Space trip is not all about rockets—space balloons can do it too! The Spanish company (公司) HALO Space had the first test flight of its balloon in December 2022. It will compete with some other companies in the space-traveling business.
The test lasted 4 hours. The balloon reached 37 kilometers above Earth. People would see Earth from the blackness of space, said the Daily Mail. By 2029, the company plans to carry 3,000 passengers on 400 trips a year. The ticket for each trip will cost between 100, 000 and 200, 000 US dollars (about 696, 000 to 1, 392, 000 yuan).

The test balloon is 773 kilograms, with a diameter between 110 and 130 meters (the length of a soccer field). It is filled with hydrogen, which is much lighter than air. When it flies, it lifts the capsule connected to it. The capsule can carry eight passengers and a pilot. Passengers can enjoy the 360-degree view through the big windows. To keep people safe, the capsule also has parachutes (降落伞) inside.
Another company, the US-based Space Perspective, said that such trips are about relaxation. Their balloon rises hours to fly to 30 kilometers. Space Perspective is planning to fly their balloons from ships on the sea. Then people can enjoy sunrise and sunset there!
The highest place the space balloons can fly to is called the stratosphere. But there are different layers of Earth’s atmosphere (大气层).

What will humans look like in the future? It sounds like a cool question, but the answer may not be that fun.
A team from Toll Free Forwarding, a US company, built a 3D model of what a human might look like in the year 3000. Her name is Mindy. She looks a little bit scary. The company said the model showed how technology (科技) will change human bodies in less than 800 years.
For example, Mindy’s hands look different from ours. It seems that she always has a cellphone in her hand. That’s called “text claw”, according to the team. Mindy also has a much wider neck. It’s called “tech neck”. It’s from looking down at the phone for too long. Muscles (肌肉) in our necks need to be stronger to support (支撑) our heads.
Mindy also has another eyelid (眼皮). It can protect the eyes from the blue light of the screens. Her skull (头骨) is thicker. It protects the brain from the radiation (辐射) of computers and phones. Technology is so helpful that humans think less. That’s why humans may also have smaller brains in the future. Will you spend less time on your computer and cellphone after seeing this scary model?
OTHER POSSIBILITIES
Many people have other thoughts about what future humans will look like. Let’s take a look.
Smaller body:
There will be more and more people living on Earth. There may not be enough food. The future humans might become smaller, making our bodies need less food and energy (能量).
Darker skin:
People in Africa are having much more babies today than people with light skin (皮肤) in other places. So some people say the skin color of future humans will get darker.
46. What do we know about the 3D model in Paragraph 2?A.It looks scared. | B.A girl named Mindy made it. |
C.People might feel afraid after seeing it. | D.People will need it to live longer. |
A.heavier | B.bigger | C.stronger | D.smaller |
A.![]() | B.![]() | C.![]() | D.![]() |
A.Finding answers to some cool questions. | B.What humans may look like in the future. |
C.Making 3D models for different people. | D.How Mindy will live her life in the future. |
A.develop science and technology quickly | B.spend less time on cellphones and computers |
C.have more babies | D.be good-looking |

Zhang Guimei, born in 1957, began teaching in Huaping—one of China’s poorest areas in 1996. She found that many girls in her class stop coming to school. Later, Zhang learned that they were from very poor families. These girls had to work or get married (结婚) at a young age. Zhang wanted to change (改变) this, so she spent years raising money. Finally, in 2008, she set up (建立) Huaping High School for Girls. It’s China’s first free high school for girls, and in the past years, it sent over 1, 800 poor girls to universities and they would have different lives.
Zhang is the headteacher of this school. She cares about her students all the time. In the autumn of 2020, Zhang bought the best milk tea she could find for all the students in her school. It was their “first cup of milk tea in autumn”. When the milk tea arrived, all the students became excited. Zhang Guimei said, “I hope one day these children can drink whatever they want when they walk on streets.” To make the girls feel safer on their way to classes, she even gets up at 5 a.m every day to turn on the lights on each floor of the teaching building. During every year’s Gaokao, Zhang also goes with her students to the exam site (考点) to keep them safe. “Don’t be afraid, girls. I will be waiting outside for you all.” said Zhang.
After years of tiring work, Zhang is now in poor health, but the school and the children matter more than anything else in her mind.
