the leaves stop making food, they no longer need to make chlorophyll. Slowly, the chlorophyll disappears. Remember, this is the chemical that makes leaves green. As the chlorophyll goes away, so the green color goes away too. We begin to see the other colors that are always there. We could not see them before because green is a strong color.

Every day, from morning until night, under the hot sun, the slaves (黑奴) picked cotton and put it in their sacks (麻布袋). When they finished, Legree weighed it, and there was whipping (皮鞭) for the slaves that didn’t pick enough cotton.
One day a new woman called Cassy started working not far from Tom. Tom noticed that she was very fast. He also noticed an older slave Martha was in pain and slow. Her sack (麻布袋) was almost empty. Tom went near Martha, and silently put a lot of his cotton into her sack.
“No, don’t!” said the woman, looking surprised. “They will punish (惩罚) you.”
Just then Sambo arrived, kicked Martha and whipped Tom across his face. “Work faster, you animal!” But when he left, Tom quickly gave her some more of his cotton. Suddenly, the beautiful new woman put a large quantity of cotton in Tom’s sack.
“Tom kept putting cotton into Martha’s sack,” Sambo told Legree that night. “Then we’ll have to teach him a lesson,” said Legree. Slowly the tired slaves entered the room for the weighing of the sacks. First Legree weighed Tom’s sack, and it was enough. So was Martha’s. But Legree shouted at her. “You lazy animal! This is not enough!” Then he said to Tom, “I want to give you a better job than picking cotton, take this woman and whip her—you know how.”
“I’m sorry, Master,” said Tom. “I can’t do it.” Legree whipped Tom and hit him with his fists (拳头) many times. “There!” he said. “Now will you tell me you can’t do it?”
“Yes, Master,” said Tom, with blood running down his face. “I will work night and day, but I will never whip another person.”
“I bought you, and you’re mine, body and soul (灵魂),” he said, kicking Tom.
“My soul isn’t yours, Master! You can’t buy it!”
—From Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Police dogs are given special training to help the police with their work. Many different types of dogs can be trained to do this work, but the best known ones are German shepherds and bloodhounds. In Britain, police dogs usually have a 13-week training course and many dogs fail. Not all dogs make good police dogs. They must be completely reliable and obedient. Most police dogs live with their handlers as part of the family, but they are not pets. They are working dogs and they have a job to do.
Police dogs are trained to chase and hold people who are trying to get away from the police. Police dogs are not vicious animals. They are trained to hold on to people until their handler tells them to let go.
Police dogs often go into dangerous places and they are given special vests to protect them from knife and gun attacks.
Dogs are not only trained to chase and catch criminals. They are also used for following suspects or finding missing people. This is because some dogs, such as bloodhounds, have a very good sense of smell and can be trained to recognize certain types of smells. Some dogs are used to find survivors after earthquakes or explosions and some are specially trained to find dead bodies.
In many countries dogs are used in airports to check luggage for drugs and bombs. Labradors, spaniels and beagles are used for this because they are friendly dogs and people are not afraid of them.
